  • This video highlights 10 forgotten comic book artists and their contributions to the industry. One of the artists mentioned is LB Cole, known for revolutionizing comic book covers with his bold use of primary colors. He worked for various publishers, including DC and Quality Ace Comics. Another artist, Matt Baker, was the first African American artist to find success in the comic book industry. He was known for his exceptional artwork of the female form and his work on romance comics.
Jack Cole, the creator of Plastic Man, achieved success with his offbeat humor and cartoony style. However, he faced personal struggles and ultimately took his own life in 1958. Alex Schomburg, born in Puerto Rico, worked as one of the main artists for Timely Comics (later Marvel Comics) and drew characters like Captain America and the Human Torch. Lou Fine, a highly regarded artist, contributed to numerous comic books and covers, but sadly died of a heart attack at the age of 56. C.C. Beck is best known for his work on Captain Marvel (now known as Shazam) and continued to work in the industry even after the character faced legal battles. Basil Wolverton, famous for his wacky and grotesque character depictions, found success with his humor-oriented art and became known for his work in Mad magazine. Matt Fox, known for his covers on Weird Tales and his contributions to Marvel Comics, ended his career in the mid-1960s.
These ten artists, although often overlooked, made significant contributions to the comic book industry through their unique artistic styles and creations.

The historical videos that you produced are some of your best. I have learned so much about the hobby I love, and I am sure others have too. As a suggestion, how about doing a video about the different comic book publishers that existed before the comics code? I think it would be fascinating to learn more about that part of our industry. We know about Marvel comics, DC comics even Harvey and Dell comics to an extent. What about all the other ones that existed that went under? That would probably be very interesting to learn about.

Beautiful work, Dave! You have rapidly become my favorite comic commentator. I'm a lifelong collector and a loyal fan. I sincerely hope videos such as these will foster an interest in the amazing Gold and Silver Age books that seem to have slipped out of the collective consciousness of the average modern day collector. We wouldn't be where we are today without them and they deserve a modern re-evaluation. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to the field I - and so many others - love.

I might be wrong but I thought CRIME DOES NOT PAY. and CRIMEBUSTER (a pre Spidey kid super hero) outsold the original Daredevil! "Crime..." was the best selling crime title for years, spawning many imitators!
Also,, lots of people get this wrong. but DC/National did not win that lawsuit, Fawcett had the resources to continue the fight if they chose to. With comic sales plummeting, they decided to get out of comic biz and settle with DC out of court! Fawcett then turned their attention to the new, growing PAPERBACK market!

    • @ComicBookInvestments
