Way before this show came out I got really into a TH-camr that documents her life with DID, and the more I learned about it, the more I realized just how interesting the brain and our formation of identity is. DID seems like an almost evolutionarily-superior survival mechanism, that under extreme circumstances we can partition entire neural networks to protect our minds from breaking, especially when we cannot protect our bodies. DID is exclusively caused by severe trauma that has occurred within a brief window of time during childhood, which is extremely sad, but so specific and therefore fascinating. It tells us that window of time is extremely formative, and anything that disrupts the molding of our sense of self during it can prevent the proper merging of our many selves, which I think is a normal thing all kids at a young age just have going on - like what were our imaginary friends as kids if not additional personalities, and we outgrow them just as we reach an age where our different selves are wiggling into the form of a singular established identity. There is also an almost universal experience within DID that at least one of the identities, usually the first one to show up to the party, is known as the “protector” - like Stephen for Mark, they step in to prevent inconceivable damage to a child’s psyche, then stick around and continue to play that role. You can truly have different people sharing the same body - different accents, there was even a criminal case dropped because they proved it wasn’t only one of the personalities and the others were innocent. Severance actually gives me similar vibes, but that is a whole other conversation. 😅😅
Within our 21st century cyberworld of ongoing noise offering unlimited distraction your work is a very welcome counterpoint. Brush strokes of deep thoughtfulness and humane insight -- delivered with your calm, lucid presentation -- transcends most other "reviewers" found on TH-cam. Even your pauses feel as if breathing, or as interludes within a symphonic movement. What a gift! More porridge, please, sir.
MOOORE!?! Jokes aside, thank you for this amazing comment! It really means a lot to know that my efforts are appreciated. I try my best to just speak in my own voice and hope that it resonates with someone out there, so reading your response is truly inspiring and deepens my resolve to stick with it.
