    Love the review.
The way I budget my purchases is very simple. I budget £5.00 per day over 6 years. To achieve this I save £6 per day over 6 years and that is when I make my upgrades, every 5-6 years. This gives me the ability to invest with very long term usage use cases. Sure there is the risk that software updates (OS and apps) might not travel in the correct direction and may provided some challenges, but so far so good for me. Every 6 years I have about £10k to invest in kit. In between I may upgrade Monitors (if absolutely needed). This is not just for computing power, but for all my other accessories like Monitor, expanders like USB/Thunderbolt, storage, etc.

I'm working on editing videos from my churches service. Nothing as of yet needing 4k encoding just 1080P or less. I was kinda set on the Mac Mini until the limitations of what the M1 in it's supported ports wise. Now when I get a chance I might pickup a new Mac Mini with M2 in it since this seems like a much more capable SoC. Currently doing all this in Davinci Resolve on my work/gaming pc (Ryren 3600x/ RX580 gpu). It gets it done, not nearly as fast as the M1.

I've been working with the M1 Mac mini. It definitely needs a fast SSD for your footage and cache. It also could use more USB-C connections. There are two connections, and one will be taken up by a USB-C monitor. Without an expensive hub you may not be able to hook up every USB-C device you want to use.
I would definitely recommend it for editors who are starting out or don't have much work yet. The Studio would definitely be a worthwhile update for those who have a steady flow of editing work.

Great tips, but I would upgrade the RAM regardless. The base Mac Studio MAX with Resolve 17 handles (1) stream of 4K/3:1 BMPCC 4K RAW & (1) stream of 4K Pro Res HQ with several LUTS just fine on a 4K timeline for my standard (2) camera projects. When stacking (4) mixed streams of 4K BRAW, 2.5K CNDG and 1080P CDNG on it starts dropping to 18-22 FPS until render, and than it plays back smooth. Not bad for a small $2K computer minus all the PC parts picking/GPU shortages.

Hi Matt, is it better to spend money on memory or storage. I’m in Australia, so prices are quite different, but still affordable. I’m trying to keep budget under A$4000.
The base Mac Studio A$3099, 1TB upgrade is A$300, upgrade memory to 64GB is A$600. So total A$3999.
Or am I better off with base Studio with 32GB and upgrading storage to 2TB for A$900, grand total A$3999 also.
Wouldn’t memory help improve performance if more of the video can be cached in memory? Appreciate your thoughts.

Hey Matt, I got a Mac Studio recently and its been working great at nearly everything. But when it comes to premiere pro and I'm working on a project with graphics, could be plain text or some motion graphics template the Mac is working incredibly slow. And the weirdest thing is that when the bar is yellow (on timeline) the clips play back pretty smoothly with only a few hiccups but WHEN RENDERED it laggs like nothing I've ever seen before. I've watched every single ''how to speed up premiere'' but can't get it to work... Do you have any idea how it can be worse when rendered than when not rendered? And is there anything YOU do to speed it up?

if you're doing any color grading- i'd suggest upgrading the internal storage to reflect a full project size. otherwise you'll be bottlenecked by your external drives size and speed (example: using a m1 max studio right now, with thunderbolt g drive and it has a max read write of 250mb/s, this slows down rendering INCREDIBLY vs if it was on local SSD or expensive thunderbolt SSD it'd have 6.5gB/s)

I just got my A7IV and want to get a really good lens, but it's going to be my only really good lens for the time being so I want to make sure it's going to be versatile enough for what I need. I get occasional paid gigs doing birthday parties, family photos, etc. but I don't go searching for jobs so it's pretty rare. My main need is to start filming music videos for my own music.
Can I get away with using the 24mm to do all my performance shots and b roll for rap music videos? Or am I right that a 35mm would do way better? And have you heard anything on the 35mm G master? It's just as expensive as the 24mm, so I'm hoping it is just as good.
    Thanks!

I don't have the 24mm, but I bought the G master 35 a few months ago. I absolutely love it for both photo and video. I also splurged on a high quality polarizer filter for outdoor shoots. The polarizer really enhances it in my opinion. My 35 is definitely a big staple in my kit. You won't regret that purchase

From someone who owns the Ultra M1: Get the M1 Max 24C GPU save your money and yes upgrade your storage.. I bought the Ultra with the hopes of optimization with Davinci. Currently there's no different in rendering time and timeline performance because it is still only using the same amount of rendering engines of the Max. No NLE currently*** is optimized to use all the decode and encode engines so at the moment of me writing this comment 5/17/22 Do not waste your money on the Ultra.. NOW if you do both photo and video editing then yes the M1 Ultra is an absolute BEAST but for video only please save your money and get the M1 Max 24C GPU version.

@@whoismatt Yeah Matt I really wanted the Ultra to be the ultimate video editing system but the truth is that is NOT! I had both and returned the Max version hoping for that magical optimization from Davinci but as of today even with Resolve 18 no difference not even their own beloved FCPX is taking advantage of those extra encoders and decoders which is not giving me hope for the future lol... M1 Max 24C 32GB 1 TB is the ultimate bang for buck editing machine in my opinion but you are right with upgrading to 2 TB for me theres no point since I edit out of a NAS and not the internal HD. While I agree about upgrading the storage, since you can't fix the machine yourself, I would not recommend anything over 1terabyte. External storage is a must in this situation. Get your important projects, and completed projects off of this machine. Time will tell how robust the storage is.

Good point. If my PC power supply or ram or motherboard dies, I can EASILY remove the m.2 ssd drive, and still access all my files.
If Mac Studio dies, fails to boot, you lose everything on the storage, because it is *soldered* to the mainboard.

Best bang for the bucks and 4k editing ist M1 Ultra Mac Studio with 48 cores, 64 GB RAM and 4 TB SSD. This machine is perfect for 6k BRAW and 4K Canon RAW-Lite in Davinci Resolve. 3 times faster than a M1 Pro MacBook Pro or 10 core 128 GB RAM iMac Pro. Yo may save some bucks with 2 TB SSD, but a really fast SSD costs 1k$ for 2 TB: GDRIVE Pro SSD

    • @DerekDavis213
      @DerekDavis213 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Another guy pointed out something critical: 4TB SSD is soldered to the mainboard. If your Mac Studio dies, 4 terabytes of files are lost too. You cannot just remove the SSD and put it into another Mac or PC.

On a PC, 32GB of RAM costs just $100 USD. PC video editors can max-out the RAM for very little money.
Of course with Macs, Apple charges about 4 times market value for the RAM. Ouch!

    Matt,
I am a PC user but have been thinking to go Apple Mac Studio due to 12 month 0 interest finance option.
One small question .. if i were to compare these 2 configs which one would you think would be the best when it comes to 4k & 8k video editing.
I would be shooting using my iPhone 12pro max & eventually after a year or so may upgrade to a professional video camera which i am not 100% sure if it be a 8k.. I think 8k is still far for average consumer like me especially when i would be uploading videos on TH-cam and 8k isn't probably yet supported on TH-cam as well.
OPTION 1 : let's say go for mac studio base model with upgraded ram and 32 core and upgraded ssd
OPTION 2 : Go for the config that you recommended in your very recent video but with DDR5 motherboard, DDR5 64 gb RAM, nvdia graphics card 3080 12 GB, CPU as i9
Here's what you recommended as part of OPTION 2
    $1500 - $2000+ Video Editing PC Build Guide 2022
    th-cam.com/video/dL9CtwRPluw/w-d-xo.html
    kit.co/whoismatt/1500-2000-video-editing-pc-2022-edits-4k-6k-8k-raw-video
I am sure your response will help those users who are confused between buying mac vs pc.
The biggest fear that i have is i am a pc user and i don't know how much easy is it going to be as far as transition is concerned. I do want to mention that i work as a IT professional & when i say i fear of switching to mac, it's more related to with little nuisances like learning / getting use to using diff. shortcuts etc.
I intend to use my existing Logitech mouse and keyboard if i were to go with Mac studio.
Looking forward to your valuable insights !
