Digitech The Drop - IN DEPTH Review (a bit too in depth)

  • Digitech's THE DROP is an amazing pedal that kinda makes 7 and 8 String guitars obsolete... no, seriously... you can have the playability of a nice 6 string with good string tension and great attack while stille having the downtuned sound of your favorite swedish death-grind-core band... it works and it's fun.
    Sure, you won't look cool without that surfboard of a neck ion your hands... but maybe that doesn't really matter....

    As stated previously, many fuzzes (especially germanium ones) want to see the high impedance output of a guitar. When the Drop is engaged, it essentially becomes a buffer, dropping the impedance and creating noise issues, in addition to changing the character of the fuzz.

      Fuzz sounds bad, its impedance issue doesnt even matter. I just never use it. Ever. It sounds like broken distortion. I want clean, or heavy, never “fuzzy”

  • @TheCREATlVE

    THE NOISE ISSUE IS VERY SIMPLE
    Most fuzzes want to be first in the chain because they like to see the impedance of the guitar pickups. The drop is true bypass so when it is off it does not affect, but when you engage it the output is low impedance and the fuzz usually get noisier and with more of that painfull high end.
    So just put the drop after de fuzz or buy another kind of fuzz (like a big muff or the boss one)

    • @DragisaBoca
      @DragisaBoca 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for pointing this out, just checked the manual and the output impedance is just 1kΩ... Any idea what hardware would I need to bring this signal back to 10kΩ?

    As an 8-string player, I'd say there is also a limit for how low you can take a fifth. I never play 0-2-2 on the low F# string; an F# power chord on an 8-string should be played as 0-7-9-9, i.e. with an octave F# at the bottom, no C# (the fifth) in between.

    To me, the JEM has slightly less high end, but as you mentioned it has old strings, but further it does sound exactly the same to me. Thanks for this very very in-depth review and confirming my suspicions on some of the physics and workings of the pedal. I'll definitely go get one of these, initially I had the idea to get the white Harley Benton 7string, for lower tunings like A# (so I can do some Breaking Benjamin covers) but then thought they also play Drop C and other bands do Drop B or C#, which I also want to do, so finding out that this pedal is so incredibly transparent and almost latency-less is a great outcome, so I don't have to buy more strings and just use my good guitar for all this.
    Thanks for the amazing review!

    Thank you, so much, for mentioning the bit about hearing (acoustically) the natural tune of the guitar if you're playing at low volume levels. I didn't even think about that.... That was going to be the problem i would have, in my apartment, and you've just saved me time and aggravation. I was hoping to get one of these instead of an additional guitar dedicated to a certain tuning.... I guess there really is 'no free lunch.'

      Nick Simms A possibility, but 1/ I hate playing through headphones, and 2/ ostensibly, the need for the tuning change would be when learning particular songs, and I'd likely need to be listening to that song's playback through a different device. Headphones would muffle the guide track.

    I got the Digitech Whammy 5 for what i use to drop with,(i originally bought it so i could play Becoming by PanterA cause i seen the whammy 5 is what he used for that super squeely note he gets in Becoming, suicide note pt2 etc.... he later used the whammy 1st gen (2 of them) during damageplan and he used 1 whammy to drop tune and 1whammy to make the squeely notes//////this looks very useful though, i like how small that drop pedal is. But i really love how i can use the whammy pedal to get in between tunings-( Doyle wolfgang von frankenstein does this) but im sure not many people know who that is lol

    A little late to the party here, but I just got this pedal recently. It works great for what I use it for…..a singer in one of the bands that I jam with sings a half step down, so now I don’t have to keep retuning. But I’ve noticed (and I’ve been trying to find anyone online who has also experiences this. I found it in your video) that when I use the Drop with my Wampler Plexi Drive mini, it has that same hissing sound you got with the fuzz pedal. Funny though I don’t hear it with my MXR EVH overdrive or the MXR Super Badass Distortion. I was thinking that there was something wrong with the Drop or the Wampler, but I guess it’s just finicky with certain pedals.

    Thanks Henning.
    I've only just discovered these things and, of course, you have a very informative and hilarious video about it.
    I want to get down to DropC#/DropC for a few songs I want to learn - but on a 24.75" scale guitar and I had all sorts of nightmares of going to a 12-56 set of strings and having to widen the nut slots, adjust truss rod, intonation etc etc but this could solve many problems.
    Set up a nice DropD (where it lives anyway) and I'm good to go.
    Now to see if you have done the Morpheus Droptune so I can compare .........

    • @ricksell2877
      @ricksell2877 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Morpheus was a great first of a kind pedal for its day but my understanding is the technology in the Digitech is more modern, chip wise. Same with the EHX Pitchfork. I read that the chip used in the Pitchfork was an older chip style. I’ve owned all 3 and the Digitech was better for me.. It also has a much smaller footprint then the Morpheus, that sucker is BIG. I found that when I dropped them all to low there we’re some strange synth like overtones. If you already tune to D then dropping down to C should be no issue. In the end it comes down to your ears. A few people have also commented on chain placement for the drop when using Fuzz. So play around with it till you find the right spot in your chain. - PureSalem Guitars

    Great review. Great pedal. Been using it for about 2 years (about when it came out). The noise issue. It REQUIRES its OWN power supply. It puts so much noise in other pedals. Even with a Voodoo isolated power supply the noise is bad. Again, Use power supply that comes with it and no daisy chains or even the advertised isolated power supplies. If anyone fines a multiple isolated power supply that this thing stays quiet on ( high gain) please let the world know.
    But all in all a great pedal.

    So my only point of contention with this entire video is the solution to the loose strings on the 8th string is use a set of 9 to 46 and for your 7th string use a 64 and for your 8th string use an 80 gauge, Ernie Ball makes a set for 8 strings that are nine to 46, 64, 80. No more loose strings. And I play mine in drop e, standard tuning 8 string would be an F sharp buddy not an F.

    Hey Henning! Did you learn about low interval limits when studying? It's an interesting concept, though it's worth noting it depends on intonation/tuning system (Western equal temperament gets messy often). Lots of the time I really like that "grind" of low thirds for example, but as is clear on Piano music chord voicings for example, it's pure mud down in the lows if you do that! Would be really interesting to compare similar on a True Temperament guitar, vs a Fretless where you could have pure intervals. Not to necro-post on an older video ;)

I kinda stop hearing the original pitch via the speakers if i get it really loud, but not competelly off. Still at such high volume, it is almost unusable for a home... :(. The issue is almost unoticed with dirty/distorted patches (it depends on the specific patch)

    I hear a little bit of smoke on the water in the beginning segment. Cool riffin nonetheless.

    Hi Henning, nice vid. Do you have any idea how close you could approach CGCFAD tuning with this pedal ?

    Hi, fantastic review! How does this fair playing bluesy chords? I'm thinking about A4, D5, G4, B5 together, i think they're diminished 7th chords? Anyway particularly 3 steps down on this pedal, thanks!

    The difference is so small. I can tell but I rather spend 200 on a pedal and be able to play whatever song I want than buy 4 guitars or have to tune every time I want to learn a song

    I know that you are not supposed to play bass guitars into regular guitar amps. Is there any issue using this peddle with a regular guitar amp?

    "Drop E" aka a Bass Guitar. There is a reason those are 34 inches (that's what she said?) But hey, we all know, dropping makes it more METAAAAAALLL!!!
    But srsly, this thing does a really good job
