You are so right! My Grandad said a cottage garden is about the growth of the gardener, not the plants. He tended the same garden for 50 years. When my Nana had a stroke he kept it beautifully just so she could look at it. That garden was about a marriage, not just pretty flowers.

Can I just say that you're the first person that I've ever watched that has tastefully broken up the video with an ad? "Right after this commercial" actually made me feel like I should watch both ads to earn the next part of the video. Super off-topic but it was well done.
Anyway, what an inspiring video! I live in an apartment with literally no yard for gardening. I watch these kind of videos to live through someone elses passion. I always loved the cottage garden style without even knowing what that was. Just seeing photos in children's books as a kid and in random movie scenes; like Miss Honey's cottage from 'Matilda' or the wild garden from 'The Secret Garden'. I can't wait to see how your garden takes shape!

James, I know this comment is posted 3 years ago. But if you still live in that same apartment, do you at least have a balcony that gets direct sunlight for a few hours?
I was like you, I dreamt of having my own cottage garden. So I ended up planting some flowers and vegetables in containers with success. I was so proud seeing what I grew even though they were in pots. Maybe this is something you could do ❤❤

My grandfather was entering his flowers in the community flower shows and at the age of 87 won 14 first prizes. My parents were amazing gardeners also..I guess I was watching.

@@suburbanhomestead It's wonderful to see how you approach gardening so fearlessly, letting the plants do what they want to do and interfering minimally. Most of TH-cam gardening (and gardening books) emphasises perfection so this is a breath of fresh air. It's also great to see what kinds of tasks you might do to maintain a casual cottage garden like this.

I had a family of seven groundhogs take up residence under my deck one year. I thought they were very cute, but they ate all my flowers, and then the mama groundhog strong armed my tiny dog. I paid a fortune to have them relocated, not exterminated. One tip I learned from that experience is that groundhogs hate mint and will avoid it, so it’s good to throw it into the landscape, although, of course, mint can be invasive. Now I have raccoons that live under my shed and they like to take one bite from each tomato growing on my plants. Your beautiful garden is an inspiration, happy to have stumbled across your channel!

My hollyhocks succumbed to rust this year. So many neighbors commented on missing my hollyhocks....apparently I am not the only one who feels they are a show stopper. I don’t have ground hogs but I do have bunnies. I use this small chicken wire plastic coated in green. I make rings to protect some things through the seedling stages. You can hardly see it among the other plants. Just a thought to foil your nemesis....and get a few hollyhocks to enjoy.

This makes me very grateful to live in a country with few garden mammal invaders! We have rabbits and the Australian possum in NZ, but neither really bother with suburban gardens. The only things I content with are birds pulling out my seedlings from time to time, easily deterred with cheap netting and more than welcome anyway since they eat the snails.

Very informative. A lot of gardening for me is by trial, some things work others don't. Time and patience is the key. In April I had a lot of colour with spring bulbs, now in June that has all died back so this Autumn I am looking for bulbs that have later flowering season and other plants to fill in the gaps and continue the colour throughout the summer and beyond. I am also awful for buying too many seeds/ bulbs and not getting them planted so am trying to be more organised with that now. We get so much joy pulling up to our house now and find ourselves lingering more absorbing what we have slowly developed. We have also noticed other people lingering when out on their walks. I look forward to see what each new day has bought to our ever changing garden.

I live in the PNW and I just have had no luck with Hollyhocks, they get powdery mildew here and also aphids love them. I do have a nice mallow plant but the rabbits liked it too, LOL.

try oak leaf hollyhocks. They are less prone to rust and mildew

I suppose they can't deal with all the humidity.

Most everyone I knew in Tillamook county made sure not to water them, and plant them on the side of the most sun.
PS, I could grow a cactus garden in my dining room, by potting near the window and ignoring them. Would work for succulents too.

I have beautiful hollyhocks but they are fussy to get going. I also have moles and voles and finally found "Giant Detroyer" on Amazon which keeps them under control.

Hi, first time to view your garden, it's a beauty. Thanks for sharing. Also, I am plagued by the little ground hogs, moles, voles, squirrels, chipmunks, etc. I get a lot of relief from them by surrounding my plants, especially bulbs and roses with hair. Any kind of hair. my daughter brings her dog hair, and I go to the salon and beg hair from there, my husband contributes his whisker shavings. It seems the little critters don't like to get hair in their mouths! Ha, ha, to them, big success for me and my plantings.

Those darned critters ate almost all of two varieties of echinacea. So far, my total catch is 8 groundhogs, two chipmunks, and one baby skunks! I have wonderful memories of my grandmother's little garden. Yes, she had hollyhocks.

That is the thing, trapping them helps a bit, but others always appear.

Snapdragons do come back from seed each year, the hollyhocks are bi-annual.
I planted my hollyhock in 2 different beds so one of the beds will always be in bloom .,one year after the other alternating years. My favourite of all time is honeysuckle! The fragrance is remarkable and I love the yellow and white flowers.
While on countryside gardens ,one wouldn’t be complete with out foxglove.
