  • Here are a couple of changes that has really enhanced my listening experience and music room. Inspired by a number of people here in the VC I decided to try and take some small steps to make get the most out of the music I love and just thought I would share my experience. Thanks VC.

    Very cool upgrades Brandon! I've always loved your music room (or music apartment if you will) and it's nice to see you finally have a good sweet spot as well.
    I have some quite big "upgrades" on my music room as well. I hope I manage to complete my plans this year. And I hope I can make a new music room video too...
    Cheers!

    I love these room video's. And I like what you have done with your main listening area. It's very important to sit in the sweet spot when you really want to listen to musik. I actually did a small change to get a little bit further away from my speakers.
    Your new AudioQuest speaker cables looks really good.

      mrhoffame i actually moved my chair up about 1 foot. the right tube trap back about 6 inches and the left tube trap forward about 6 inches to widen my sweetspot much better now. I was reading about the distance between speakers and distance from speakers and it showed i was to far away so i moved up a bit now its sweeter

    • @mrhoffame
      @mrhoffame  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ron Beaudry Did you base things more off your measurements or did you adjust by ear?

    • @RocknRonni
      @RocknRonni 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      By ear. I saw here on you tube the measurements again. So i looked at what i was doing again, because from time to time things get moved. I bought a new man cave reclining couch a while back. Now I was sitting a little to far back, so i moved forward, wow this is better, sweet spot is bigger, I can move my head and the voice is still centered much better. I have tube traps at the first reflection point on the wall but I use the reflective side to reflect the sound here gives a much wider soundstage but it needs to be balanced to keep focus. My bigger tube traps are in the corner to negate the standing waves to help with bass. I read a article in stereophile where they used tube traps with my speakers. so i got some ideas from that. Anyways these measurements just like turntable arm height are just a good starting point. You always need to tweak the setup by ear for your room variables.

    • @RocknRonni
      @RocknRonni 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      again thanks for sharing your experience of getting more enjoyment from better sound. I hope some in the vc get inspired enough to tweak their setups.

    Great video! I am relatively new to watching VC videos but I am a long time audiophile. You did ALL of the right things in setting up your stereo. You have those B&W's properly set up and that was a wonderful idea of having the record cabinets on each side as the diffusion will be similar in the left and right channels. Good calls also on the wire upgrades, you don't have to spend a ton on cables. As a Martin Logan owner, I am wondering which pair you have. It may be that Marantz is not the right amp t drive them. I have CLS I's and they are a pain to drive, but a good high current amp like a used Classe or Krell should drive the smaller ML's with no problems. Then use your Marantz as a preamp/tuner. Once again, you are on the right track!

Brandon awesome and nice guitar too.

    • @mrhoffame
      @mrhoffame  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      lovell andrew I think we all kind of go through phases. For the longest time I just wanted as much vinyl with stuff that I loved in my collection. Dollar bins are havens for that right lol? Then I went to collectables. Mainly seeking grails. Then I went to artist collection. Now I'm at the point of condition and box set collections. I think we often times change and grow with music an our collections just like anything else in life. Eventually we will all mature into the type of collectors we will be for the most part. Great thing is there is now right or wrong. It's just all about making your collection what you enjoy. I tell you what though, I know I have pulled over 200 lps from collection so far and I'm barely at the 1/2 way mark. That has been kind of hard lol.

    Hi Brandon hope your well. nice video :) glad you found your sweet spot. my first thought for the last 15yr when changing my room is based around the sweet spot weather it be hifi or cinema lol everything else comes seccond. Had a few audioquest cables in my time had type 4 and type 6 speaker cable infact think i have still got it in the loft. should be a very good upgrade. stock cables?! BOOOOO i expected more from you lol. sounds like your having fun checking all those records hope it doesnt take to long to finish it all. Your becoming obsessed with box sets just like i am :)

    • @mrhoffame
      @mrhoffame  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry :( I had not cable knowledge lol. It really is funny, but it seems in so many cases the sharing of vinyl and the concepts of audio equipment didn't really go hand in hand here in the VC. Most of us, including myself, have spent 95% of our time talking about albums and music and never touching on the equipment and set up. I would have even thought to address my cables if it had not been for tuturle talking about the benefits of it. I have a lot to learn for sure.

    I actually got free remnant slabs of marble and granite for under speaker stands on the floor, and under tt. If u wanna experiment a bit, try an integrated tube amp, or separate tube preamp for your phono stage....verrry sweet sound, i have not turned back...sold off a lot of unused gear, got a Yaqin MC-100b tube amp, not cheap, took me a while to afford it, but w right tubes...omg...music just seems much more live, like musicians are in the room. Best of luck, new subscriber look fwd to more of your videos! Peace

All my receivers are vintage receivers and a few people keep telling me I need to get a modern day, audiophile type receiver. Hopefully one day I can afford one lol. Good stuff. While music is the reason we are all here, the quality of your listening experience is really important. Thanks for the video.

    • @mrhoffame
      @mrhoffame  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. I think we all go through these stages of listening and buying music. I guess it's really hard to value a great system/ set up when a vast majority of us have never had the experience in the first place lol. Most of us just went for "HOW LOUD" lol. Matter of fact my awareness of system set ups really didn't even come into play until I wend to a show in Chicago. Going room to room, hearing and seeing those systems, and listening to everyone talk about the "small" things just really got me hooked. I knew I didn't have the $40,000 to build a system, but I did decide at that point to make the most of what I had and could afford. It certainly has been a journey from those first 8 dollar bin records I purchased years ago lol

    Mo-Fi's are nice, in fact they are very good. Don't overlook imports though. The first Dire Straits record, on the Vertigo (Dutch, I believe) label. The American pressing is still really good, but OMG when I heard that import! Another really good one is Magazine, by Heart on the original Mushroom label, if you can find it. Honestly, some of the best fun I have had was discovering new great stuff to listen to.

    Also wanna use the old measuring tape and a mirror on the wall 'reflection' test. That helps measure the perfect 'triangle' for listening.
    Killer set up!

      @mrhoffame  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man. I actually kind of did it backwards. I move pieces around over and over (listening to the same piece of music) an then once my ear picked things up just right I then measured to see how close I was to the triangle. Wasn't too bad. I off only about 6 inches :)

    Sounds to me like what you described early on was that you have a good sound stage. Your records act as diffusers and you have the right size speakers for that area. Not too "live" and not to "Soft".

    Are the two row horizontal racks on the right side of the chair the same one that are the tall shelves behind the chair? Also the racks with two row and a box to flip through on top, is that just a one row put on top?

    • @mrhoffame
      @mrhoffame  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The two horizontal racks are ikea shelves. On one side there are 2 2x2 shelves and on the other side that is a 2x4. The Tall one in the back is a 5x5. The ones with the flip top are two shelves I picked up at a local record store. Basically an Ikea advertisement here lol.

    Bill Dixon was a true artist! His 1967 rca victor album Intents and purposes is a classic. The international phonograph mini-album cd is a beautiful analogue like reissue if you cant find an original vinyl as they are expensive.Nice set-up and collection!

    Love these room tours. The room and listening space looks awesome after the changes. Looks like you have a lot of space in the room and that alone would call for a dedicated space for listening just like you have created now. Looks very inviting and comfy, just like it should.
    I have been through the changing cable thing for many years and spend crazy money on interconnects and speaker cables so I am not really comfortable commenting on that in detail. But I would nevertheless like to share one observation I have made during my experiments and tryouts: damping of the room with carpets and furniture is cheaper than high end interconnects and in many cases results in more significant improvements of the listening experience.

      @mrhoffame  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any feedback or opinions you have based on your experiences I would love to hear my friend. I am so new to the audiophile side of things that I am just looking to gather information. One thing I was curious about. When it comes to worrying about sound treatments, damping, etc. Does that make as big a difference when playing a system a lower volumes as it might have at much higher levels?

    • @dubmusiq
      @dubmusiq 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mrhoffame
      Room treatments are essentially about reducing the amount of reflections (or "sound bounces" if you like) of the sound waves in a room. All uncovered space, floors, walls and roofs in a room bounces the sound coming from the speakers. For example: first spot of reflection (bounce) is on the floor just in front of the speaker, then the sound bounces to the wall on the side of the speaker and eventually it hits the wall behind the sweet spot. The result of this are micro echos and the sound looses detail and resolution. The trick is to reduce the number of reflections. The most basic stuff is to put a carpet on the floor, and a chair or couch in the middle of the room, this will improve damping. Store records along the walls and you have diffusers at no cost.
      On the other hand, too much damping and diffusion will impact the listening negatively as highs might be lost and the sound comes out dull and lifeless. It takes a little bit of experimenting by moving pillows and carpets around the speakers and sweet spot. Sometimes it is beneficial to add some damping behind the speakers, sometimes it will kill the sound. It depends on speaker design. Moving the speaker up close to the wall behind the speaker will almost always result in more bass, move out the speaker on inch at the time till the bass reproduction is optimized. Test toe-in of the speakers, like 45 degrees, or less, listen and change again. It usually takes a few weeks but it is worth it in the end. Taking one change at the time will keep you in control of all the changes, and it will be possible to evaluate the impact of each change.
      And yes, these simple steps will improve the listening experience even at low volumes. And the neighbors will approve of the change as the sound leakage will also be reduced when you turn up the volume.
      Cheers,
      --Michael

    What sets are those? In the city we get nice items and just hook them all up, it looks like woven Kevlar cone woofers hooked up to some, vintage cardboard cone amplifier. Won't sound too great.

    very nice!!! like the marantz I have the 2270 but 5 months ago I found a Sansui 7900z and I've got to say the Sansui just sounds better....really like how you did the Crib

    • @mrhoffame
      @mrhoffame  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know man. I got a Sansui G-5000 and I still favor the Marantz. I find that I tend to like receivers that have a fuller/stronger low end at lower volumes. Being able to hear more of a thickness at lower volumes with having to turn up the bass input and I have found that the vintage Marantz do that better than any other. Its all about our ear of course lol.

    • @mrhoffame
      @mrhoffame  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steve Viau Yep. That is ALL Ikea my friend lol. It is two shelves, one stacked on top of the other. I put doors on the bottom one as you can see. That platform the turntable is on is an extra door I bought and just bought a pair of table legs from Ikea and screw those to the bottom. They are adjustable so you can level it for your turn table. So two shelves, 3 doors, and 2 pair of legs from Ikea and you have this lol.

    Wow nice idea. HiFi people are so OCD and gear focused. I'm doing same but with focus on a huge painting (nothing electronic). Going from my 4415 to a power amp digital system, all white and silver. I listen to cuts, rarely whole vinyl so I'm going digital to focus on the music. Swapping the Pioneer Plasma for a painting, lol. 😊👍

    • @mrhoffame
      @mrhoffame  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know it is kind of funny because as much as I love vinyl, I would say 65-70% of my listening is actually listening to cuts and not entire records from front to back lol. I'm sure that is why I do all the formats when it comes to music be it vinyl, cd, cassette, and mp3. I have moved since this video and I will doing a new updated room tour in about a week. Keep and eye out if you are curious to see what I call the new "Boom Boom Room" LOL>

    The thing that is impressive with this video is the fact that the actual music is front and center with this room. Having great audio equipment is extremely important, but at the end of the day, it's the actual music that has to stand out. We definitely see that music is important to you with your collection and the care you put into it. Congrats!
