Hello, My Friend. I was born and raised in Walworth and was just about to attend Michael Faraday Primary School when they told us that all our terraced homes, which were at the heart of the Community were being knocked down to be replaced by THe Aylesbury in The 1960s. I lived overlooking the market and had a great 29 years there from 1954-1983. There is a video on here " East Street 1971 " which summarises my memories of the area I reluctantly left on 9/5/83. That date is indelibly imprinted on mr forever as I started a new life in Bexley but 37 years later I STILL miss it hugely much as I love my life here. Where did you move to, please?
@@Isleofskye I've moved to purley and I love it here, such a nice quiet area lovely to raise kids in. I'm so happy that I've found someone who lived in aylesbury before the tower blocks, I have always been searching for pictures and videos of what aylesbury was like before but there are rarely any unfortunately. What was it like living there before? I'm sure the layout has completely changed, was Burgess park always there? And also was east street market there before the tower blocks? Do you have any videos or pictures of your time before?
I remember as a young police officer on foot patrol in the very early 1980's passing under Missenden and having a TV set thrown off the upper floors, deliberately aimed at me. It landed 3metres from me , fortunately.
The supreme irony is that my Great-Aunt's Family owned 5 Terraced Houses which were " compulsorily purchased" and pulled down to build the bloody Aylesbury back in the 1960's and I lived in one of those street and, luckily, we got moved to East Street, where the Market is and I lived there, happily, for 28 years before joining the mass migration out of London in May,1983, 35 years ago but though I love living right on the edge of South-East London I STILL bitterly miss the buzz of that great , lively area just 2/3 miles from The West End and the heart of The City and Central London.
@@stephen3654 LOL........42% of ALL Londoners were born outside Britain and when you add 2nd/3rd/4th Generations from The Asiatic Continent and The Caribbean immigrants Post-1948 Windrush plus all the other ethnicities, currently in London(there are over 200 languages spoken in THe Borough Of Southwark alone) you can see how much THe White/British indigenous London populace has diminished.By 2015 only One birth in 10 was to that racial group whereas when I grew up in Inner London,I do not recall hearing a foreign accent until I was nearly 17 in South East London. All those people who are no longer there are not all dead.
It was an ok place to grow up in the 70s, people looked after their flats and knew most of their neighbours .I lived at 26 Gayhurst until 1981 we were glad to get out by then.
I used to go there alot I even had a job on there when I was 16. lucky i knew people there everyone was getting robbed on the job. good and bad memories there
These central London properties are worth billions now and the councils are deliberately making people to move out and later it would be given to developers in the name of development and the councillors would be paid a lot of money under the table. this is the irony of democracy.
They weren't all lovely terraced houses some were prity rundown, I lived in Surrey Square and watched the old houses pulled down and the Aylesbury being built. All me mates had to be moved away to make room for it, destroyed the community sadly
@@keithhowes402 I know my Nan lived on the heygate then Aylesbury estate would of been better to refurbish the old slums instead of building estates with the money 💰 it only became the slums of the future no community no body taking pride sweeping their doorsteps every body knew each other etc glad it’s being knocked down 👍🏻
I remember them being built and thought Rabbit hutches. Would go to wimpy bar in the Elephant and Castle for a banana split or knickerbocker glory with me Nan.
you could walk from the elephant and castle to peckham without crossing any major roads in 1981 a couple kids got knocked off a bike a scooter by missiles coming off the walkways and one died there was a knock on the door i was arrested for the allegation of murder ....tart i went out with who lived on missenden told them she was with me which was a lie so the old bill knew something wasnt right it turns out i walked her home she went in and as soon as i had gone she went back out again and then the guy on the bike got killed and she said she was with me, it wasnt too long after that they started to take the walkways down, the place had it name in the old bill shop if you went to report you car stolen the first words were have you tried the aylesbury and peckham estate .....all designed by an idiot fancy putting underground parking never used for parking but for dumping stolen bikes and cars so they would be found
I don't understand how people can just destroy these homes like this. I'm sure at 1 point in time those where very nice apartments to live in now there all to hell & having dog fights that's sickening I would have done something about that if I'd saw that going on.I hate people that fight dogs their sorry common people.
Every time I've walked through that estate its always been a ghost town. But you still hear about little things happening here and there. Not dangerous at all for civilians if you ask me.
Have you been in the summer the area is very very lively in the summer time, its used to be more lively in the early 2000s-2010 but they got rid of the fesivals so its not as lively as it used to be, but summer times in aylesbury is always a nice lively area to be in. Winter not so much, quite a sh!tty place in the winter.
This was a staunch LABOUR area. When I lived there it had the most Social Housing in THe whole Country (97%) and was so Labour that THe Labour Party had their Headquarters in The Walworth Road. I worked for Southwark and Lewisham Councils. On the first day, I made the near-fatal (lol) mistake of walking back INTO the Office at exactly 5pm and almost got knocked down in the stampede to get out which summed it up :)
The land is too valuable so clear out people who need a council home and sell it off to developers to make money by building properties that will never be used as homes just nice little investment 'units' for people on the other side of the world, what a rotten country we've become.
I mean these are for homeless. They are in really bad areas, and really bad conditions. My aunt lived in a tower block looking just the same as this in Durham. When I visited her, the floor was hard concrete on the hallway, and the floor was yellow stains due to people pissing in the hall way. As you walked up the stairs, you saw gangs of druggies in the hallway playing about. It’s a shame :(
Lived in Aylesbury for 23 years and I've never seen a dog fight in my life.
Amelia stephenson do you still love there?
Exactly.

Looks like the place where the channel 4 ident from 2004 was filmed
These "regeneration" schemes are shocking, both on Aylesbury and Heygate. Interesting film, sobering to have the kids' views.
I used to live in Aylesbury Estate during the mid 80s till the 2000 plus, and not once did I see any dog fights.
With planes?
They made a music video in the estate a few years ago, Aylesbury boy remix.. check it out

Think so!

Does anyone have any info on Prestwood or Chesham in the 80s?
I grew up on the estate, it used to be a great community. No dog fights in my 20yrs on the estate.
Last time I saw a dog fight was in Holland Park.
I lived in chartridge was beautiful when new

Has nothing to do with democracy.
The girl back in 2013 said: the community will grow stronger
Me in 2024: Yep your correct!
Why are dog fights something you associate with Poland? xD
They knocked down lovely terraced houses with a nice community to build this hell hole needs to be demolished ASAP ☝️
