Hey, I got one of those RX 560s from XFX, too! I paid... Uh... $140 for it. Hey, I was desperate and it was in the middle of the mining craze. It's still the best video card I've ever bought. ... Until then, I have a cool looking Sapphire Pulse that does nothing else that I paid $75 for. I was able to build a nice system at the end of last year, though. All new parts. It's running an Athlon 200GE, 16 GB 3200MHz RAM, 1 TB NVME SSD, (It's an Intel 660 I was able to get for $80. I didn't need it, but I WANTED it!) I want to put in a micro ATX later, and use the mITX for a true small form factor build using my 1600AF with a decent video card, once I can afford it. It will use that RX 560 until I decide what I want to pair with it. You know, once I get it built. It WILL have a 2TB NVME drive, though. For the video card, at this moment, I'm thinking it'll end up being a GTX 1660 Super or an RX 580/590; Maybe a 5600XT. Maybe.

This was basically how i built all my gaming pc's when i was younger. 10yrs ago when i was oems made upgrading horrible but i never ran into such ridiculous gpu compatibility issues.
I'm an old man of 60 yrs and I'm a non-techie, but I went ahead and did a minor upgrade to my Inspiron 530 with a Wolfdale Socket and it was something trying to get the *RIGHT* info for the CPU itself (as a non-techie), but I got it to a satisfying point. I like the smooth way you edit your videos also.
I've done similar builds in the past but nothing to the degree you are here...I've taken used Dell desktops and workstations with working RAM, CPU and storage, wiped the hard drives, put in graphics cards, and used them for gaming, or given them to friends or relatives as gifts. I love that you made such an effort to keep the build within your target budget, and TBH I've been in a position before where a budget salvage build like this was my only option. I also love that you keep the language G-rated so I can watch these with my kids. Keep up the good work brother!
lenovo is known for aggressively implementing whitelist stuff for hardware, i would strongly avoid thinkcentres etc. Dell for prebuilt desktop modding is the best, but you probably found that out already:(

That $80 PC got expensive pretty quickly... Having said that, I appreciate that you were willing to admit that things don't always go smoothly with these homemade builds. Also... where the heck are you getting these deals on GPUs? Smokes the GT 240 I bought for my Batocera system for $34 with S&H.
@@NiNjaTurtLe697 The fact that it's an i7 doesn't really matter... it's absolutely ancient and gets smoked by any modern i3. Look on ebay, guarantee you can find one for next to nothing.
@@BIGAPEGANGLEADER I would not say it will get smoked. It performs about the same as a modern I3 but the fact he got the I7 so cheap. Still many I3's still is shipped with 2 cores and 4 treads, while the I7 870 has 4 cores and 8 treads and can handle overclocking.
@@ikramshahar44 no i3 has shipped with under 8 threads since the i3 10100k released in early 2020 , well over a year and a half ago. The 10100k can be found for absurdly cheaply in the UK, US and Europe. The i3 10100k has 8 threads, turbos to 4.3ghz and has massive, massive IPC improvements over the i7 870. Yes, it smokes the i7. It has approx double the single threaded performance and nearly triple the multi thread according to passmark, which is a good general benchmark. In some applications, I imagine the i3 pulls even further ahead.
@@BIGAPEGANGLEADER Well still the I3 sucks when it comes to price and performance. Even modern I3's are way more expensive than Ryzen 3 which is can out perform a I7. Even the U model core I3's suck in laptops.

I built a budget PC like this. Picked up a Dell mini tower 9020. Threw my 1660 in it. Did not have to replace the PSU because I just bought an 6 pin to Sata adaptor to run the power through the mb. It has served me very well.
Don't be scared off. The money savings are great but you do have to know what you're doing. I bought the same used rig as this but with a faster CPU (i74790). All I did was change the PSU and it runs a GTX1660Ti no problems. I haven't bought a new PC for 20 years.

You also could have tried to find a modified bios to flash it to allow you to use an AMD GPU (does away with the GPU whitelist) and do away with a lot of limitations in the BIOS. I had to flash the bios in my laptop to remove the whitelist so that I could use an external GPU on my laptop, Because the whitelist only allowed WiFi cards to be used on that socket.
i had an intel 3rd gen Lenovo "gaming" pc and the bios stopped being supported immediately and had no updates and there were ZERO modded bios for it. I could not run any 900 series or newer cards or any 600 or 700 series cards that had more then 2GB VRAM. nothing after UEFI worked, including SSDs! it was a nightmare waste of time and money upgrading it.

Thats likely, ive had to do bios updates to drop in xeons and i7s in Asus, Hp, lenovo and Dell prebuilts. So i just jeep a lot of old pentiums and i3s just for this purpose.
@@Pablo-so1df Thats a lot of effort to get a CPU running in a 10 year old PC. I've done 1vyrain and Coreboot to several ThinkPads and I never want to do it again.
Definitely a good idea to check research on the various OEMs. Having experience with Thinkpads I know Lenovo is big into whitelists. I went with an HP 8200 because I got a cheap deal on a barebones model and so far it has worked with anything that will physically fit in the case.
:( thanks for taking us along the struggle haha, I know this all too well. I've run into the issue of using AMD RX cards on mobo's that don't support UEFI GPU's.

Ryan Winters you right, big miss on my part! This video is a real life rendition of why people shouldn’t DIY using Lenovo/HP etc. parts because there are ALWAYS issues. That is the reason you can find $12 motherboards on eBay. I hope people trying to save a buck on their first DIY computer pay a lot of attention to what happens in this video and not focus on the “$80” price tag

You can get an adaptor to use a ATX supply. You need to add a plate where the old supply and pop the sence pins of a fan into the slim connector. And the power for the fan over to the CPU cooler with a splitter. I made a mount with a steel ruler to hold the PSU and cut a slot for a pcie x16 riser. So it's got a Rx 580 8gb as well. Works fine as a editing pc. The z series has sata 3 and pcie 3. So it was a bargain. 3770 4c/8t 32gb ram added a olmaster 4 bay drive cage for 4 SSD intel pro duel slot nic. Thing is a little beast and didn't spend that much on it. The intel NIC is grouped so it pulls from the Nas and the onboard NIC is for a net connection. SSD scratch disk SSD render drive SSD network drive and SSD system drive. And it has hardware raid options from the bios set up
:( I feel like we’ve all been through a build like this before. My latest was an 1150 motherboard trying to get an i5 4690 to work that I got for an absolute steal. After getting different processors and trying different memory and verifying my components on another motherboard I found that the ez flash bios update that you can do inside of the bios didn’t work as advertised and needed to be done inside of windows. Upon performing this process I was then able to upgrade to the new processor and now I have myself a fairly powerful and efficient machine to use to learn some of the programming I hope to wrap around automating a network.
This is rather interesting - I'm watching you on a reclaimed Lenovo M Series ThinkCenter that had an AMD A8 quad-core processor and 8 GB of RAM. As it has on-chip graphics, all I had to add was a boot SSD, a spinning data drive, and then install Linux Mint. It talks to a 1080P monitor and shows off your dance moves very well indeed. Canadian dollars being smaller than yours, I'm up to about $110 total as it is now. Will shortly crank up Skpye to talk to my brother three provinces east of here. Gotta love reuse!
:( great vid! I like to see old hardware being utilized. This video helped eleviate my anxiety with the dang 3080 launch. It reminded me that my 3900x + gtx 1080 is still an awesome build.
The prebuilts I've used were dell and HP. I remembered when I first considered using a prebuilt for a gaming pc, I learned that Lenovo is a pain to work with.
I've had pretty good luck with HP and dell and lenovo's newer systems (excluding proprietary mobo connectors on lenovo). i guess their older machines were just tougher compatibility wise
yea what's the deal with that. I have 3 lenovo laptops . I got my first one a tbinkpad e540 i3 include with my computer administration class back in the day i tried to put a simple new wd ssd 500 in and I can't get the drivers to work or show up. I'm not to bumbed cuz I got a i7 7gen 16 gb 500ssd yoga for like 300 brand new on offer up and an ideapad 330 i7 8gen 20gb 500ssd for like 600 almost a couple years ago and they both work for my music production needs. but kinda want to know why the old think pad won't show drivers i got it to work with the music program reason just no internet drives and a few other odd things missing
Wouldn't a cheaper route have been to just get a motherboard that supports the i7 (really strong CPU, esp at the price you got it) and the GPU you alread had? Granted, the i3 was dirt cheap, but it's definitely throttling this build hard. Still a super fun project, definitely earned you a new sub here and on Twitch :)
Really liked your look of true happiness when it posted and when the splash screen showed 😅 I also buy used parts, pimp it up and resell and what this video did highlight is also the risk we take for the good deals. If you were truly only had the 80 dollar then you would not have a functional PC.. Also it shows the time and effort taken to get these older things to work properly, so if you were to resell this your time spent would make a lousy salary 😬 New sub here!
I thought that I was cursed considering how many problems I run into and how much time I waste when trying to get something working properly. I'm relieved it's not just me. Greetings from Bosnia!
I'm happy that there is someone to show people whats the limit to those pc's, cuz i'm one of those people who went through every single one of these problems and would hope that people who want to try to build pc's like these know all of this before startin. Have a nice day all and thumbs up for the video.
@@itzgeoro3500 Your parents should buy you a GPU, a radeon is like $30 and very bad for modern games. I wonder how old is the processor too. Well, hopefully they buy you a xbox X for your Birthday or a better PC
in Australia these ex lease HP/Lenovo/Dell computers are sold cheaply by 'recyclers'. They buy them by the *pallet* at wholesale auctions and give them a clean, inspection and clean install the OS. They are sold to the public with a warranty. They will usually offer a RAM or GPU upgrade at modest cost.
This makes me thankful that we have something like the 2200G for entry level gaming. $300 new and cheaper used, there is really no excuse to go back to old hardware these days imo. It cost less than an iphone and you can do the most basic video editing too. I enjoyed your video and thanks for the upload. keep it going~
Well thank you for asking. So just recently, I have taken to restoring and upgrading a 2011 Dell Inspiron 570. I had to first wipe the HDD to get the computer back to a healthy working condition. After that I realized that it had a little horsepower and that if I fed it my wallet that I could have a great mid tier gaming PC for under $300. I got to work researching on forums and making my parts list. Ordered everything from eBay and Amazon, get almost everything in without much issue, but I run into a problem with my heatsink and that my mounting holes on my mobo don't match the mounting holes that would fit my cpu, end up drilling new holes in the mounting bracket and mounting the heatsink with no issues. Had to play with my sata cables because my computer's BIOS is locked. Graphics card fans failed as well. Also had to update my BIOS to be able to support the amount of ram that I was using. In the end, I have an unsuspecting looking prebuilt that hides an AMD Phenom II X4, Hyper 212 Evo, AMD RX 570 (4gb), 16gb Corsair DDR3 ram, and a ADATA 120gb SSD that is a boot drive... All for under $300. In games like GTA V I can get away with 50-60FPS average and I don't dip below 30FPS.
There's so damned much of it, companies buy new computers and dump their old ones on the market, lots of cheap stuff if you're lucky and don't mind older components
I feel your pain and your JOY, but the next time you celebrate,,,,, I'm going to need to see a back flip!!!!! I have been building and repairing laptops and PC's since 1995 and it's good to see someone going thru the same process I go thru (it was supposed to work) I get PISSED but " I'm gonna' make this thing work" attitude is why I continue to do it. Plus I spent a whole $15 for the damn box. Keep going because when it works, IT WAS DAMN WORT IT !!!!!! Excellent video ( because it is real world stuff).
I have an 6 year old Dell Inspiron 3847 desktop with a Core i5 Quad Core (4th Gen) that I ended up turning into my home server/gaming machine. I started the project after the original HDD went out right around the new year. It now has a Samsung SATA SSD, a Samsung 960 EVO M.2 drive on a PCIe 1x adapter card, and two WD 12TB enterprise drives running a RAID 1 setup. I replaced the original NVIDIA GeForce 705 2GB card with a used Nvidia 1660 ti mini card that someone took out of a newer Dell machine. I made sure that the new card came out of a prebuilt so that I didn't have to deal with setting it up as you would with third party OEMs. EVGA 600W PSU and 16 GB of RAM from Timetec maxed out the build. I primarily run old games so the video card was overkill, but was essential for my PCSX2 emulator to get a smooth 60 FPS. I am a hobbyist photographer hence why I have the 12TB drives for mirrored storage. The last thing to do to the machine is to put in the a Devil's Canyon Core i7 4790K processor once I have the funds to do it with.
Theres a 24 pin to 16 pin psu adapter specifically for this. I have the same system as you, i used the adapter to use a thermaltake 650w power supply. I think i paid like 5 bucks on ebay for it
I have one of these Lenovo towers. I upgraded CPU to i3 530, RAM to 8GB, put in a Quadro 2000, and an old 64GB SATA SSD. That combo is close to max specs for the model. Goal wasn't gaming, but a cheap OpenStack server. It does alright and is surprisingly quick. I think I put a total of $125 into it. Now I run Ubuntu Studio on it and use it for making electronic music.
Hey I bought one of these Lenovo M series computers today I am glad I found your video as I'm going to look to upgrade it myself as a tech at your trial and error has taught me some valuable lessons about perseverance and patient thank you bro have a blessed evening
Great video! As a custom builder, I NEVER use Lenovo to try creating a custom build for any reason. Even HP is hit and miss. Dell is the way to go, although check documentation before buying, whether it will accept the components you want to use.
Oh hell yeah those old Think centres are pretty great, I've got one that had an i7-3470 so I maxed the ram out and now it's actually my Thinking centre, it serves my virtual machines to work, media and storage servers

I believe those HP Z workstation power supplies are proprietary. They have the usual atx plug, but several wires are different.
Even worser are SFF units, it doesn't work out nicely
The connection are all proprietary!
I love your appreciation for value. Often lacking in modern society :(
This is rather interesting - I'm watching you on a reclaimed Lenovo M Series ThinkCenter that had an AMD A8 quad-core processor and 8 GB of RAM.
