    Michael Caine was working on a film and after a take the director said something like “I can’t see what you’re doing.” Caine replied “Where are you watching from?”. The director said where he was, which was some distance away. Caine said, “Oh well I am acting to the camera lens” implying that you would have to be right next to the camera, or looking through it, to see the nuanced performance. That’s the angle where the audience will be watching from.

    The truly great actors know how to leave a little bit of themselves in every character, so their audience can connect to a part of the real person who brings life to the character.

    Ron is a national treasure. And I'm guessing the Robards take was in the phenomenal "Parenthood". And the scene in Forrest Gump where Hanks REALLY emoted for me is when he sees Jenny's kid, figures out it's his, worries he may be "special" like him, is relieved he isn't… all in five seconds. All facially.

      I think the Jason Robards scene in Parenthood with Robin Williams when the mob is after his son for either a drug or gambling debt. He struggles with it since he keeps having to rescue him. Just a tremendous scene in one of my favorite movies.

    It's about keeping it simple. There's no effort when you are in tune with the objective in its purest, uncolored form. There's a level of personal honesty that shines through when you eliminate the context of the story and come from your heart,. Ir is the constant goal of all great actors

    0:52 Ron is referring to his 1989 film _Parenthood_ with Jason Robards, Steve Martin and Mary Steenburgen, the film that inspired the TV series of the same name

    I think one sign of an "actor's director" is a director who can be honest with his/her actors about what they want and why. No b.s. about why their character should move to the left here, just "hey the lighting looks better here, can you find a way to walk this way?" Or like Howard said, "I want a sadder face."

    • @ingvarhallstrom2306
      @ingvarhallstrom2306 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but different actors uses different techniques, it only works if the director is on the same level. And that was what Howard was talking about, his immediate difficulty to tackle the problem of how to get on the same page as Robards. It's getting there that is the problem. "Actor's directors" usually have a stable of actors and friends they have worked with for many years, and therefore have a direct channel to when working.

    Hitchcock despised actors. Ron Howard loves them. Both have made great movies. Discuss.

    • @NellieKAdaba
      @NellieKAdaba 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True

    • @lynnturman8157
      @lynnturman8157 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't think Hitchcock despised actors. But he did see them as just one part of the movie he'd already made in his head. And so when an actor did something that wasn't what he'd already imagined, it caused problems. That's also true with most directors nowadays who are technologically savvy & special effects savvy but not so great with actors. The other extreme is the "actor's" director, directors who are primarily concerned with performance and who are supportive of letting the actor create the character independent of the director or what was in the script. The interesting thing about Ron Howard is he's one of the few directors adept at both. He can do the big special effects movies like a Spielberg & also get great performances from the actors like a Lumet or a Kazan.

    • @sophiarodriguez3706
      @sophiarodriguez3706 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, Hitchcock was on a pretty big power trip and thought he always knew best in every situation, whereas Ron Howard seems to be more adaptable and open to other possibilities, even though he knows he’s still in charge as the director. It speaks to different styles of directing, but what it really reveals is how much ego each of these men possessed.

    • @rolanddeschain6089
      @rolanddeschain6089 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hitchcock was fully aware of the art of good acting. He was only convinced that the actors were fully in the service of the work of art, in this case his screenplay and his instruction.
      When he was asked, why he called actors horses, he once said that he never said actor's were horses, they just should be treated like horses.

    RH should have recognized the talent in Glenn Close. I liked her acting in "Sarah, Plain, and Tall", but instead of promoting her, RH chose to laugh at her, maybe bc she is a woman, and maybe he felt intimidated by her. Nonetheless, GC has resiliently gone on to create memorable roles in great movies, one of the most recent being "The Wife" in which she was awarded the Golden Globe, I believe. So, sometimes a director's ego does a disservice, and the most astute viewers can sense when something is not quite whole as Oppie would have been. ☮️
