OK, we now booked a cruise on Pride of America. We will take a couple days before and a couple days after the cruise to enjoy the sights on Oahu. Thank you for this series on Oahu and we are now watching the cruise series. We were on Oahu a few years ago and have wanted to go back and your series prompted us to go ahead and do it.
My wife and I honeymooned on the Pride of Hawaii (now Jade). It was the inaugural voyage getting the ship to Hawaii. We picked up the PoH in LA. 2006. Did the Road to Hana. Ah, memories. Thank you!
It does not rain much in the beach areas of Maui where the resorts are, but Hana and Wailuku typically get rain. Maui needs all the rain it can get due to the recent drought conditions. I did many visits to Maui in the 1980's and Maui was No Ka Oi. Loved them all. Maui got to busy and popular since the 90's and beyond. Will just stay on Oahu and enjoy the best of all Worlds. Everyone will hopefully visit the Islands. For a first time trip you should include Oahu and then pick another island, that will cover a week to ten days. A Circle Islands cruise is the best.
I had never heard of the gypsy guide before. What a great idea!! Since my Wife and I are going to Oahu next month, we will surely be purchasing the guide. Thanks for your VLOGS!! They are very enjoyable and informative!!
I went on the road to Haha up in the mountains, and ppl live up there. There's a place to get banana nut bread really good. Beach where the turtle nest, the rainbow trees, absolute Beautiful, Enjoy
When we were in Maui I was surprised at the humidity there. We are from Kansas so Im used to it. The road to Hana was awesome. We spent around 10 hours on that drive checking out everything.
2 issues to consider if you drive yourself on road to Hana. Due to all the twists and curves on a 2 lane highway , the driver has to keep his eyes on the road and not the scenery. Also rental cars are not allowed going around the southern tip due to dirt roads and wash outs. So you would have to drive back the same way instead of going around the tip and back up the western coast. That’s why I think it might be better to take van tour so someone else drives. They also have 4 wheel drive so they are allowed on the southern tip road.
We enjoyed being able to go at our own pace and choose our stops. But an organized tour is definitely the right choice for anyone with any doubts about driving that road!! :D
I drove the road to Hana Twice on the same day in College with a bunch of the U of H Travel Industry Management students who toured the Islands. I was a fellow student and driver. One of the gals had to catch an early flight, however we had only two small sedan cars, so had to make the trip to Kahalui airport and back to Hana. It was beautiful. That was the last time I drove to Hana 40 years ago . Loved Lahaina and Kaanapali, and Wailea, Haleakala, and Napili and Kihei too. One drive to Hana is a lifetime memory. Personally I would take a tour bus and let them drive.
I have never been carsick in my life except for on our Road to Hana journey. Still not sure why it affected me so badly. And we have driven on mountain roads in Tennessee, the Caribbean, and all over Europe.
Well, shoot, how disappointing that you cannot get the shave-ice on the ship!!b Congrats on getting to Hana! I thought the reviews for it were mixed so we enjoyed a different tour in Maui! How fun to see your adventures!!
My husband just booked us for March 2023. I showed him your video. How many hours was your trip for the Road to Hana? My husband is so excited to do this.
Question: Do you think snorkelling at Hanauma Bay is worth it?We are so happy to have learned about the Gypsy guide from you. We used it in April in Kauai, Oahu and Hilo. It was fantastic. Thank you so much. Plus watching your Hawaii series helped so much with our planning. I am rewatching because in October we sail from Honolulu to Sydney! We are spending 1 night at Aulani Disney resort.
Despite having to pay admission and reserve a time slot, Hanauma Bay was one of the best snorkeling spots we found across all the Hawaiian island, especially for the variety of fish and healthy coral you'll find there. We didn't go back there when we just hit Hawaii this past April, but we always remember how gorgeous it was!! :P
The only parking zone across from the pier is a shopping center parking lot with questionable information of whether it’s legal to park overnight there or not. I’d check with your Turo host to see if they have approved suggestions for overnight parking that they’re comfortable with!! :D
Amazing videos...... quick questions. waianapanapa park asking for a time slot for a reservation. Any idea, how long did it take you guys to get there after all your stops? I know u guys didn't go to waianapanapa state park, because u didn't have a reservation. Any idea after how many hours you guys pass that sign? your answer will be easy for me to pick a time slot.
Love it! Don't know if I'll ever get to Hawaii. You know what would be good for us curious minds? When you do your morning intro, let us know your time in port. I know on this one you said overnight. But that would be helpful for context of doing things.
@@ashleys4652 unfortunately, not if it's way past the cruise. We sometimes watch older ones, depending on our upcoming itinerary, just to get ideas for our ports.
We tried to be slightly more aware of that for this trip, making sure to show the “back on board” signs as we left the ship, and trying to mention what time it was as we came into port, just as a reference!! :P
Hi Dee & Jay. Love your videos. I’m a recent subscriber and love the quality of the videos you all capture. You’ve inspired me to book a family cruise coming up in the end of October. I wanted to ask what camera would you recommend for someone to purchase that takes not only good pictures, but also videos (in and out of the water)? We want to be able took back at our home movies and feel like we are there again. Perhaps something that is user friendly and doesn’t break the bank? Thank you in advanced and again love your videos 😊
thanks for the updates. We are heading back for our 2nd POA cruise in November. Looks like all the port car rental pop ups are gone? We may try Turo do you mind sharing your host name and where you parked overnight in Maui. Thanks
Hello ParaDeeJy, we got many ideas from your videos for our upcoming 12/10/22 Hawaiian cruise including renting from Turo, however, our host want us to pick-up the car at the airport. Please tell us the name of the host you use to get the car delivered at the port and where did you park overnight.

We rented through Turo, which I always describe as a sort of AirBNB for cars, ha ha… private owners renting out their own vehicles, so presumably it came from their house to the port for us to use.
I understand Pride of America is the only US flagged cruise ship (at least with the major lines). What differences did you find aboard, compared to all the other cruising you've done?
Other than being extraordinarily short-staffed causing many venues around the ship to be permanently closed on our sailing, we didn’t notice any differences. It felt like a “normal” cruise!! :D
In 1984 we listened to a cassette tape in our car in Groton\Mystic Connecticut, in the car telling us about history and sights to see, LOL , we almost got a divorce trying to keep up with it…. 😙😜
Hi, just wondering if you are able to park the car anywhere near the cruise terminal overnight if you want to rent the car for the two days that you are in port
Thinking about this cruise for 2024. How would rate the ship, over all? Hoping by then everything will be open. Yelp gave this ship very poor rating !.
We skipped a couple of the waterfall hikes we’d planned due to the weather, but still a great experience in the end. We’ll just have to get back there sometime!! :P

All other beaches in Oahu are free, and Oahu has the best beaches overall for swimming etc. However you can tan on any sea shore beach, so enjoy.
