As a State Trooper who carried a 686 4" for almost a decade before we switched over to 4006s, my opinion here - hands down the winner the S&W. It was designed as a work gun and I carried it almost every day. It shot well, reliably and never gave a problem. It was accurate, had a decent trigger. Personally, I preferred our previous issued guns, M66s or M19s, but the L frame made any issues with steady diets of 357 Magnum loads a moot point although I never experienced any problems with K frames & magnums myself. The Colt. always was a looker but a work gun stay holstered most of the time or in your hand at the range or pointed at suspects so there is no time to gawk at rounded edges. Colts were always finished better but overall S&Ws were always chosen over them both as department issued weapons or personal purchases and cost was a big factor. But not at the price of a lower quality product. Personally, I'd take a nice condition M28 4" over any Python for work, that is unless I had back my M27 3.5" off duty back which I traded once and always regrated. I will say the S&W 586 (blued) handled smoother than the stainless version and looked as nice as a Python in Royal Blue. I always wished my outfit opted for those blued guns instead of stainless steel.

Interestingly, the Python is the least recommended for IDPA. Alternatively, the top shooters usually go with Smith and Wesson or Ruger. However, it all depends on what you want out of it. Do you want a show gun or a gun to take afield. It's like a woman or a car. Sure, she looks very good, but you only take her out to show her off as a status symbol. The practical man chooses the woman who will be a life partner, and the reliable car. He doesn't need status symbols.

I’m like you, Colt all the way. Smith and Wesson makes a good firearm, there’s no doubt, but let’s face it, unless you’re Jerry Miculec you probably look at, fondle and wipe down your guns more than you get to shoot them. And a Colt is very easy to look at! But you know, I’ve seen a lot of reviews comparing the two and price always comes up. But only half the price equation comes up. Yeh… you can buy two of those Smith and Wessons for the price of one Colt. But nobody ever talks about what that Colt is worth 10-15 years down the road compared to what you paid for it. ALL of my snake guns are worth more now than what I paid for them. Some of them two to three times what I paid for them! Just saying
I wish that Colt and Smith would make a 22 LR / 22 WMR D/A convertible revolver like Taurus does. But they are too money greedy, they would rather sell you a whole new gun instead. 😠

I do agree. The Smith can be made to operate like fhe Colt but it will never look like it. Thanks for watching
It is all what you are use to. I am more use to Colt
Python all day!
I agree
@@TerryBenton I bet if I said Smith, you would agree too.
@@morriszachrisson8359 I like smiths but it is not a python
Colt looks better but Smith shoots better❤.
Gotcha
S&W Internal Locks are a SUPER DEAL BREAKER for consumers in the market.
I like the older ones better
The smith and wesson ejection rod is much better than on the colt python
The crane on the colt python is much better than on the smith and wesson
The lock up on the colt python is better than on the smith and wesson.
The sights on the smith and wesson is much better than on the colt python
Thanks for pointing those things out
Sir I see your video is not old .I'm sure you know the SMITH &WESSON 686plus now doesn't have a fireing pin . Please let your viewers know . I bought mine in December 2022 Talo edition unfluted cylinder 3INCH barrel black and silver wood grips sweet man sweet. I CC every day 👍🏿🎯👍🏿
Your new Smith and wesson has a hammer mounted firing pin?
Just saying
@@rodneyerwin1512 you are 100 percent correct. Thanks for watching
Good info, thanks
Thanks for watching
I wish that Colt and Smith would make a 22 LR / 22 WMR D/A convertible revolver like Taurus does. But they are too money greedy, they would rather sell you a whole new gun instead. 😠
This is true. They do make a 22 king cobra now. But yes it is a entirely new gun
If I were a master Smith, I’d take the Python.
They are both wonderful. But you do not have to be a master Smith to own a python. They are not fragile.
@@TerryBenton we all rely on anecdotal experience of ourselves and friends. That’s what I based my comment on. We can agree to disagree.
@bombastic0717 my reply was not meant to be derogatory. It is a fact. You do not have to know how to work on guns to own a colt python. I was making the statement. I ha e shot thousands of rounds through then. All that internet BS is exactly that. BS. Both of these revolvers are awesome. You just have to put some Smith work in the 686 to even the playing field. Thank you for watching
7 rounds in my 686.
Pretty cool. The Colt never made a 7 shot. That is one point for the Smith.
@@TerryBenton The 7 round is the combat magnum.
You have a really nice collection, brother. If you're ever looking to add to it, you might want to consider picking up the model 627 in beautiful bright stainless 8-shot .357. Really nice.
@@Mark72672 Thank you so much. I have seen one of those before. They are super cool
No sir no fireing pin on the hammer 👍🏿 I paid $800.00 December 2022 .my finesse is sweet 😊
That is super cool. Tha KS you for watching
Speaking of Swiss watches: nice Sub! 🍻
Thank you for watching
@@TerryBenton My pleasure; what a great and detailed look at these two classics.
@mikegreen2214 I have alot of comparison videos. I even have one on a couple of subs.
@@TerryBentonSubsribed. Thanks, I'll check 'em out. I'm pretty new to pistols, but been into watches for a long time - just picked up the new Sea-Dweller, in fact. Looking forward to checking out your take on them!
@mikegreen2214 thank you. Thr seadweller is a cool watch
I prefer the Colt clockwise cylinder rotation and the pull cylinder release but Like the firing pin on the hammer of the Smith, the looks, finish and lockup of the Colt is the best of the best.Is it worth the extra money? YES!!
Wait until you see the project I am doing. I have an old trooper that was chambered in 38 special. It is being converted to 357. It will ha e a python barrel and a wide spur hammer like the python with a hammer mounted firing pin and be finished in royal blue.
@@TerryBenton Sounds like its going to be the real poor mans Python and I can't wait until you show it.
@@dennistaylor6486 It will be cool. Should not be much longer
As long as it works im wanting 2 get a new blued python 4.25 inch they beefed the frame up less movin parts internally cant vouch 4 it but hear the double action is smoother i own a newer king cobra 3" and 686 plus 3" pachmayer grips and trigger job as far as the realease lever goes pull feels better on my joints 2 me in the movie Magnum Force the guy had no problem speed loading in the combat championship i like colt better its more exotic diffrent sexier more quality craftsmanship
I own a new python. I have videos on it. You will surely like it. Thanks for watching
@@TerryBenton i will subscribe as your a man that just teached a younger generation i also own a taurus 6 inch was my uncles my dad handed it 2 me as he died last year around this time im even interest in a taurus 608 its an 8 shot ported as well nothing wrong with it as some say buy American i get the theory thou
@joebom1981 anything handed down by your dad is more valuable than anything on the store.

@@joebom1981 I have a Marlin from the 1940s. I have a video on it also. Super cool man
I own both amd I love the python; but, the the 686 for the price is better. Lighter trigger pull and just as accurate. Sorry, but you really dont know what youre talking about.
I suppose everyone has their own opinion. But I will point out you own a python. If it was not a good gun you probably would have taken the money you spent on it and bought 2 more of the better Smiths. Anyway, thanks for watching. I try to be honest.
You obviously have a bias when it comes to the Python. But nobody is looking at how nice your gun is in a gun fight! The S&W is a superior WORK gun!
I am not exactly biased, but I do prefer the colt over the smith. I am a lot more familiar with shooting Colts. I would not call either one superior. Thanks for watching
Those grips dont look original.
Both grips are original. Not sure which ones you are referring to but it might just be the light
I bought a colt python a new one i traded it to a 686-3 smith & wesson the 686 is a better gun the rear sights on the new python are junk i will take smith over colts any day
The sitesxhsve improves but I agree. This particular onenos an old stainless python. It is not even close out of the box. The comt is a far superior made gin in build quality. I have several of both. I have various videos on them. Thank you for watching
Colt 10 times better than Smith,
Maybe not 10 times better but i so prefer the Colts
S&W 686: A beautiful Tool.
Colt Python: A work of Art that doubles as a tool.
Functionally they are nearly identical in fact you can argue the 686 is better from durability but you'd have to really run them both.
what the Python has is only worth it to somebody who really will sit & appreciate the art that is the gun
I can agree with that
I have a Smith &Wesson 686 357 Mag and the firing pin is not on the hammer
They changed it on the newer ones.
Man said “I cannot meewve the cylinder” on the Colt while he plain as day wiggles the cylinder…
The Cokt cylinder does not money at all with the trigger pressed and it is locked up. If you can move it in the locked up position, I will give it to you. That is how confident I am when I say that. Thank you for watching
