Ireland: My Second Home

  • When I say I travel to Ireland a lot, what I really mean is that my family and I travel to one specific part of the country... where my dad grew up. And so, year by year, its now turned into a familiar place for me and my brothers too.
Theres a certain amount of pilgrimage to these holidays, and by that I mean there are places that we just have to go, regardless of how many times we've been before. The first beach for example, we've swam there many times before, and on occasion even canoed out to the islands in the distance.
Now that I'm getting older and live away from home, it had actually been around four years since I'd last had a proper trip over and I realised I was starting to miss the place. I can see why my dad makes the effort to go over so often, its to see the family, but also to visit the places that have become more significant than just a point on a map.
Years ago, we nearly all moved out here and every-time we come back I imagine how much different my life would have been. This isn't home, but I'm ever aware of my roots here, and I want to make the effort to visit more often.
