- Purcell's most important collection of keyboard music appeared posthumously in 1696, and contains his eight suites for keyboard. In 1720 Handel published his Suites de pièces, a representative corpus of a genre composed between Hamburg and London. The performance of this harpsichord repertoire on the piano offers a new insight into the greatness of this music. This concert was held during the period of severe restrictions on audiences in concert halls by COVID 19.

Varvara Nepomnyashchaya was born in Moscow in 1983. After studying for eleven years with Prof. Lidija Grigorieva at the Russian Gnessins Academy of Music, Born in Moscow, Varvara studied at the Gnessin State Musical College and continued her studies at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory with Mikhail Voskressensky and later with Evgeni Koroliov in Hamburg. In 2006 she was awarded at the Leipzig Bach Competition and in 2012 she was launched onto the international scene after winning the first Prize of the Concours Géza Anda in Zürich. Varvara is curious about every form of art and her wide repertoire includes all different periods. She has her own website.
Those that love her performance (as we do at the Fundación March) will be happy to know that there is abogue video of her on this channel performing Russian music
Good to know!
Beautiful and meditative baroque music on a modern grand piano, wonderfully played by Varvara. I find nothing wrong in playing this on a modern instrument. 'Let a thousand flowers bloom'.
The only times I object to the use of a piano rather than a fortepiano or harpsichord is when the music calls for several instruments playing together. The piano is a beautiful instrument, but it tends to take over the stage in music before the Romantic period. The first time I heard the Haydn Trios using a Fortepiano, violin, cello combination, I was astounded how much fuller the Fortepiano version of the Trios sounded. The violin and cello lines came through so beautifully and nicely.
This is wonderful music for all of us who try to focus on the importance of a good life and try to neclect all the things that hinder us from this, as stress, lack of confidence, lack of concentration, and the sometimes annoying daily life we all know. The art of listening carefully. I try my best. With Varvara as my guide in this exploration of old music I feel full of confidence. So thank you Varvara and all this music of Purcell, Händel and Bach for making me feel free. You are a wonderful pianist.
For me, Händel, my friends and family make all the difference. Without friends and family, Händel would do the job single-handed.
@@fleongoogle2429 Yes Händel is great, and his work for cembalo is great, and I also think Varvaras interperetations on piano of his music is great. We are all living in this world, and as you say, without friends and family and music, this would be a much duller place.
I first thought I was wrong to write this. And english isn´t my first language. But thank you all, I am evidently not the only one to feel this way. This music is comforting and has a lot of knowledge in it. Musical knowledge. And human knowledge.

Wonderful comment
Wonderful, refreshing take on Baroque piano pieces!! Inspires me to practice....
Baroque instrumental, MY FAVE!!!
beautifully sensitive and melodious. An artist with a noble soul.
Her skill at playing trills is overwhelming!
Yes, and the Purcell pieces on piano were new to me. Varvara is really a great artist in playing baroque music on a modern piano.
I am utterly delighted to have discovered this treasure of a recital. The music is simply wonderful, and the playing is passionate, skilled, and utterly convincing. Kudos also to the choice of piano and the recording. This is beautiful in all regards, and rarely have I felt so compelled to listen to every note, phase, and individual piece in a recital as I feel in this one. I am downloading scores from IMSLP as quickly as I can. Varvara, thank you for sharing your art with us!
As for playing this on a piano, I would urge listeners to consider simply that the richness of tone and the dynamic expressivity of a modern piano allows the music to sing in a way that it never can on a harpsichord, much as I love the sound of both instruments. Music is about expression of human emotion, as well as the delight our minds experience from the notes themselves and their horizontal and vertical arrangements. Consider that the same piece played on each instrument is not the same piece, in total. Is that not acceptable? Each allows us to hear different things in the music, just as we see different things when walking around a single mountain. Personally, I think that is marvelous!
Thank you Tom! I completely agree.
Lovely & sensitive playing - beautiful shape to the line; well articulated. SO glad there's at least TH-cam to share this more broadly! WELL PLAYED!!! BRAVA!!!!
Pure, elegant, and expressive.
Delightful music and excellent performance! Thank you!
Wonderful performance! It was a shame that the audience was so small in person. Thank goodness for TH-cam so that the work can get the appreciation it deserves. .
This concert was held in March 2021, when in Europe there were still many audience restrictions in auditoriums. This concert could only be attended by a very limited group of people, but it was broadcast via streaming and radio. Fortunately, we recorded it and now we can enjoy it.
I dont see it a shame that the audience was small. March 2021 was Covid time. And Im very happy this consert now can bee seen by millions od people.

Beautiful! Insightful and pacifying the tired mind. Thank you for sharing!🌹
Agreed.
Absolutely amazing. Thanks for streaming.
Excellent and beautiful performance - from all musical aspects. Brava!!! Every phrase was clearly heard and well expressed. The trills were wonderfully executed, as if they were played on a harpsichord and not on a piano - I suppose due to the fact that there was almost no use of the pedals, but a very good and sensitive fingers' touch. Thank you Varvara for giving us 1:16:20 pure enjoyment. I consider you to be one of the best Baroque performers ever.
Yes, I am very happy listening to this, thank you!
I couldn’t stop listening to- that’s a good sign, for sure 👍 Beautiful and with noblesse🌹
"Brutal", welch eine Hingabe und Leidenschaft im Spiel, Vollkommenheit mit der Musik und welch eine Einheit mit der Harmonie; den seinen gibt's der Herr im Schlaf 🤗
Wonderful concert!
bravo! so few pianists play good Handel! good music is sadly often appreciated by a few. thank you, maestro Varvara!
I myself have no experience of Händel played on a piano. But I trust your words.
the best one is here from Richter: th-cam.com/video/HNJPDUHKTlc/w-d-xo.html@@staffanolofsson8201
The sad man from Leipzig is overplayed, this has to change
Wonderful.
Love it! „Musikantisch“ in the best sense. Bravaaaa!
Great!
beautiful. Very well done!
Wonderful performance! Very impressive playing
Simplemente, maravilloso!!!!!!!
Fantastic, refreshing, purity! Thank you madame V.
Magnifique!
beautiful

Great works. Great pianist. Thumbs up. Hats off. Greetings from Mexico City.
Pace, breath and intonation are aligned and balanced with sensitivity and creative spirit. Multo obrigado dos Acores. Please come to Ireland in April :) I will go anywhere to hear you 'live' ~
Splendido Varvara: Favorite GFH Suite G Minor HWV 432
Merci.
Thanks
Brava!
Beautiful playing and love those facial expressions!
Such beautiful phrasing! Marvelous!
Yes, her phrasing in Purcell, which I never heard before, is amazing. And also in all her other music.
BRAVA!!
BRAVO!!!!!! BRAVO!!!!!!!! BRAVO!!!!!!!!
Muy cute cute bonito
The great thing about these piano pieces from Purcell and Handel is how they make me appreciate Bach even more
My friend, one does not listen to Purcell for the same things one listens for in JS Bach. That a rose is a glory takes nothing from violets, violas, or buttercups. Seriously.
1:09:46 Aria “Schafe konnen sicher weiden” from Cantata BWV 208 (arrangement for piano by Egon Petri)
remarcable
One of the best on youtube
That’s very encouraging. We’ll keep feeding this channel with the finest videos of live concerts from the Fundación March. Thanks for your words.
Out of this world! Baroque is so much better on modern piano! Passionate interpretation!
Still, I think it also can be good on a chembalo. But with this interpretation I am totally enchanted.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
As an Englishman, I endorse this broadcast 😉
Wonderfully sensitive playing. Gosh, it says in the notes that JS Bach lived from (16856-1750). I had no idea! (smiley face here).
Thanks for noting this: Bach is like God, so he might well be immortal ;-) Yet the little mistake has now been corrected.
So sad that this musical artist had such a restricted audience at the beginning of the pandemic. She is just a great performer!
That’s why we invited her the following season to perform Russian music. It was another extraordinary concert which will be published here soon. Stay tuned!
@@marchvivo Yes, I will!
Would have been nice to have a listing of the pieces and the time they were played
Have you tried to click on “more” below the video? The full track list with timings is waiting for you there. Have fun!
Such a fantastic pianist! I'm excited. She should play in the large concert hall of a famous house and not to sparse applause in front of a small audience in a hall with poor acoustics without a microphone and sound technology.
Hallo! The acoustics and the microphone technics in this are marvelous. I wonder about what equipement you are listening at?
"No pedal!" - GG
Great video.
I invite you to listen to my composition Rêveries baroques. Thank you for listening to music ☘🎹😍
Händel's suite in g minor is not of this world.
Stumbles in the current of opposing voices. Accents jump out in the wrong place. From here there is no free flow of the musical river. There is still a lot to learn - from the surface inwards
I my opinion this music is well articulated. I have tried to listen to stubling, never heard it. So our opinins differ. But I respect your opinion.
Sorry, I will spell it better: "stumbling" and "opinions". Says a swede.
Listen more and judge less….
A lot of technical imperfections and mistakes, unfortunately....
She sits in the posture of Glenn Gould.😊
mejor al clave
For those that prefer Handel on harpsichord, this video may be interesting. Benjamin Alard performs "Scarlatti meets Handel, Rameau and Bach": th-cam.com/video/yKiSrlM784s/w-d-xo.html
Please do something about the ergonomics here. Musicians need to take better care. This posture, leaning in this way, will cause problems at least later on.
Nothing "Baroque" about this interpretation !
The Piano has been giving so much insight to Baroque composers for a couple of centuries... so much that you seem to be blinded by it :(
Your floating tempi are indeed expressive, but Baroque dancers would find them hard to follow!
very displeasing at times.
The sole idea of playing Baroque on the piano is absolutely absurd. There were no pianos in those times.
@@JuliaPikalova so?
I like it 😊
Luckily there were no TH-cam comments either back then.
And there were also no recordings in those times so why are you listening to them anyway nowadays?
Still there is almost a whole mankind trying to play Baroque on piano. Many of them are very famous in their playing. Can they all be wrong? No, I dont think so. Every time has its expression, we all love the cembalo and the spinette and the forte piano and then the grand piano. As I know it is not forbidden to play old music on a new instrument. Anyone can like what they like. Freedom for all.
