First off, thanks for making this list, I always thought it would be an interesting lost for you to make. Second, I'd like to throw in the Hound Class from Etrian Odyssey V. Not only have I seen this countdown at least five times or so because it's such a freaking amazing list (if I had to pick something to be for a setting of some kind, Beastmaster would be my go-to choice), but I also can't help but chuckle at the fact that mr. Duarte actually used danish game footage of Far Cry Primal when talking about Takkar (being a Dane, I noticed it right away...and I laughed my butt off because I loved it so much...)
Oscar are you in my head? because this is exactly the countdown I wanted to see but thought it was never gonna happen because I didn't think that there were enough characters to either qualify or quantify as beastmasters. Holy Shit
One of my favorite beastmasters is the Monster Riders from Monster Hunter Stories. They fight alongside some pretty fantastic monsters, including the Rathalos, the Lagiacrus, the Seregios, and, my personal favorite, the Nargacuga.
Aww Oscar, you flatter me! Thank you so much for covering this; I agree with pretty much all of your choices! I look forward to your next countdown! ^^
Elise Arainai Hi Elise! I had a lot of fun working with Oscar on this one. Thank you for the suggestion, and for your constant support of the channel. Hope you enjoyed it!
First off frigging awesome that you played the awesome theme from the very underrated turok evolution. (Real great game.) Second, like many of your countdowns they're always unique and I hope you don't quit making these anytime soon.
I recently finished Octopath Traveler and that's what made me want to finally watch this. Gotta say this is a really intriguing list. Also I never knew you could capture boss monsters in Octopath, then again I'm usually more focused on my survival and most bosses are human so I guess that makes sense
I know this is a weird pick, but the monster riders from Monster Hunter Stories. Most monsters can be tamed as monsties and be highly customized, ever seen an ice Zinogre? How about a fire Zamtrios or a dragon Rathalos? Plus the riders are hunters too, fighting alongside the monsties, it ticks all the boxes for me and it helps that the monsters in Monster Hunter are so varied and powerful
Green scorpion thank you! You just helped me come up with the subclass for my DnD character. Btw my character uses a half red tailed hawk half Phoenix, or a red tailed Phoenix for short, as his partner. Her name is raptor...and she'll rip you into scorching shreds.
A another beast-master would be Skadi and her wolf from Smite: Battlegrounds of the Gods. Her entire gameplay mechanic is the use of her wolf sort of similar to how Poppy is used and they fight together instead of the wolf doing all the work.
Tales of Symphonia 2 is honestly not a great game, but Emil really carried it for me. I really wanted to know where the story was going with him, and the twist actually hit me hard. The one with Emil, anyway. Literally every other twist was obvious as hell.
Thinking about it, Ash Ketchum would be fun in Smash considering he could use the various Pokemon he had throughout the series to fight alongside him, like his Melmetal and Incineroar being used for a forward Smash, Nagandneel and Pikachu using Thunderbolt as an Neutral Special, Torterra and Sceptile being used for a down special.
If you’re not doing weapons month anymore. I had an idea for an elemental category. During the geomancer list you mentioned plant users as being separated. I have a name for them. Chloromancers.
Absolutely loved the list and all the bits of wordplay strewn throughout. The recurring Bear bit was especially fun to watch. As for one of my favorites not on the list...Lemme delve into a favorite franchise of mine that, IMO, is criminally underused by the countdown community. If yall haven't played them then it's understandable, but if your 3DS is still ticking give Etrian Odyssey IV or 2 Untold a shot, they work as fantastic entry points and have demos that you can carry over your progress with. Especially given the two potential candidates for this topic, the Wildling and the Hound from EOIII and EOV respectively. Starting with the Wildling, I'm still really sad that not only did we not get an EO3Untold, but that he didn't show up in Nexus because he REALLY needed an upgrade. Aesthetically and on paper he works out well, as a jungle man who works with nature and can call forth assorted animals of the islands around Armoroad to attack foes and inflict ailments, which include snakes, hawks, tigers, and IIRC a freaking elephant! He also enters battle himself with a spear, so it's not like the animals did all the heavy lifting...or much at all in some cases. Sadly...the RNG was not in his favor, and outside of exploiting a glitch with the Sea Boss Scylla for stupid easy Level grinding, he wasn't a very potent combatant. His kit didn't have much synergy with itself, his infliction rate wasn't very high, and /multiple/ classes vied for that coveted open 6th slot in the party, so with him not as effective as the Ninja and friends, he took a backseat to the rest of the cast and is likely the least used member of the entire EOIII roster. Even the Farmer got more use because of the material grind and their kit letting them avoid battle entirely to focus on gathering. Having a pocket team of 5 Farmers wasn't just common, but damn near /mandatory/. As a result, Ailments were not as effective in EOIII as they were in other titles. Quite a shame that the Wildling got shafted, as conceptually he's solid and has decent potential. He really could have used the remake buff, but with the team at Atlus looking towards the future, I doubt we'll ever see EO3U surface from the depths. EOV comes around many years after EOIII and brings us the Hound, who in a nice twist is a valuable asset to practically ANY party. Part of what makes him work is that in EOV, summoned party adds take up a completely separate row in battle, so instead of multiple characters trying to share one open spot, there's three open spots that you can use a few different classes to play around with. Also, instead of having a different animal for each Ailment, the Hound focuses on two, each with a separate skill tree you can work on, the Hawks that can harry from the sky and inflict various ailments, and the canine that gives the Hound its name. And IMO, the hound part of the Hound is the most valuable! Hawks are frail and meant for an offensive role, but the Dog can apply passive healing for the party and tank hits like a champ, keeping the party alive longer through tough battles. While you can work through both trees, Skill Points are finite and thus it's best to focus on one. In fact the whole Second Name system makes focusing on one basically mandatory. I used one in my playthrough focusing on the protective pooch because I love me some passive heals that let me focus on offense more, as well as having that extra line of defense. Between the Hound and the Dragoon's Bunkers, my party was able to weather damn near everything...except that damn Superboss and his freaking Party Wipe Nuke! Sheesh, what is with late game challenges rewarding raw DPS way more than one's ability to weather a constant onslaught and keep ticking? That aside, the Hound is a great cast in a quirky lineup of characters, even by Etrian Odyssey standards (I mean come on, in the same game as the all-for-nature Wildling you can recruit an actual Robot depending on your choices through the game! Some of the rosters get intensive). They'll always have your back as you and your team of 5 ascend the great Yggdrasil Labyrinth to learn the truth of the world.
For the Pokemon slot,I honestly would have went with the protagonist from Pokemon Ranger 3 Guardian Signs. Honestly the Rangers in general feel like better picks than the trainers in this case to me,and with the special partner of Ukulele Pichu in that game who comes with you for your whole journey, plus the signs you can use to call upon some of the legendaries you battled and befriended for their special abilities,PR3's protagonist is probably the best choice of the characters from that side series for this list. ....Also this is off topic, but Ukulele Pichu is extremely adorable and I wish they made a plushie of him.
I'm assuming next list involves bugs. Here's my honorable mention: Arietta (Tales of the Abyss) Sora and Riku (Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance) . . . maybe. Noel and Sarah (Final Fantasy XIII-2)
Honorable Mention: Cynthia from Pokémon. Commands a fighting jackal, poisonous flora fauna, siren, a GHOST, a giant slug, a fae creature, and a F***ING LAND SHARK
Video game dancers. Usually dancing is a way to show emotion but can be used as a weapon for experienced fighters. Usually, characters who uses this style are portrayed as wild, like Majima from the Yakuza series.
Ignoring all the things I want to say about different entries on this list, it is very good. But I'd like to come up with a new entry. And I have a number of choices that would be a bit problematic. (Fina and Cupil, Joseph Bertrand III, and the Radiance) So, to keep from getting bogged down in semantics, let's take a look at Riju and Patricia. Riju is the head of the Garudo Tribe in Breath of the Wild, recently appointed due to the death of her mother and still quite young and uncertain of herself. After asking Link to get the Thunder Helm back from the Yiga, she meets Link in the desert to help him board Divine Beast Vah Nabooris, using the Thunder Helm to protect the pair from the giant bot's lightning blasts. But she's not just doing this on foot. She's doing it riding a sand seal, a creature native to the desert that can swim through the sands at great speeds. And in Riju's case, her personal pet, Patricia, who she's raised for most of her life. If that was all, I wouldn't even bring Riju up, but then Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity decided to bring 4 warriors from the future to save the Champions, and Riju and Patricia arrive to save Urbosa's life. Funny thing is that Riju's playstyle is very weird by the standards of Warriors games. Usually, the fighter performs combos to take out multiple enemies at once, but Riju focuses on mobility and charging into foes with dash attacks, with Patricia even having a rage mode to make her attacks even fiercer, but always under Riju's control. Not much else to say, though the upgrade quests make it very clear just how close Riju and Patricia are to each other. It kinda warms my heart. I hope we see more of her - I mean, them - in Breath of the Wild 2.
I'd add Shadow from the Dead to Rights series to that list not only is Shadow in the thick of the fight against the criminals plaguing Grant City alongside adopted human brother/police partner Jack, but in Dead to Rights: Retribution Shadow was made playable and revealed Shadow can do useful things like sniff out clues, and retrieve items that Jack needs, and of course the popular Timber Wolf/Alaskan Malamute Hybrid does what made it a fan-favorite in the first place turn criminals into living doggy treats/chew toys on Jack's command, plus DTR: Retribution's Shadow sections it's revealed that Shadow is smart enough to lure enemies in closer for a stealth mauling via barking.
If I was gonna improve this list in anyway... I would have made an inclusion of Rider and Rathy from Monster Hunter Stories.. Mostly because that game is very much trying to make a kinship between the monster and their rider, it's technically more mount based... but in the highest for of technical, as a lot of the game is focused on fighting alongside your monstie and even performing kinship attacks... I think they are some of the biggest epitomes of what a 'Beastmaster' truly is! I would assume you never played the game, but a props up to mentioning fossil fighters! Love that series so much~
10. I also had God of War on my mind with that. 9. Was hoping for Arietta from the Abyss, but Emil's other side is cool. Also it's not like he's the only wuss in the Tales Of series (Karol from Vesperia and Luca from Innocence comes to mind). And it's not like he doesn't grow out of it. 8. Yeah was expecting her to come in. And honestly, I don't find her Judgement incarnation unbearable IMO. 7. Of course she's on the list, why wouldn't she? 5. Yeah. The McNinja and his dog from SamSho's pretty awesome. 3. Yeah you can't go wrong with Red. He's a legend in the Pokemon franchise. So Top 10 Scorpions next or? Also love the outro change.
Though I understand why she didn’t make the cut, I’d like to nominate as an honorable mention Minette Napkatti from Bravely Second. Sadly we don’t see a lot of battle capabilities, since her Catmancer job is kinda just a sucky Blue Mage, but in cutscenes we see her use cats around the world for her “informeowtion superhighway”, plus she can silently command even the tamest of cats to kill you. And apparently house cats are very deadly.
Two honorable mentions I thought of that don't quite hit the rules. 1) Flak from Borderlands 3. Three beasts to use and two Action Skills based on beasts, one your equipped pet and the other summoning a new beast. But he does most of the fighting himself and most builds don't really use the pet. 2) Joker from Persona 5. Most of his Personas are enemies you meet in the game, with the only exception being ones you fuse, and the game forces you to put focus on using your Persona's, especially since physical hits are less accurate. But, Personas are of equal intelligence.

Gotta say, I'm AMAZED at the lack of... well, the character my screen name is based on--Olimar. This man single-handedly turned a life or death situation into a conservation effort that made an entire species not only survive, but made them prolific. He is kind of a dictator, sure, but think about it. The Pikmin were on the verge of extinction. They were inept. They didn't have the intelligence and cooperation skills to make their species survive. Olimar, a one inch tall cargo hauler who got into an accident, single-handedly trained this entire species to fend for themselves, and he saved his own life (and his company) in the process.
Beast Masters were always some of the more humane characters, I mean you kind of have to be to tame and coexist with them. I'm expecting a pokemon trainer (probably Red if specifics are needed) and Rexar on here somewhere, but as a playable one I usually think of the Ranger class from Guild Wars, even more so 2. Sure you have your typical dogs, birds, and bears, but you also have access to giant spiders, twintailed scorpions (called carrions), salamanders, sharks, and even jellyfish. And that was just from when I played it years ago. Now it has access to many unique creatures, and even wyverns. You can even command them to heal yourselves, protect allies, or even revive them. It has its focus on their fair share of weapons and traps, but their weapon attacks usually call upon the strength of various animals such as with maul, swoop, or hornet sting. And none of this even goes into Soulbeast subclass where they merge with their companion for even more prowess. As far as Beast masters go, this class always comes to mind.
Pretty good list, I'd say. Nice selection throughout. I do like your list, but I think that you did miss one particular "beastmaster" in regards to outlying series, since you brought up a ton of monster collector games. The Rider from Monster Hunter Stories. Normally, with Riders in the Monster Hunter universe, you require a Kinship Stone that allows them to bond themselves with all manner of monsters raised from eggs to ride and fight alongside them. They're actively in the thick of it with their monster companions for each and every battle they face. However, the main Rider character in MHS managed to not only hatch but bond with a Rathalos hatchling while still a child themselves without that Kinship Stone, and that bond carries over throughout the story as well. Through their Kinship Ore, there isn't a single monster in the Monster Hunter universe that wouldn't be potentially available to them as a raisable and rideable companion. Only limited by game mechanics. I think that they're worth discussing in this follow-up video that you've got planned. Also, FL4K from Borderlands 3 needs to be discussed as well.
After seeing this topic I figured that Rexxar would be on the list even if I a) never played dota 1 and b) never got a chance to play as him in heroes of the storm, but I didn't expect him to be that high.
I've played this game 3 times, that's how much I love this game. Also I named the boy MC Jeager Pants. MC standing for Main Character and Jeager based on Pacific Rim; since Trico is a giant. I created the name as a joke but it stood when I was showing my brother the game.
I know he probably never played it but I feel Lute (the protagonist) from monster hunter stories should be here since the whole point of the game is taming monsters and getting them to fight alongside you. Getting monsters like Rathalos and Zinogre to hunt other monsters with you get buffs and use their signature attacks.
It's not a beastmaster list without pokemon. Now to try to find out the next countdown Im not sure if this guy counts, but Stranger from strangers wrath ( a spinoff of abes oddworld) uses small critters and uses them as ammo on his crossbow to bounty enemies. ( I cant remember the animal names) he uses squirrels to distract, spiders to tie up, fuzzies to attack and bait, sniper wasp for sniping, skunks for a gas bomb, bats for actually bombs, and a few others
25:49 i only hear about pokemon whene the arbok tank debutted in the anime and when the haertgold and soulsilver games were coming out but yeah red is a badass
Top 10 dogs? I got picks. *Rush - Megaman *The Duck Hunt Dog - Duck Hunt *The Companion Dog - Fable 2 and 3 *Koromaru - Persona 3 *D-Dog - Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain *Any Dog Pokemon - Pokemon *Polterpup - Luigi's Mansion Series *Amaterasu - Okami *Sif - Dark Souls
My suggestion would be Shadow the female wolf/malamute hybrid from the Dead to Rights series especially since the prequel Dead to Rights: Retribution finally added sections where you can play as her along with giving her use outside of combat by sniffing out clues and retrieving items that Jack needs but can't reach along with explaining how Jack first met her. And she still keeps what made her a mainstay in the series that being able to attack a criminal on command. Though I still feel sorry for the criminals somewhat because when Jack says either "Sic em" or "Shadow takedown" that results in some criminal screaming due to both terror and pain due to Shadow turning said criminal into her new chew toy and said criminal now either dead or in a near-death state thanks to Shadow brutally mauling said criminal. Oh yeah and in the sections of DTR: Retribution where you play as Shadow she puts her police dog training to good use besides retrieving useful items for Jack she's also capable of luring enemies into mauling range by barking, or she can sneak-up on an unsuspecting enemy and literally pounce on the unsuspecting criminal and go straight into turning said unsuspecting enemy into her new chew toy.
@@pengie-gw2lu Yeah. Ever since I discovered about it back in 2009 I try really hard for people to go and check it out. It's great, it pays off with every arc and the battles are top tier. I really wish it was animated.
@@Erick7Greenday Seriously. I think the part of it I like the most is how creative the trainers get while battling. String Shot as a shield, Vine Whip as a lightningrod, Snorlax's skydiving Double Edge... There's so many awesome moments of trainers actually using their heads instead of just calling out powerful moves and strategies ripped from the games like the anime does.
@@pengie-gw2lu Flying Blastoise through hydropump? Posing-as-an-arm transformed Ditto? Specials have brought up amazing concepts that I tend to use while playing Tabletop United, aside from enjoying those moves being used.
I've been playing a lot of Monster-Taming RPGs lately and so far my favourites are the original Digimon World and Monster Hunter Stories. DW's protagonist could be said to be on par with a Pokemon trainer in terms of fight involvement, and he's limited to only having one Mon at a time, but what I think sets it apart is the emphasis on raising and caring for the Digimon. It makes the whole game feel more intimate and personal overall, and it's super rewarding to evolve a creature all the way up from a bubble-blowing baby slime to a nuclear cyborg dinosaur. As for MHS, the player is a lot more active in the fights which is great, and every monster is rideable which is awesome. This means there's a lot of diversity in how they help you traverse the overworld. I'm especially fond of soaring through the sky on the back of a Rathalos. When I tried playing a mainline MH game the act of hunting monsters which weren't actively threatening anyone turned me off but doing so with a monster companion as well as the more cartoony aesthetic made it a lot more palatable. It just goes to show that animal cruelty is more fun when it's done with a friend.
The Riders from Monster Hunter Stories really deserve AT LEAST an honorable mention. They're fighting alongside their Monsties all the time, and get even stronger when they mount them- ESPECIALLY with their Kinship Attacks, some of the most LUDICROUS human-monster tag-team attacks I've ever SEEN.

Idea: necromancers.
Sure it's usually considered evil, but it's not like these lists are all heroes (or even all playable characters).
I wonder if Marona would count...
Then again, I never hear anyone talk about Phantom Brave.
Nice list, Oscar!
I foresee some pain coming up in the next one...
From a guy who's League ign is Beastmaster VIII I already know Imma love this video.
Isn't it canonical that Ethan/Lyra manage to defeat red tho ?
And with that you’ve conquered all the fate classes (barring stuff like ruler or avenger)
Thank you
SkullytheKidd01 huh?
@@vinesickle3383 sorry, it's just that I've always wondered what the name of a plant user for a long time and it has been killing me.
SkullytheKidd01 oh well no problem.
I think the next Weapons Month was a Patreon Milestone?
Here's my honorable mention:
Arietta (Tales of the Abyss)
Sora and Riku (Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance) . . . maybe.
Noel and Sarah (Final Fantasy XIII-2)
insect glaive hunter(monster hunter)
duke of flies(the binding of isaac)
The AntAgonizer(fallout 3)
I know that we could probably add a bug type user from Pokemon :)
Honorable Mention: Cynthia from Pokémon. Commands a fighting jackal, poisonous flora fauna, siren, a GHOST, a giant slug, a fae creature, and a F***ING LAND SHARK
wait number four had the bullet that killed his dad turned into his sword? that must have bing one big bullet
Video game dancers. Usually dancing is a way to show emotion but can be used as a weapon for experienced fighters. Usually, characters who uses this style are portrayed as wild, like Majima from the Yakuza series.
Ether Shanta or Ulala from Space Channel 5 would win
Either Miror B. or Oricorio could make the list as well
Animal lovers and their badass buddies. Thanks for introducing me to some of these characters, I love them all now.
I hope we see more of her - I mean, them - in Breath of the Wild 2.
if you were to make a top ten dogs, knowing you, missile from ghost trick would be pretty high on that list. and i would not judge you
I'd add Shadow from the Dead to Rights series to that list not only is Shadow in the thick of the fight against the criminals plaguing Grant City alongside adopted human brother/police partner Jack, but in Dead to Rights: Retribution Shadow was made playable and revealed Shadow can do useful things like sniff out clues, and retrieve items that Jack needs, and of course the popular Timber Wolf/Alaskan Malamute Hybrid does what made it a fan-favorite in the first place turn criminals into living doggy treats/chew toys on Jack's command, plus DTR: Retribution's Shadow sections it's revealed that Shadow is smart enough to lure enemies in closer for a stealth mauling via barking.
Love your lists as always! Next countdown, maybe Top 10 Aliens in Video Games?
I feel V from Devil May Cry would have fit here well, but you’ve got some pretty cool choices!
Solid list as usual Green Scorpion. I'm looking forward to next time.
Oh my God, someone actually cares about Far Cry Primal! I thought I was alone in this universe!
Ok no you gotta do summoners. Gotta give V and Akira Howard some love
I like how your Hound Master segment is entirely comprised of footage from Comic’s lp

Bit of a missed opportunity for the editor to put in a picture of Valor with some sunglasses on for the "Deal with it" part. xD
Swarm Masters is up next, and I've got some suggestions.
*The Pain - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
*D'vorah - Mortal Kombat X and 11
*Margurite Baker - Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
*Aaron - Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum
And...
*Q. Bee - Darkstalkers
I would have added Oscar from Ni no Kuni. The creatures he can tame come ridiculously powerful
Oscar isn't the one who tames them
Do you guys mean Oliver? I don't remember the Ni No Kuni games having a guy named "Oscar".
24:45 Mentioning Spectrobes and Fossil Fighters? Respect
Pikmin are more plant-like than animals, which I'm assuming was the main criteria for this list. Olimar might make it into Swarm Masters, though.
These fighters got the eye of the tiger and many other animal parts.
Did anyone else notice Rexxar's intro line is a line from that 80s song "Hungry like a wolf?"
Rexxar's pelt may also be a reference to Black Wolf (or as I call him Barbarian Batman) from Ralph Bakshi's Fire & Ice.
Love these top tens :) wish you could make em every week. I know that's not possible with day job and life though.
If your dogs list does not have the SEES pupper at #1, then you deserve an extended stay in the dark hour without that coffin!
I knew Maria would make it, it would be a crime not to add her
Patiently waiting for a monster hunter list despite not having a patreon.
YAHOOOO!!!! My idea came to fruition!!!!!
Yes the countdown I was silently asking for!
It's not a beastmaster list without pokemon. Now to try to find out the next countdown
Im not sure if this guy counts, but Stranger from strangers wrath ( a spinoff of abes oddworld) uses small critters and uses them as ammo on his crossbow to bounty enemies.

And a more recent entry, Lanshi from Indivisible. He's definetelly one of the more unique Incarnations in the game.
Dogmeat - The Fallout series
Repede - Tales of Vesperia (must be number 1!)
I only knew about Spectrobes' existence because a trailer of it was in the Bolt DS game
>Pokemon Trainers require little interaction during battles.
Oh boy, go read the Specials manga.
That manga really is underrated. I wish more people knew about it.
And then there’s the Diamond and Pearl manga where the main trainer actually fights alongside his Pokémon!
