As a musician, I can tell you that the real genius in his music is the simplicity. Really cool riffs, memorable melodies. And then the band enhances it and pulls it all together
It was the 1970s in Florida, being young and doing what we do, and suddenly there were The Heartbreakers! They looked like us, they sounded like us, and music would never be the same. Tom Petty had that special something that made him a man of the people, at the beginning, in the middle, at the end. Florida's famous son, we embrace you for always. (You belong among the wildflowers)
my heart suffered a slice when we lost Mr. Petty, never forget where I was standing, I had to sit , same as when SRV and Mr. PEART, don't mind admitting I wept
Thanks Tom, this is truly the end of an era, with Rush retiring, and Petty passing, the last touring arena rockers who rode the FM waves into the pages of history have left a quiet stage. But the memories are real, and can take us to another time and place. So glad to have grown up with this great thing called rock and roll.
Matthew Mcdaniel ....we still have a few flickering embers before the fire is totally out. The Moody Blues, Alice Cooper, Bruce and Billy, ZZ.... among others are still out there keeping us warm. YOU DONT KNOW HOW IT FEELS....TO BE ME. RIP YOU REBEL
clubdoc I am finding some good pure music in a few young traditional country artist, just like the song old hippie, listens to country music because pop rock left him cold
There is a long list in this category. It sounds cliche, but the radio hits were not the best songs, at all. Not that the radio hits were bad songs, far from it, but the best stuff was always just below the surface, right up to and including the last album.
I would have cried my eyes out while singing along to this if I was at that concert. One of my all time fav songs by tom petty and the heart breakers! Ahhhhhhh
This is one of my very favs of Toms wow it brings back good memories in that time of my life. Thankful for his music contributions. Forever missed ....
Tom's words hit home to all people. We all laugh, cry, bleed and have joy and loss in life. Tom and the boys were able to bottle up 3 minutes of pure truth over and over again. No filler, no crap. Honest universal interpretations of life. I am grateful to have found my life therapist 45 years ago.
Sad he didn't get the recognition for being one of the Greatest in my book. And as far as awards goes! Some bands have good songs and bad songs…. Have your ever hear a bad Tom Petty song?
This is one of my favorite Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, songs, and they make it sound brand new, every time they play it live. This was recorded 3 years before Tom Petty's tragic and untimely death.
Fir me this has got to be one of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers greatest and sharpest commercial songs the music is very mature, it has that great solid rock sound the lyrics are very mature I think these guys were really young when they wrote this song because this was an 80’s song. You almost know it’s going to be a great song when any great, great rock band starts a song out with a powerful, passionate piano player like Benmont Tench the 3rd and then Mike Campbell ‘s fantastic and unbelievable guitar sound that really carries this song you know it’s going to be a special song. I almost think this song was a head of its time.💁♀️🙄☝️🧚🏻♂️🎸
Mike Campbell's guitar cuts straight to your heart. I cannot listen without furrowing my brow a la Jack Black and just bouncing my head along, in disbelief that a song can be driven that hard!!! Play that thing...
Lovely to hear Tom introducing all those Brilliant Musicians, who have been around him, and his Band for SO many Years, and this is a fantastic track indeed. Just SO sad to know that he will be not e around any more....R.I.P.....Tom Petty.....
What a huge loss for the music industry. I’ve never heard a song by Tom Petty that I didn’t like. I wonder if this was about his ex? I still can’t believe he only had one week left after their last concert. I just hope he didn’t suffer. RIP, one of a very few Legends of REAL Rock and Roll. The crap called music today will never be as good as Classic Rock and Roll 🎸. Petty was one of the BEST. 😢
Cynthia King I heard it was him. He had illicit fentanyl in his system. He did his last concert with a broken hip. He’d HAVE TO be on something strong to pull that off.
I’d agree except he wrote that song in the early 80’s. I just finished yesterday the book conversations with Tom Petty, he talks about his songs and it’s so good. But yeah, he was on some really strong drugs at the end, and from what I understand Fentanyl is nothing to play around with. I just loved his music. They were musicians. Now days it’s auto tuned and samples. I hope somewhere in some garage a bunch of kids are deciding to start a band.
One of TPs most underrated songs...the piano, the beat, the guitar...a pure GEM...RIP to one of the best. For time trip, check the footage of this live from 1982 US festival.
Sure do miss this ol florida boy, been a fan of Tom since I bought 'Damn the torpedoes' back in 1980, R I P you will always be missed and your music will always be heard
My personal favorite of Tom's and the band. I really feel bad for his family Mike Campbell and the rest of the band and I hope somewhere along his journey he made peace with Stan. God Bless Tom Petty and RIP and jam with those who arrived before you got there.
Three years later, but Stan reportedly gave Mike the orange and green Gator guitar for the Gainesville concert in 2006. Stan and Benmont are still friends, to this day.
ds ago I miss Tom. Despite his success, he was the most humble individuual. I saw about 30 of his concerts (California, New York - Beacon, MSG, Jones Beach). I saw him aged but always give him the best he was able to. RIP.
Saw them at the Summit in Houston in 87 or 88 great show and great friends man what a party thanks for the music TP and the Heart breakers rock in peace brother you are missed
Forget the gaffe below; so brilliant that Tom started introducing the band late in their touring history; I know he was profoundly shy outside of his music with big crowds but this was such a laid back and yet enthusiastic tour for the album ... 3 yrs later he killed himself for his audience and you can't make someone less of a hero if they are going to fall on their sword but wtf was he thinking in 2017 with a hip fracture..... but that was Tom Petty. He is up there somewhere with his dog.
@evelyn baron I knew he loved dogs....he must have had a few at least, ...in one of his last interviews, during the 40th Anniversary tour, he said he just wanted " to rest and stay home with (his) wife and dog" when the tour was over. Was one of his dogs the German Shepherd in the Wildflowers video? There's also a video I just saw recently of his last interview the day after he got home from the 40th Anniversary Tour. It was in his home. It was just audio but you could hear him moving around....was a small room with just about a dozen guitars. It was a good interview and in it he said he knew he needed hip surgery. So sad.
Damn. I never get tired of reliving this epic night! I am over 225k views. We miss you so much Tom! Search clubdoc/tom petty for many more of my TP&HB vidz!
My favorite as well. Been listening to Petty and the Heartbreaker forever... 1981 or ‘82? Forever ago. It breaks my heart that he’s not here any longer. I’m still torn up about him.
I revisit this video every now and then and take pause. Thanks for all you gave me over the years. Yours was not a Broken Promise. Miss seeing you bro.

THAT's the attitude to take right now; he's been gone for 2 years in a few days; time to celebrate his life and works together. I am mindful that he had a special relationship through his music with everyone of us through the years .. or even recently, like being electrocuted and living to tell the tale as a friend of mine put it; this anniversary coming up Oct 2 of his death, cry, be sad, but be HAPPY he was in the world and taught us all how to Learn to Fly.
Benmont's solo piano lifts to the heavens & the song's lyrics speak of a love that isn't returned. Mike's guitar forces the high notes dramatically but not so much the melody can't be heard. And, there's always Tom's voice keeping the song steady but, sharing the emotion. This song is a Masterpiece💘🎩🌟💘
I HAD A REALLY HARD TIME WITH HIS DEATH ALTHOUGH ONLY SEEING HIM TWICE 1979 AUGUSTA MAINE WITH TOMMY TUTONE AND YEARS LATER 2013 FENWAY WITH STEVE WINWOOD I FELT THAT I HAD KNOWN HIM A VERY LONG TIME A FRIENDSHIP IVE NEVER MET ANYONE EVER THAT HAS EVER DISLIKED THIS MAN...PEACE BROTHER..
Grew up with TP but obviously they are NOT a good live band. But excellent studio....
Prepare for much criticism for this stupid post. Obviously, you have your ass for headphones and your eyes see only what's up inside your ass.
Makes me wonder if you every ever saw him live to make such a dumb comment.
Your comment is meaningless.

So grateful now that TH-cam has so many videos of our Tom Petty!
supergolfdude Isn’t it fabulous? They have nearly everything.
Our gallant troubadour 🌄!
The piano intro is just perfect.
I gave her everything....she threw it all away on nothing...
I love love love listening to this whole band, but especially Mike Campbell's guitar...he's a magician!
The two best live guitar tones I have ever heard were Mike Campbell…and the guitarist from Stone Temple Pilots, believe it or not.
Thanks Tom, this is truly the end of an era, with Rush retiring, and Petty passing, the last touring arena rockers who rode the FM waves into the pages of history have left a quiet stage. Watching this footage has given me a feeling of sadness. RIP Tom.
Tom & his crew always were a top notch Class Act! I love watching the Heartbreakers do what they did so very well! Forever missed!
Anyone that’s felt pain of a breakup, knows this feeling……..the chills this song instills, heals, in time
Still can't believe he's gone.
Music as we know it will never be the same without Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!!!!!!

Love the piano at the start of the song.
Suzie McMurray I always wish they'd had that intro on the original recording!
Shroeder IS AMAZING!
Check on the version on the Live Anthology album.
Benmont Tench lll, on piano. None better, IMHO! Thank you TP&HB.
Onthe Fenway Park video, Benmont’s playing the intro, then the guitars kick in.
The crowd starts screaming, and, Benmont smiles to himself.😍
It sounds as good live as on record. Rest in peace Tom petty, you left your mark for many to always remember you
