It was the 1970s in Florida, being young and doing what we do, and suddenly there were The Heartbreakers! They looked like us, they sounded like us, and music would never be the same. Tom Petty had that special something that made him a man of the people, at the beginning, in the middle, at the end. Florida's famous son, we embrace you for always. As a musician, I can tell you that the real genius in his music is the simplicity. Really cool riffs, memorable melodies. And then the band enhances it and pulls it all together

Thanks Tom, this is truly the end of an era, with Rush retiring, and Petty passing, the last touring arena rockers who rode the FM waves into the pages of history have left a quiet stage. But the memories are real, and can take us to another time and place. So glad to have grown up with this great thing called rock and roll.

There is a long list in this category. It sounds cliche, but the radio hits were not the best songs, at all. Not that the radio hits were bad songs, far from it, but the best stuff was always just below the surface, right up to and including the last album.

I still can’t believe he only had one week left after their last concert. I just hope he didn’t suffer. RIP, one of a very few Legends of REAL Rock and Roll. The crap called music today will never be as good as Classic Rock and Roll 🎸. Petty was one of the BEST. 😢

Cynthia King I heard it was him. He had illicit fentanyl in his system. He did his last concert with a broken hip. He’d HAVE TO be on something strong to pull that off.
I’d agree except he wrote that song in the early 80’s. I just finished yesterday the book conversations with Tom Petty, he talks about his songs and it’s so good. But yeah, he was on some really strong drugs at the end, and from what I understand Fentanyl is nothing to play around with. I just loved his music. They were musicians. Now days it’s auto tuned and samples. I hope somewhere in some garage a bunch of kids are deciding to start a band.

Tom's words hit home to all people. We all laugh, cry, bleed and have joy and loss in life. Tom and the boys were able to bottle up 3 minutes of pure truth over and over again. No filler, no crap. Honest universal interpretations of life. I am grateful to have found my life therapist 45 years ago.
Tom's lyrics are so good. In this instance, they are devastating. I love this song. You were one of my favorites. RIP.

Fir me this has got to be one of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers greatest and sharpest commercial songs the music is very mature, it has that great solid rock sound the lyrics are very mature I think these guys were really young when they wrote this song because this was an 80’s song. You almost know it’s going to be a great song when any great, great rock band starts a song out with a powerful, passionate piano player like Benmont Tench the 3rd and then Mike Campbell ‘s fantastic and unbelievable guitar sound that really carries this song you know it’s going to be a special song. I almost think this song was a head of its time.💁♀️🙄☝️🧚🏻♂️🎸

I miss Tom. Despite his success, he was the most humble individuual. I saw about 30 of his concerts (California, New York - Beacon, MSG, Jones Beach). I saw him aged but always give him the best he was able to. RIP.

My personal favorite of Tom's and the band. I really feel bad for his family Mike Campbell and the rest of the band and I hope somewhere along his journey he made peace with Stan. God Bless Tom Petty and RIP and jam with those who arrived before you got there.
Maybe he, Gregg Allman and Glenn Fry put on a super concert and rocked my dad !!
Three years later, but Stan reportedly gave Mike the orange and green Gator guitar for the Gainesville concert in 2006.
Stan and Benmont are still friends, to this day.
