  • This video shows some of the interesting effects of RADIATION on BREAST RECONSTRUCTION. I realize the analysis of these changes can seem pretty ridiculous, especially given a breast cancer diagnosis. My line of work is analyzing how bodies move and function so it’s normal for me to look at the body this way!

    I’ve just recently found your channel. Some days I am so motivated and can watch the videos and some days my stomach drops and I want to pretend none of this ever happened. Just wanted to say thank you for your first hand knowledge and support to the rest of us. My surgeon didn’t recommend PT as early as I should’ve done it. Now I’m undoing the damage I’ve done by trying to protect my chest and not moving a lot. My muscles are so locked up.

      It’s quite the roller coaster isn’t it!? So many ups and downs along the way. It’s definitely frustrating when you’re not given the recommendation for PT after surgery. There’s lots of movement related videos on this channel to help.

    I have the same tightness, but didn't have radiation. I had expanders and reconstruction surgery. I'm more tight on the cancer side. I still have swelling and numbness. Mastectomy surgery was April, reconstruction was August...both this year. Love your videos!

      Thanks for sharing! Interesting that you have a difference in tension side to side when you didn't have radiation - maybe due to lymph nodes being removed, cording, etc on the cancer side. Wishing you well with your recovery.

      Thanks so much for your response! Yes, the cancer side had lymph node removal. I've had swelling and a little cording where the drains were. I had 2 drains on each side, but again, the cancer side was different. Thanks again! ❤

    Thanks so much for your informative videos. I have gone through a similar journey. I had my exchange surgery a week ago. I had radiation fibrosis and my radiated breast was hard and a lot higher on my chest. It seems to sit lower now and a bit more even with the other breast. I’m still not ready mentally to analyze my results. I’ll continue visiting your channel. Thank you!

    The Graston technique would probably help much with this.

      You made it through such a big step already completing surgery! You can ease into radiation knowing the procedure isn't painful. You'll deal with any side effects as they arise. Ask your treatment team about what they recommend for skin care and check out my radiation videos if you haven't already.

    I will be having an immediate reconstruction with my mastectomy. The surgeon will be using a type of mesh, I think it’s called an Acellular Dermal Sheeting made from sheep gut, That adheres to the tissue acting like an ‘ inside bra’ preventing capsular contracture if radiation is needed later.

      That’s great that you’re able to go straight to implant.

    Im having my mastectomy next Wednesday and will be getting expanders due to needing radiation after. My radiation doctor mentioned to me that if I choose implants more than likely they will shift as the years go by. This only happens with implants and not Diep surgery he said.

    • @breast-cancer-rehab
      @breast-cancer-rehab  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, my surgeon said my implants will fall slightly over time too. The radiated side may fall some but not much. I don’t know enough about the results with a DIEP to make a comparison.

    • @DrWaiYeeLiPlasticSurgeon
      @DrWaiYeeLiPlasticSurgeon หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is very little difference between placing implant vs TE prior to radiation. Both are at risk of capsular contraction (Going hard). Autologous reconstruction, using your own tissue (latissimus or DIEP flaps) can also get quite hard after radiation, but usually less. This is why many plastic surgeons (like me) prefer doing delayed autologous. In some cases, I am comfortable to place the implant at the time of mastectomy (immediate direct to implant, DTI) prior to radiation, but recommend prepectoral (in front of pectoral's major muscle) as oppose to sub pectoral (under the muscle). If patient gets radiation-induced capsular contracture, I wait a year and then perform autologous reconstruction. TE have a lot more disadvantages to implants; you have to come back for expansion, usually weekly, tissue expanders can get flipped (meaning you can't access the fill port) and expansion itself can be uncomfortable.. I could go on.. but in future I will post a video on this.

      Dr. Li - I’m curious what your protocols/restrictions are for exercise post-surgery. This would obviously depend on the surgery.

    • @DrWaiYeeLiPlasticSurgeon
      @DrWaiYeeLiPlasticSurgeon หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@breast-cancer-rehab It depends on whether my patient is getting an 'easier surgery' like a implant revision vs a brand new mastectomy, direct-to-implant or a flap case. Most patient meet with OT prior to surgery and given a booklet with phased exercises. If patients have drains, I usually wait till drains out 1 week before starting phase 2 exercises. Easy revisions, back to normal after 2-3 weeks. Mastectomy + reconstruction, no lifting > 5 pounds 6-8 weeks, no driving same period. I am very conservative. But my seroma rates are very low :)

    Hello, is your chording gone now? I'm a male and after a heavy lifting session I got chording on my left side. I think its safe to say chording not only happens to women after surgery but from the trauma on the surrounding tissue.first day my hand felt really tight. If I even tried hanging from a pull up bar my arm felt like it was going to tare off. A week later today I can hang from a pull up bar with some pain and discomfort but I can do it and it's bareable. I tried a pull up and noticed my arm only feels tight when I reach the lowest point in the pull up. I'm just wondering how long this is going to take to heal. Thank you for your stretching videos and PT videos!

    • @breast-cancer-rehab
      @breast-cancer-rehab  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You didn’t mention if this was breast cancer related after surgery (it’s not as common but men can get BC too). I still have visible cording but the tension that’s associated with it has improved over time. Hanging from a bar or anytime your arm is fully stretched out is when the tension on the cord is at its most. I’m going to post a video on bar hanging this week so watch out for that.

      @@breast-cancer-rehab Hello, yeah no mine wasn't due to surgery. It was just the trauma from overexcertion. I vaguely remember dealing with this injury in my initial fitness journey but never did any PT for it. It just kinda completely went away on its own. I might just be prone to it now if not careful. I'm hoping to recover soon.

    Erica, hello. Love your videos. They are so helpful.
    Have a weird, random question.
    What brand of sports bra is that pink one you are wearing in the video? (You have it on in the part where you are raising your arm straight up and bringing it to your ear.)
    I like it bc it looks like it extends down on your torso.
    Still trying to find a bra/sports bra that is comfortable.
    Thank you so much.
