Geraint Thomas Crashes but Gets Up to DEFEND INEOS GC | Critérium du Dauphiné Stage 8 2021

  • Criterium du Dauphine Stage 8 was mayhem last year and would have brought back bad memories for Richie Porte after losing the yellow jersey in this race to Fuglsang in the last stage back in 2017. INEOS had the strongest team to defend that jersey, with Geraint Thomas presumably to work for Porte, but a technical descent finish and Haig with Padun as a satellite rider, set the scene for a difficult last 30km for Porte.
Lanterne Rouge presents highlights of Stage 8 of Critérium du Dauphiné 2021.

That will be fascinating. The occasional ‘individual rider analysis’, winner or not, will be a nice variation on your coverage. The added value (of the podcast especially) is in the insightful analysis, not merely the description, of a stage. I bet most know viewers and listeners know the actual results already via Eurosport/GCN+ etc. Keep it rolling!

He has a slew of TT national titles at various age categories. So, he might not have any TT wins at the highest level but that might just be that until now he and TBV haven’t made it a priority.

Froome dropped him on the last descent only to blow up on the final climb and watch Richie sail past him. It's a shame Richie crashed out so badly in the Tour De France that year as he was in career best form.

Thomas crashes too much but not always his fault - think he may have been distracted by Porte being a bit behind and wondering whether he should cover the three ahead. He has had Giro crashes due to a police rider and a water bottle and Barguil took him out in 2015 TDF on the corner and rode him into a telegraph pole and over the edge. The Romandy sprint finish crash was all his own work though - when he won the Tour he was perfect though!
He looks very close to his 2018 form and better than he was in 2019 when second. I think he could have won Dauphine but he was happy for Porte to win after his previous frustrations in the knowledge that Porte will pay him back in the tour. There is little between them but Porte - superb rider though he is - usually has an off day or bad luck in a three week tour. 2020 was the odd one out.
Tao looked good too in Dauphine considering how much work he did and is now in better form than when he won Giro. Carapaz looked great in Swiss Tour TT today.
Thomas could have been a lot closer to Bernal than he was in 2020 TDF but he obviously was under orders not to follow once Bernal attacked and am worried same thing could happen in Tour as Carapaz has a tendency to put big efforts in on the mountains.
I think the extra TT’s this year puts Thomas as marginal leader though it could change. Guessing eight at Tour will be Thomas, Carapaz, Tao, Porte, Kwiato, Dennis, Rowe and probably Van Baarle or De Plus or even Sivakov.
which I think gives them edge over Jumbo with no Dumoulin and a slightly off form Kuss though Van Aert is worth 3 riders.

Fireworks on Saturday; fizzled on Sunday. Well, sometimes that’s how it pans out. Some stages are more crucial than others despite the small cumulative time differences entering final stage. Individual performances and team decision vagaries mark the day. Kudos to Thomas bringing it home in tandem with Porte.

Yeah, I don't get Richie Porte's comments about TDF. He seemed clearly in better form than G, not just in the mountains but also in the time trial. G's not quite there. Seems to be a bit on the back foot sometimes, and is having too many mishaps. Assuming Porte maintains his form, I hope Ineos works mainly for him in the TDF and shares that championship wealth. Surprise, surprise, considering Porte returned to the team primarily to be a domestique, a super one at that though!
