Eyes are never round, do not be afraid of darks, do not do lipstick lips, do not use black or blue they do not do the job, people start blending too early, if you see 100 paint 10. So much valuable advice! Dear Ben, I am very grateful to watch you and learn your lessons.
How kind and generous of you to share your knowledge and amazing talent with the rest of the world. You have done some incredible reductionist work on the craft of painting while at the same time enhancing the artistic magic of the whole experience. I am grateful for every step you have talked us through, but in particular the use of the Gesso, the white spirit, the type/colours of paints and brushes and not least the gel and the subtlety of it uses - the hardware that underpins the personal marks of a painting. Sincere and grateful thanks. You have made me want to paint again!
This is probably one of the best videos I’ve watched so far. Really breaking it down and showing the process, especially showing your palette as you mix the colors and showing compared to the reference is soooo helpful. Really helps you learn how to get started.
This is a fantastic lesson, a wonderful video tutorial about your method! Thank you so much for leting us learn from your Art with such Great Generosity! God bless you Ben!
thank you Ben Lustenhouwer for your portrait painting videos. So valuable to watch an expert painter create a portrait and explain which cool shades go where and which warm shades go where. The last time I had the chance it was Daniel Green's workshop and he passed away last year.
Great painting tutorial! What interest me most in your painting videos is how you show your color pallette. That's why I watch them all the time. Thank you so much for sharing this awesome painting knowledge. I was wondering how it was going to turn out and it turned out so great. Beautiful painting style 👌.
So happy to see you back. Your videos are the reason I took on the challenge to paint portraits, using your color combinations which I would not have used if not for your teachings. Thank you so much
You are an amazing teacher… I’m painting a self portrait currently in art school and was so valuable to me.. cherish it and watch maybe three more times be fore a get back to work over my under painting… 😅
hi my name is Claudine Vega I have very little formal training I was so happy to see I paint so much like you. I am becoming a fairly good portrait painter - I was wondering if I missed the boat but you have inspired me thank you
A truly beautiful little girl and amazing portrait, you have such a simple way of explain your processes. Many thanks for sharing I may try to paint my grandsons after this inspiring video.
i'm 13, and just started oil painting. i knew my great grandad loved it so i really want to get good at it but its proving to be quite tough so thank you so much for this tutorial, i loved every minute.
Mr Lustenhouwer you are an absolute breath of fresh air to listen to. I just love your approach and how you tackle your work. I enjoy listening, watching and i watch all your videos from start to finish. To be honest some other art/youtubers i watch i cant help myself but "fast forward" but you have so much to give when you paint and explain... you are a fabulous teacher and i am always excited to watch your stuff! thank you for the lovely video and your excellent commentary (you always give me a little laugh too lol)
So kind of you to post these wonderful tutorials for portrait painting. Wish I could spend days in the studio with you at my side. Beautiful portrait of your granddaughter. Thank you.
I have watched both this and your other full video several times now. I have gained and put into practice some gems that have helped so much. I studied painting with Max Ginsburg…Another brilliant teacher. I am a portrait painter as well. I am so grateful for your efforts and the time you have taken to create these videos.
What a lovely tutorial! I'm very timid when it comes to using my real art supplies. Digital art is much more forgiving, and cheaper to produce. I can't wait to try your techniques on a real canvas. Thank you!! 🥰
"pranam",,, 🙏🙏means -I touch your feets . I learn many things from your videos,,,, many many many thanks for sharing,,, you are a great teacher,,,, Love and respect from INDIA.
So beautiful 😍 I wish I could have your talents in the painting 🖼 world 🌎 I dream about a Gallery in my future. You have been so helpful and very informative and very inspiring. Thank you so much 💓 for your time and for helping us out on to do something amazing. Sincerely Marta
Thank you once more for yet another insightfull tutorial! It would be great to see tips and techniques on the glazing technique over a grisaille, such as the old masters did. BTW, please do send a small video every now and then so we don't worry if it takes too much time between producing your tutorials!
@@lustenhouwerI understand what you say. However, I am sure you will be able to suggest ways and theory, even as an exercise based on your knowledge of your painting means! I have been recently starting portraits ala prima with the zorn palet instead of grissaile and finishing them with extensive glazing. However the theory available on the net is indeed limited and not thorough. I not even sure I can find a tutor in Athens on the subject. So many basic questions and there are no available answers. I.e. what if I want to paint something in green by composing yellow and blue layers. Is there a rule such as dark over light, the inverse or alternating them in multiple passes. What says the theory on the 3 options above? With limited time to paint experimenting is a luxury and yes I know what you said about practice and there is no short cut to mastery! Thank you for your answer and for caring to help us become better. I have benefited a great deal from you on my painting.
I love this!! So hard! Did you let the varnish dry before you put in the glaze/washes? You make it all so easy to understand the steps, I can’t wait to try, thanks so much- so beautiful!

I do what I can Christos. The grisaille technique I don't know I am afraid.

Is there a reason why you have 2 paints from winsor newton and the others from talens rembrandt?
Not really. I just like them more than the ones of the other brand.
Hello sir! I have a question, do we need to use turps while painting the face thank you! Another question how long should we leave the canvas after painting the hase of the face.?
Try not to use any medium in the beginning. Only for toning.
What kind of red pencil did you use?
Just a normal red pencil, but not a water dilutable one because it might be washed away.
