    Actually, at least from what I've seen, they tend to use them to melt ice off of frozen track switches more than to clear the actual tracks. The track clearing is generally done by more conventional methods such as V-plows and snowblowers.
    I've seen videos of them in use in my area, although I have yet to see it in person - hopefully someday!

    I would think the biggest problem is the ungodly noise from those turbines

      Yeah, they're actually quite noisy. The engines produce 140 dB of noise, which is loud.
