    I was really hoping you'd look back at the ground you'd been walking on, or at doorknobs / surfaces you touched. I got a chance a few years ago to do a search & rescue training exercise with the local SES group with a much older thermal camera. Myself and a few others took off into some fairly dense scrub / forest and the SES crew tracked us down with their camera. It was amazing to see footsteps and handprints on trees we had left even hours before show up clear as day in infrared.

    You can get other brands with similar sized sensor for much less, yes. But like everything, I guess it comes down to the small things? As always, if you don't like the price, buy another band, that's how competition works.

    You must be a very persuasive guy, Dave to walk out of their shop with one of those beauties. But then again, it comes back to you when you give. I may not have the money for a flir but I just bought a multi off trio. Good on you guys. It was interesting to see the responses from the environment. Easy to see why cities are hotter at night with the heat given off from all the concrete.

    Dave: the visible light camera on the E-series units actually can see the laser dot and show on the screen the exact point where the laser dot coincides with the thermal image.

    Well... After 9 months I finally pulled the trigger and bought the E60 with MSX which is the newer generation.
    Thank you so much for this review, I've watched it several times and just decided to stop putting it off.

    The "freezing" is normal. It's a calibration step.
    It closes a shutter and compares the temperature of the shutter measured by the microbolometer with the temperature measured by a thermocouple or something like that.

    Hey Dave! I'm not sure how much longer you will have access to this awesome device at your home, but I would love to see a shot of your car's engine actually running. Even better if it could be rev'd up and down to see the temperature actively changing.
    Thanks for the neat video.

    This camera has a touchscreen btw. And another very important setting is the emission coefficient... the shown temperature reading in default is valid for black bodies only.

    Cool video. Thanks, Dave!
    We have an E60 that we mostly use for thermal design. We are building a cutting-edge humanoid robot and squeezing all the power electronics inside a human-sized system is difficult-enough.
    When you add to that all the heat dissipation of the motor drivers, the motors, the high-end machine vision cameras etc., you quickly realize that there's just no way to do it without a thermal camera. I used to put my fingers on the critical components, to check for overheating. I got tired of burning my fingertips, *really quickly*...
    :)
    We love the E60. Great resolution (for thermal) and very wide temperature range.
    It's really great to be able to pull up the thermal image of a running PCB, next to EAGLE CAD and see exactly which components and PCB traces get hot and where you need to add more exposed copper + thermal vias...

    • @encryptededdy
      @encryptededdy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      lnpilot Open the JPEGs with FLIR Tools and you'll get much better resolution, along with the ability to change temp span, pallet, add measurements etc.
      This is because the FLIR JPEGs have extra metadata that actually stores all of the raw thermal info.

    • @gnagyusa
      @gnagyusa 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edward Zhang Thanks. I figured something sneaky like that was going on! Unfortunately, the FLIR tools don't run on Linux, so those won't work for us.

      I know imagemagick/exiftool has support for FLIR Radiometric JPEGs, not sure how to use it though.

    • @gnagyusa
      @gnagyusa 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edward Zhang Thanks. I'll check it out! I actually have my own image manipulation library with a large set of tools, scripting capability etc., so one of these days, I'll just have to dig into the FLIR JPEG format and add support for it...
      Thanks for letting me know about the format. Now I know what to look for!

    • @gnagyusa
      @gnagyusa 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edward Zhang I just added rudimentary support for reading FLIR radiometric JPEGs to my image library. I get 16-bit lossless images now. No more crappy JPEG artifacts and the camera overlay GUI is gone, so I can see the sensor data better.
      Pretty cool!
      This thread was very helpful:
      u88.n24.queensu.ca/exiftool/forum/index.php?topic=4898.0
      There are some weird issues though. At certain points in the pixel data, you have to skip 12 bytes in the input, for no good reason.
      Seems like a sensor-reading artifact. Not sure why FLIR would save it in the JPEG though, unless it's to make it more difficult to read with 3rd party tools...

    Some other interesting things:
    - foot prints on the floor after people walk past or rub their feet
    - hand prints left on things
    - finding ballasts for lighting in the roof
    - your nostrils changing colour as you breathe....

  • @sbreheny
    @sbreheny 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The freezing during calibration is accompanied by a clicking noise. This is an actual shutter closing in front of the sensor. The shutter has temp sensors on it and the sensor takes a picture of the shutter and the processor in the camera uses the known temperature of the shutter to calibrate the sensor. The display freezes during this so it can hide the cal image from the user. I have an E50 and the firmware has some bugs. Taking a photo during freeze gives a nasty error about the memory card.

    I sort of agree with you there you can buy an FLIR i3 for 1150 here in the states and and E30 for 2900. However you have to think about how long this technology has been on the market and the type of market they are selling it to. Ive been watching the prices on these over the past few years and they have dropped dramatically

    I bought one and like it. Have to get used to the setting since it's different from my old camera. Not impressed with FLIR's soft ware. I'm finding it extremely difficult to use and write reports with! I have the Tools+. Also their webinars that have been recorded prior, are put out with a low resolution so you can't really make out what's going on - very disappointing since I just spent about $7000.00 with them.

    i would have loved a brief test of its accuracy.
    Saw a showdown between Flir and Fluke and it was like 25% difference in temp reading from the same relative short like 1 meter distance to the same source..and both of these claim +-2%
    Recall it was the Flike VT02 and Flir E4.
    but this older x0'series or the EX series have a big plus with their manual focus. in regards to the E4, E5, E6, E8
    but one thing I still don't know if Flir handheld thermals are able to, is to lock the span or reference the span so you don't get this blown out effect.. 11:42 here it would have been nice if you could lock the span and then dial it down so the heatsinks details became more visible, and you reference the rangespan to that higher temp, so you get details on certain things that is of interests..
    example. Seek pro fast frame 20hz from 2016 that were like 300 bucks on Ebay so a way different pricesegment.

    When are we going to get 4K resolution thermal cameras with a nice f1.4 lens (with adjustable aperture), and a lens mount capable of handling an anamorphic lens so you don't lose as much detail when going from a 4:3 sensor to a final output of 16:9.
    And to top it all off, they should make sure the sensor can capture 13 stops of dynamic range. That will make the price match more closely with what you would get with a good professional camera.
