Pigments 5 is now part of my arsenal. It's so nice to have different tools for different purposes and colors. different synths can take you to different timbral expressions and tones. what a time to be alive.
I am still not sure if I want to buy it, even for 65 bucks. I own Massive and Massive X because of the Komplete Bundle. I like Massive X soundwise, but the interface was killing me. Even after the tutorials, I still struggled. Let's see...
Thank you for bringing more attention to Pigments!! It is one of the best synths out there and really deserves more recognition that it has been getting!! Much appreciated!
Another big reason to love this amazing soft synth - major updates are regularly coming from Arturia free of charge and more often than any other vst that I can think of
I got a great deal on Pigments when it was on sale since I owned an Arturia keyboard. It was an impulse buy since it was so cheap but it quickly became my favorite all in one synth. I will definitely be interested in the course when it becomes available.
I own Serum, PIgments and Phaseplant. Phaseplant has a really great environment but its a bit of a learning curve which I am still learning. With that said, Pigment is a monster for its price and what it comes with. Arturia have it up to 4.0 now which has tons of presets and options. It has a ARP and a seq. built in too. It does take a lot of CPU. I'd pick Phase plant if it wasnt for the support by Arturia. You cant go wrong with Serum, but it feels outdated compared to both I've mentioned. Best bang for your buck is Pigments.
You're a very impressive and effective communicator. I really appreciate your skill and effort. That's why I'm looking into your course now. I'm SURE it's AT LEAST as great as this video.
I pretty much only use the stock Ableton instruments and Pigments even though I probably have 20 other synths. The interface of Pigments is so nice and it actually has features (step sequencer, granular synthesis) that aren’t as easily done in Ableton.
@@robsutton6469 It can use a lot of cpu in some cases (like granular synthesis or unison with lots of voices) but I haven’t found it to be problematic yet.
Falcon. All the way. But Pigments does have a wonderful UI. That's huge. Admittedly I use Falcon mostly for presets due to complexity of UI. Same with Omni. Pigments is definitely a great UI. I love your channel. So much wonderful information. Thank you.
This video comes just at the right time. I was considering both Pigments and Serum. But with Anthony's testimony and additional content, I might reconsider. Great stuff - as always!
Funny when you listed the synths in the beginning and DIDN'T say pigments... I was like, uh oh... ol' trustworthy Anthony is falling behind the times. Turns out he's still at the forefront of the game. Looking forward to this!
I did a silly thing when I started taking production more seriously in the last 2 years and got a ton softsynths all at once before really learning synthesis basics; Sylenth1, Massive, Massive X, Serum, Vital, Dune 3 and Pigments. Dune 3 and Pigments have been the most inspiring to me. While Dune 3 certainly isn't the best do it all, it sounds simply amazing! Pigments still intimidates me but I know how capable it is. It does seem a bit more CPU hungry than a lot of the other softsynths though. I'm really looking forward to your course on it!
This channel and firewalk (he is fl studio) are the two best, straight to the point and well explained production channels on youtube. I work 15 hour security shifts (15 hours of spare time) so i have watched them all!

I have no issue with this as its true no other synth can do those things and it makes for an amazing experience. Becasue you never mentioned anything about the sound quality and to be honest we are at eh end of the vid and I am still waiting to hear that its your fave because it sounds so good! you like how there are no flat spots with filters or the effects.. so sadly I feel like this was just a "blow smoke up Pigmens ass while selling my wears" :( sadl
Been using pigments since its launch. Every update they've released has been nearly worth the price of entry each time. Everything I learned about sound design in pigments has helped me understand how to use nearly every other synthesizer I own, including my modular.
First synth I bought and had to put it on the back burner cos it’s not a first synth. Came back to it later and I think it is my fav. It has good sounds, FX and u can modulate more things than Serum and pigments
Sometimes I think I love ableton too much and then I hear Anthony say things like "it's the best synthesis system in existence bar none" and I remember that I'm right to love it. I also think it's the best sampling system that exists or has ever existed and it's not even close.
man pigments is more awesome than i thought. phaseplant is crazy too. i love the fx module approach (like in ableton itself) and the macro inception capabillity. multipass is such a beast. to have fx slot into fx slot into multiband fx slot into macro controls inception is mental. but yes it lacks sequenzerwise. but i think it has pros towards internal (and) external fx. everything is a module/plugin, so you can have your fav kilohearts fx on like any source you want. no even better. on any band you want, with multipass, which can be as well used as module/plugin. but pigments is sexy, the modulation looks very powerfull.
I own and love Phase Plant and its Snapin ecosystem. Most but not all Snapins are free, but the paid ones were worth buying to me, as you can create powerful effects chains that can be used separately outside the Phase Plant synth. The synth itself is amazing: you can modulate almost everything, and you can add multiple sound source modules limited only by the power of your CPU. Pigments, which I also own, is only a synth with limited architectural choices compared to Phase Plant, but it has at least two big advantages: it can accept an outside audio source, and it has a built-in arpeggiator. I am hoping that Phase Plant will add these features, but I am not holding my breath. If I could only own one synth, I would choose Pigments.
One thing that stumps me with operator for example is a lack of depth in shaping its envelopes - does anybody have a stock solution to achieve a serum-like envelope and LFO shaping capability? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for giving Arturia some attention! Whether it's a software instrument or hardware instrument, it seems pretty obvious that design choices done by Arturia come from people who both love music and make music themselves.
Man it’s funny you say Pigments because that’s exactly what I was going to say when you were naming a bunch of other VSTs. It’s definitely pigments for me + shoutout to Fors Opal
I would argue, however, that for sound design, Reason may be the better buy. I started out with Reason. Today, I no longer use it as my main DAW, but as a plugin.
The "problem" with stock Live devices is, that the majority of "how to make sound X like artist Y / song Z" tutorials revolve around most popular VST (let's say Serum), as it did with Massive/FM8 in the past. Unfortunately I tend to eat more "educational content" than I actually fool around and learn on my own, so in the end, the bridge to cross gets longer, especially that I try to reproduce those tutorials with already owned software (Vital, Surge etc), which is somewhat counterproductive, as mentioned stock devices lay untouched, and the incentive to grab and master them diminishes in favor of the hype and dopamine hit after I remake a single sound (that I probably won't use anyway) in a third-party software. Because it's faster to copy someone's settings and hope to remember even quarter of logic behind decisions the author have made.
My favorite Do-It -All synth plugin is Analog Lab and always will be...why? The extremely intuitive GUI, the ease of accessing presets, the incorporation of all of Arturia's individual instruments that make up a massive conglomeration of sounds and the seamless & instant layering of any 2 presets from the massive library. It's so insanely easy to create amazing custom presets and no sound design knowledge is required. Personally...I didn't care for Ableton...as I don't like the layout(as I always loved the workflow of Propellerhead Reason.)
I own Arturia’s V collection and Pigments. I love how Analog Lab acts as an all in one preset browser with powerful search capabilities. It is great that you can play presets from instruments that you don’t own.
Yep, the Pigments UI is amazing. First plugin I actually bought - installed the demo and within a few hours I stumped up the money for it. Wasn't the first I installed, either. But interesting comparison to Ableton Live, though. I had Standard for a couple of years before I purchased a Suite upgrade in a deal - and discovered how much I'd been missing out. Ableton does a really poor job of conveying to new users that buying Suite is far far better value than buying Standard and then gradually buying a dozen (or more) plugins. Of course, that said, I will wouldn't give up Pigments. :-)
If your course on Pigments is as good as you other courses, I can only advise each and everyone to go and check it out! Amazing ;-) BTW I do love pigments myself...
Pigments has a fixed architecture. Pigments does not have a wavetable editor. Pigments eats CPU and GPU a times more than Falcon, Serum, Zebra, Phase Plant, Dune, ... . I tried out a bunch of different synths, but Pigments is one of few ones I immediately rejected.
how do you see Dune3 of its usage, in terms of it has some roundy sound, i dont know if it has that snap that cuts trough mix as serum, what u think, at ltast for bass sounds, backround sounds its amazing tho
I got pigments 4 recently.. Loved it, but only if arturia can reduce the load time and CPU consumption of pigments and analog lab I would say it be my number one too.
Ive had Serum for around 8 years, and am just now learning how to make my own sounds instead of just buying using presets. I’ve been wondering about pigments, and if it might be easier to learn than serum. This video, while a bit over my head on some of the vocabulary, makes this a clearer choice. I use Ableton also. I have Bitwig, fl studio and Ableton, but the first two don’t come remotely close to Ableton. So I really believe u when you say pi is better. Thanks for the video!
UVI Falcon is the best all-around for me, Especially WRT sound quality. Pigments sounds thin and weak compared to falcon. Pigments is clearly superior in the simplicity of its UI, but, once you’re used to it, falcon UI is just as capable.
I do love Pigment's UI, although not crazy about the childish "crayon" color scheme. But in the end I just don't think it *sounds* that great... I think they had to sacrifice a bit of quality for flexibility and GUI power. So I don't end up using it. Meanwhile Largo is a much dumber synth, but it's just more inspiring, same as how the Blofeld is more inspiring than the Hydrasynth, even if the Hydra has a way better UI and is more "powerful" (for one timbre anyway).
Bitwig is amazing no doubt but it does not have the deep integration of max for live with literally thousands of devices and solutions created over the last decade.
Arturia makes great hardware and midi devices. But they will suck your pockets dry of your hard earned cash every update they get. Any business model that you have to keep paying for updates is crazy these days! for my 40 years in this game. Back in the days Propellerhead's Reason was a great way to get into the world of synths without hardware. These days I want to pay once and get free updates and even sell the software if I choose.
