I swapped the engine on my 1190 adventure!

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 19 ก.ค. 2019
  • After the valves ran out of adjustment, I decided to exchange my engine rather than rebuild the old. I bought a wrecked bike with 9500km on the clock and exchanged the engine, computers and suspension. Also a few other updates.

      I think had it been me? I would have run the original motor until it clattered and screamed in agony! lol.... no more adjustment left for valve clearance? Okay lets see many miles she'll go and THEN put in spare engine....lol

    Got Peters (Engineer) number from this video and he welded some tabs on my 1090 to strengthen the footrest bracket, I use the power cell brackets, I can now use 4 bolts each side. Thanks for sharing his details, he’s definitely a legend.

    Just catching up with the Simpson Desert gang's videos... No pressure, just heading off on an epic trip with your buds only to hit the starter switch and find nothing! It was fun to watch. I'm challenged enough with my KLR''s engine. I can't imagine doing a whole engine and electronics package swap on a bike like yours. Well done!

    You can tell you love the horse power, unlike the 790. I sold my 1090R (regret) and bought a cheaper second hand Africa Twin, I miss the horse power of the 1090. Guess it was cheaper doing an engine swap than an engine rebuild, plus you get all the other parts from the donor bike. I crossed the simpson desert last year and loved it. All the best for your crossing on the big bike.

  • @nigelwolfe6150
    @nigelwolfe6150 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very cool project awesome it worked out. IDK if it was my playback or I blinked but I swear I never heard you actually SAY you managed to transplant the frame update!?? ONLY reason I think you did is I backed up the video to the area after you said "Ten thousand years later" and then paused where there was a glimpse of the frame and yes it looks like you successfully transplanted....would have been interesting to hear/see how that went! I know that weakness destroyed some frames on earlier bikes! Also did you ever state how many miles were on your original engine? Anyway other than those was very entertaining!

    • @Nerb1
      @Nerb1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, so in the middle of this video (not shown), I took the frame to a fabricator and they added the plate over the shock bolt part of the frame. Didnt end up cutting off the part from the 2015 frame, just made a new one. I was hesitant to show much, because modifying the frame can be an insurance issue in Australia.
      The original motor had 100,000km on it. It still ran, but needed another valve adjustment which meant grinding shims thinner.

    @nerb1 I've received a swap offer of a '13 1190 adventure (non-R) with 63,000km on the clock against my Super Ténéré... looks like it's had a relatively easy, mostly road-oriented life. I intend to use it 95% on the road too as I also have a T7 for off road.
    After your 1190 ownership, would you consider an 1190 with this type of mileage?

    • @Nerb1
      @Nerb1  ปีที่แล้ว

      They are a great bike. The non-R should be ok, but i would still check the airbox (clean and screws ok) and the top shock bolt (check the frame for cracks at that connection). If youre not confident, get a shop to look at it. Maybe see how many times the valves were adjusted in the service history. If its not shown, it has probably never been checked (which is bad). Other than those, it should be good for another 30 or 40 thousand.

    • @Nerb1
      @Nerb1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love the T7, although im having some issues with that also. I like the overall package better, but not a lot in it. Handling, ease of maintenance, weight, price... all better on the T7. Power on the 1190 was obviously better, but im ok without that. The 1190 was great though. An awesome bike, but as ive slowly been riding harder and harder terrain, and im getting older and older, the 1190 was getting more difficult to manage. The T7 was a nice step down.

    Hi, just stumbled upon this and have no history...how come you ran out of valve adjustment? super high miles? I did almost 90.000 miles on my SM 990 and had to swap to a new engine because of base gasket leak, and it makes no financial sense to rebuild the old lump. Had to check the valves maybe 6 times in all those miles, and only adjusted them 2x i think. Anyway, fresh 3.000 miles motor in there, good for another 87.000 miles :)

    • @TheMojomoto
      @TheMojomoto 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      just saw your answer below...82.000kms...that's not very much. hmmmm

    • @Nerb1
      @Nerb1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems it was running lean. Thats my best guess for the quick burnout of valves. Exhaust was very white.

  • @GerhardCombrink
    @GerhardCombrink 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m clueless about such things, but it seems it would have been easier to transfer the 2013 bits to the 2015 rather than the frame swop you did, or was it that the 2015 had frame damage?

    • @Nerb1
      @Nerb1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the 2015 frame was dented where the crash bars mounted to it, so the frame was a write-off and is not allowed to be registered in this country. So I just took everything good that was left.

    Did you feel the swing arm bearings going bad or just noticed they were toast when they were out? Are you going to make the new wheel tubeless?

    • @Nerb1
      @Nerb1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didnt notice them. When I pulled the pivot bolt out, it was stuck. Then I noticed the bearings were clogged up and one seemed totally seized
      New front will be tubed. I would prefer tubeless, but no easy option around without spending well over a grand.

      @@Nerb1 A very reputable wheel builder here in the states (woodys wheels) uses the outex tape system. A couple of the people I ride with use the 3M extreme sealing tape with excel takasagos. Cyclecruza(sp?) Has a video out where he uses 3m sealant and the tape. Rottweiller used the 3m tape in its 1290 build. Its around $50 for 5 yards. I think its 3m part number 4412.
