    I agree with your dialogue in regard to finding the correct shot for your choke; keep a constant (your choke) and test one variable independently (your shotshells) at a time. Like shooting rifles, you may have the same model in the same caliber as a buddy, but what shoots well through his gun, may not be what will shoot well through yours. Finding the correct bullet weight and manufacturer may be a royal pain, but chances are one or a few will prove to be best suited for your firearm.

    With the black cloud you're supposed to usr a special choke because its a different wad that opens backwards. But I agree with you that your normal factory choke is just fine and find a good shell that works with your gun. Black cloud 3" #3 patterned like garbage out of my mossy 500 with factory mod choke. I love the work you put into all your pattern testing videos and it motivated me to do my own testing!

    I like the Kent fast steel, and the Remington sportsman out of my gun. I just get whichever I can get a case of. Usually end up with a mix of the two in my bag I couldn’t tell you which performs best. If I’m in a bind I’ll buy a cheap box of Winchesters and I do think they perform well but I’ve had several hulls split hasn’t caused an issue but dirties the gun bad

    I hunted for years with Remingtons. More often than not an aftermarket choke will help. On the other hand all of the chokes that came with my Benelli work well. I love Patternmaster chokes. They were great in my 870's. At some point I will buy one for my M2. Right now I have a lot of needs that come before that want.

    Hevi X is the best shell on the market. They are expensive as all heck but I spend good money to go duck-hunt and when I get a drake mallard or big drake sprig in range I wanna dish rag it not blow feathers out of it. Can’t stand a bird sailing on Me either. I shoot a 20 with the 4’s and it covers everything from teal to large honkers. When the teal are really in thick I switch to hevi steel and save the hevi x. Also when shooting the 12 gauge the hands down best load I’ve ever shot is a black cloud 23/4” 3 shot 1500 FPS. Absolutely murder stuff with that load. Put to shame all my buddies shooting 3.5” shells.
    Good little review. I’ve also shot all the shells you’ve listed in this vid. These days I just stick with one brand or two at the most. Find them on sale and buy
    cases. Testing all those diff shells and mixing and matching and playing the “best shell game” a box at a time gets just as expensive as buying the good premium shells you know work at discounts in cases 👍🏽

    Yea, I think the factory chokes shoot great. I did buy an aftermarket improved modified, because when we went diver hunting I needed something a little tighter for those 30-40 yard shots. It came in a two pack so I'll have to try a comparison vid or something. Thanks for sharing.

    There is a certain type of shell and choke for every scenario. If you're hunting ducks that are in your face or hunting divers that are fast, low and far. The pattern criteria changes with the type of hunt. And shotguns ALWAYS get dirty and you should ALWAYS clean your firearms after every hunt.

    Buy a pattern master classic extended range. Big shot tighter patterns small shot bigger patterns forget shooting black cloud because of the wads. I've seen the shot not even come out of the wad when shot. This choke is the best all around tube there is. I've tested a lot aim tight and give em the smack down

    My overall best loads have 3 inch #2 hevi steel but I was also shooting a hevi shot extended range out of my stoegers m3500. Hevi metal is a bird duster plain and simple. Knocks the snot out of birds.

  • @williampeacock9670
    @williampeacock9670 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Loved the review. I shoot a Mossberg 935 and it shoots the 3 inch Remington Hi Speed Steel #2 the best in both Modified and Full stock choke tubes. I also tried the Carlson's Black Cloud .727 Extended range choke tube. It patterned fairly well but the Mossberg full choke .730 stock choke shot better patterns at 40 yards. I just purchased a Carlson's Mid Range .743 and will be testing that with various 3 inch shells in the near future. I found with the the same problem Titus did which was finding a dealer that had a good supply of the Remington Hi Speed Steel. My local Sportsman's Warehouse ran out just after the season opened and didn't resupply until MARCH !!!!

    When it comes to aftermarket choke, people buy them because guy like shooting full chokes and xfull choke and companies makes tight Construction chokes rated for steel shot Especially with bigger pellets.

    I’m a little late to this video but.. your theory about aftermarket chokes is correct. I bought a code black duck from patternmaster and it shot alright but my factory choke shot better.

  • @glennpennington5789
    @glennpennington5789 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with you on the Hevi-Metal. They hammer birds with quick kills long as I do my part. I do feel the newer lots are twice as dirty as the original case I bought. Not sure if it's a coincidence or if they've changed powders, primers or what but the last case I bought was horribly dirty. Definitely left me scratching my head with them. However the gun still cycles and goes bang so guess I'll have to clean more often lol. Keep up with the vids enjoy real world honest opinions even if they aren't what I'm expecting. That's how we grow and learn as hunters and every other part if life.

    I shoot my chokes that came with my guns but also love the after market chokes. My best one last year was the code black duck more like a tight modified, my second best was the Carlson mid range, and long range. I have found that full choke like the kicks high flyer full worked well and code black goose. I don't think any shell brand is totally clean I have heard Winchester of all kinds are dirty. Kent and federal have cleaned up their shells supposedly. My favorites have been federal blue box, Kent fasteel, rio, Remington nitro mags. I'm trying others this season. Finally Remington sportsman have filler pellets in them, I liked them but cut one open and didn't like that.

    I’ve enjoyed your patterning videos and have had good luck with some of the same shells you have liked. That being said, every gun is different and some shells that shot like shit for you have patterned well for me at 40 yards. Everyone needs to pattern their own guns! Videos like this can point you in certain a direction, but nobody knows how their gun shoots unless they put it on paper!

      @@peterjazz8315 yeah what you read and just kinda the increased speed has just more pressure on the barrel and what not wearing it out more. And some chokes won’t hold up to it. I consider anything above 1500 high velocity

    Hevi Metal was the ticket. Key word was. They changed the recipe for them. I don’t like them anymore which is unfortunate. Maybe it’s my gun but I feel it’s probably the shell.

    “They’re dirty” #1 reason I don’t use a gas gun. Waterfowl hunting is dirty… if you can’t use your gun after dropping it in the mud then it isn’t worth a damn on a duck hunt. Inertia all day.

    Try some of the slower shells better patterns kill birds. Speed kills patterns sometimes.

    I'd like to know your thoughts on the Kent's Fasteel 2.0 vs the original Fasteel. The 2.0s pattern very well out of my Franchi Affinity with a Patternmaster. The price point on them is also very nice. For a cheaper option the Scheel's brand Fiocchis aren't terrible either although I haven't had much experience with how well they kill ducks yet.

    I notice when looking at 3" Drylock, they offer different oz. loads with varying velocities. My question is when looking at #3 shot you have two choices, one being 1 3/8 oz. @ 1300fps and the other being 1 1/4 oz. @ 1450fps. What load combination makes a better or more effective combination. Thanks

    • @paytonlee2896
      @paytonlee2896 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it’s been a year, but my opinion, take with a grain of salt, is that you use them for different applications. With your heavier load, you’re going to be going a lot slower but the mass of BBs in your shell is much greater. If you’re out hunting larger, slower, harder to knock down birds (Canada’s) the heavier load would work better. If you’re hunting small ducks and faster birds, the faster, lighter shot is going to be more effective and you don’t have to lead as much.
      Take as you will. Not saying you should or shouldn’t use #3 shot for geese or ducks. You could ask 50 different people and get 50 different answers.

    Love the vids! I have both a pattern master and wadwizard choke. I have found I get solid patterns with any shells Under 1450fps. Fiocchi, rio, heavy steel and federal blues smoke the birds! I do admit I prefer tight chokes in most situations. Just personal preference. Great work and love the podcasts as well.

    can you elaborate as to why you "shouldn't shoot shells that fast out of a shotgun."? I've never heard that statement before.. i shoot high velocity blindside and love them. Box shows 1675fps. just a hair slower than the shells you mention at the beginning.

    I really like the field and strem ammo, but i also hate supporting dicks, every year dicks has a 20% everything sale, so i was getting them for like $7 a box and trap loads for $4 a box. You should also check the Rio shells from Rogers, there only like $90 and case and there awesome.

      The thing about hevi x, I think, is you use an IC choke. Crazy but if youre putting it thru full its not going to be good.

    If you can be patient and get them in range anything will take down duck and practice shooting and use your factory chokes and learn them don't like factory chokes get aftermarket and learn it. Learn to shoot and learn to be patient is the most important. What's with complaining about dirty rounds I shot the cheapest to expensive I have never cleaned my gun in middle of season I have super Vinci 2 3/4 3 1/2 cleaned it at beginning of season and never cleaned till end of season no problems ever in fact I don't think I have ever had to clean my shotties but once before season that goes for my Nova pump or my super Vinci dirty lol I know people that have shot there guns for several seasons before they clean them and they shoot alot autos and pumps .and I know some that went seasons without clean and had little problems then cleaned them and they worked flawlessly and very seldom did any of us have crippled birds it happens .but shouldn't happen often if you know your gun and you practice and get your birds in range and have learned how to lead them or follow you should be able to kill birds with the cheapest of dirty rounds as you call some rounds sure some are dirtier than othere but I have yet had malfunction in the field because of dirty ammo that I had to clean my gun after one day or ten days or whole season. Just saying I'm sure there are plenty guy out there that are not having these kind of problems not saying some of the guys or myself are marksman but we do practice and we do work our birds in close and we seldom have any cripples to hunt down.

    People act like chokes are extreme high tech. There is way more engineering and variables in a shell than a choke tube, my winchesters factory modified and full choke shoot better than more than half of the after market chokes. Fiiochi has some that are from scheels and they are the best patterning shells i shoot and they are cheap. The only expensive shells i like are heavy-shot, and black cloud. I shoot Winchester sx4 with a kicks highflier modified, only aftermarket choke that has been worth spending any extra money on for me.
