  • The Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area has so much to offer. Not only did we camp there, but I got to explore some of the mine pit lakes as well. In this video, I am at the Portsmouth Mine Pit lake. It is the deepest inland lake in MN at 450 feet deep. The shoreline drops off steeply and the water is extremely clear, making it a very interesting lake to fish and just boat around on to see the sights.
If you are enjoying these videos, or would like to suggest a lake for me to review, please let me know in the comments, or email me at: rande@gomidwestfishing.com

Symbolic that you mentioned Reggie's name and the fish immediately came off the hook? Very cool lake! Crazy how clear that water was, and it was crazy how big those rock bass were!

I think that northern was scared at the very mention of Reggie's name. He has that effect on fish. Thanks Randy for stopping by. I'm sure you didn't have much time in-between pizza places.

There's a little lake in central MN that's spring fed and 120 ft. Deep with stocked rainbow and crystal clear water. The trout feed in schools and are very aggressive at meal time. But they won't bite when it's not dinner time.

I've noticed that trout only feed at certain times, but when they do, its a lot of fun. Thanks for the info.

Great video thanks for sharing it. Looks like a great place to scuba 🤿 dive in too. We go to Crystals Falls to Fortune Pond it’s a old pit mine very clear some fish 🐟 and old trucks and stuff down there. It’s about 300 feet down. Thanks From Wisconsin

It is a great place to scuba! There is suppose to be some boat wreck at the bottom you can explore. I looked up Crystal Falls. Is that in Michigan? I see a few videos about it. It looks really cool. Thanks for all the great info.

The trout will be suspended at 30' through the middle of the lake.
Use a jig. Or a deep runner rapala on a long line. If you can get down to 25 feet the trout will rise. When they are in feeding mode.

Thanks for the info. It might be worth it to come back with an actual boat to try for some.

Nice video! If you need any lake suggestions lake Pokigama is a pretty nice lake. From what I have seen you can get some big walleye.

Thanks Jack. Yes, I love lake suggestions. I will put that one on the list and will be sure to give you a shout out when I go there. There are many Pokegama lakes, can you tell me the closest town so I can fish the right one? Here is one I fished near Minong, WI: th-cam.com/video/olGit7Ozmeg/w-d-xo.html Thanks for the info.

There is a deeper mine pit nearby. Mahnomen #1 gets to 550 feet deep

I checked it out, and you are right! A search for deepest lake brings up Portsmouth, and doesn't mention Mahnomen, even though it is deeper. Thanks for the info.

Amazing clarity of the water! I’d definitely want my life jacket for water that deep 😜 Trolling worked, even for pike! Poor Reggie, he didn’t get his pic 😂

Hi Dave. I hear this is a great place to scuba dive as well. There is suppose to be some interesting things to see underwater.

I think I will be going back there since there are 15 more lakes just like this one. I don't think they allow motors in many of these lakes, so I will get some exercise rowing. Thanks Wes!

Trout don't come off the hook if you know how to reel in a fish with soft lips.
