"Don't worry about it" :: "You'll have that" - in a round about way answered my question.

Thanks for bringing this into existence Kristin 😊

I liked and subscribed after reading some comments and your replies. I appreciate the Gen-X humor... plus I like how you're not the "usual" music maker doing tutorials. Keep going.

Oh no! Is my Gen-X showing?

Heya, I just stumbled on your videos and I really enjoy them! The tone, the stuff you do and how you talk about it! It feels freeing in a way I think I kinda lost somewhere.. thank you!

Thanks! Honestly, I think I lost part of it myself over the years; and hence, this channel was born to reconnect/reimagine/update some old thought patterns and how I interact with music. Glad to see other people are relating the process.

Congratulations on winning the well-deserved Grammy award for best youtube video from a less than 1000 subscriber channel that ambiguously touches on a musically related topic, from a non Grammy winning video publishing on a less than 1000 subscriber channel unambiguously spewing questionable music.

It's exciting, right? My Writer/ Manager/ Professional Dream Interpretation Consultant assure me that the award is being sent through the mail and definitely not a made up story. Why would I ever question it?

@@ComposerKristin Asking too many questions is like stirring up a beehive - you might get some honey, but you'll also get stung! The cards once foretold you a bright future - and the future starts now [insert pause and thoughtfully look at an indeterminate point on the horizon while gently nodding in understanding of one more of the universe's secrets].

Sometimes I wish I went to music school. Your content is awesome and I love your methodical approach. Would you be willing to do like a musical review of some of the songs I have up on my TH-cam channel? I would love to know what someone who’s far more musically intelligent than I thinks of the songs I write.

Well... music school doesn't exactly pay the bills, so I wouldn't wish too hard, LOL.
I'm extraordinarily flattered, but I would just feel weird commenting/critiquing someone else's music at this point. This is actually a topic I've struggled with a bit since starting this channel: How to actually teach composition. Because my experience was more one of being loaded up with theory and form classes, but the actual composing was more of a "figure it out" process. Even private lessons were just the professor making suggestions, which I promptly ignored (which made him progressively madder and madder, to be fair). So... I've long thought about whether it's a "teachable" skill. And... of course it is. None of us just come out of womb knowing how to do this, but I'm not sure I've entirely identified what I think that process is or should be. I guess I'm going to be mulling that over for a while.
My general (probably unhelpful) suggestions/comments are:
      1. Listen, listen, listen to a lot of music. Especially stuff that you like and that's close to your style. How often does the melody and/or harmony change? How often does it repeat phrases and sections? Do you like how that sounds? If you read music and there's a score or sheet music you can follow along with, also do that. Otherwise, make note of what you're hearing, using whatever language you have, while you're following along. You don't necessarily need to know the names of things to hear them.
      2. I often think structure is more important that the little details. You can have a great melody or chord progression, but if you just repeat that one phrase over and over again, without any changes, well... most people aren't going to love listening to that. There's an element of that in minimalism, but that music still tends to, eventually, go somewhere.
      3. You're going to suck. Probably forever. The older I get, the less I understand what "good" music even is. The stuff I like seems to be universally disliked, so... does it make it bad? Are my tastes bad? Are their tastes bad? Beats me. I have enough fancy words in my back pocket that I can make a great argument either way, but winning a debate doesn't necessarily mean I've won some big "truth". I have many days I truly don't know what that means. Is there truth in music? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
      4. Ask "why?" I ask this a lot of people, and I don't know if it's too much for anyone who's starting out. The first thing I ever wrote was a string quartet, because I just wanted to see if I could do it (I mean, if that Mozart dude could write something at 5 .... 😂 ). I also played in a string quartet at the time, so it wasn't too unlike just writing something for your band. It was terrible, but... I kept at it anyway. But at a certain point, I do think people need to ask the why of their music, mostly because it determines your choices. I'm not getting into the charts with an atonal pop song, so I'm going to have to conform to some sort of standard if that's what I'm seeking. Likewise, do you want something that sounds pretty, or shocking, or is some sort of puzzle, or expresses an explicit emotion? It's fine to not really know, but I find there's some value in the asking.
Aaaand... now I want to write an atonal pop song. Damn it....

@@ComposerKristin thank you for the awesome response. I would still encourage you to check out some of the music I’ve written on my channel. It’s pretty ok as far as I can tell. I have decided to attend TH-cam university and learn how to write sheet music. I feel like I learned how to run before I could walk and now I’m tripping bad. I’m gonna keep at and maybe one day I’ll 3d print a string quartet and have them play me a song. Seriously your content is great and it’s cool that there’s goofy goobers goofin hard with science and music.
