I saw a man who was over 300 lbs. And he rolled without a sound. Smoothest thing I ever seen. Most fall and roll like a brick. He rolled like a whisper. Always been my motivation of ground work.
This helped a lot more than some of the other things I'd looked at. I try to practice when I'm not in class, but it's so difficult without somebody there showing you what went wrong. I love this.
my reverse ukemi is thanks to this gentleman. I watched the video on loop for 15 mins before my jiu-jitsu class. My first attempt was almost perfect and I have never even felt a sting from a reverse ukemi since.
This is a great video to open up the eyes of close minded discriminators. You CAN have long hair and do martial arts You CAN do martial arts if you are black You CAN have long hair and be black guy. I know a lot of you will misunderstand my comment, but I am not racist nor I imply anything racist. I am just sick and tired of people who discriminate because of stupid stereotypes.
Excellent. Very helpful. Also, a delightfully calm and systematic presentation without hocus-pocus or hype. When I relocate to Philly in Feb 2010, I'll look for your dojo.
Excellent video, what a lot of viewers are overlooking is that this is a focus on the basic mechanics....once learned you up the anti...I have informed people in my local horse riding community to take note and that they do have an Aikido dojo in their area....Many thanx...Al
And he is also instrukting in such a good way, that you will understand very easy why it is good for your body to do the ukemi in the way he is instructing. And then he seems to be very good himself at what he is doing.
That was pretty cool. The simplicity of the roll is pretty amazing to me at the moment. My girlfriend tripped one time, she drove her face into the ground. I think i should teach her how to roll now. Amazing tutorial Mister. . .
Very good way to explain Ukemi, talking and showing at the same time and in the right specific moments in order to imprint the correct movements. A personal way to approach could be to clean your mind, completely from overthinking, then imagine to be a big wheel. Domo arigato, Sensei Donovan.
Thank you for creating this video. I am just beginning Ki Aikido and I am struggling with ukemi, so I am really grateful for your excellent explanation.
OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! I finally after 5 months of doing Aikido was able to do a forward roll without any pain in my shoulder arm and actually do it in a straight line! IN MY BEDROOM! I'm soooo stoked! Now I'm gonna show my sensei that I can do it now that I'm 7th Kyu and then maybe he will pick me to throw around. SOOOO EXCITED! I was positioning the hands incorrectly. Thank you so much!. I was sooo frustrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just great and very good explaining the teqn. I`ve been practice Aikido for only 6 mnt now, and falling forw/backw, and rolling backwards is NOT easy.. This video certanly helps a LOT.. Thanks
This is a beautiful and brilliant video of Ukemi. I have a lot of trouble with the falling aspects of my game in bjj and really don't like the feel of the rolls (They kind of freak me out) This is the best instruction I've seen on Ukemi to date. Well done!
@threat645 purpose: when you are getting thrown, it's a way to protect yourself. If the technique translate into a hyper extension on your elbow and doing this can prevent it from being snapped, do it.
There no Aikido Yoshinkan in Michigan . Maybe one but far away. I wish more Yoshikan /Yoshinkai Aikido were in Mi I studied under Takashi Kushida in 1987 and in 2012 just before his passing . He was a great man , I will never forget him ! Takashi Kushida once was ahead of 50 schools in the USA. His son teaches Yoshokai Aikido in Ann Arbor. I gave Aikido my heart and trained 150% each time I came to the dojo . He got mad at me and charges at me like he was going to attack me . later at closing time I brought it up to him and he threaten to break my knee if I came back to class. It hurt me to the core because I love Aikido and couldn't go back. It took me many many months to get over not having Aikido in my life. I looked for a school to continue training but none were the same . There is to this story , I didn't feel ( wasn't ) wanted even giving my 150% The history of Aikido is love and harmony but this was harmony .
Learning to fall in this way isn't just useful in aikido class. I tripped over a curb one day and instinctively went into a roll. I was over and up before I'd even realized I'd done anything. This was a real life situation, outside of a fight, obviously, but as an older person, I saved myself a world of hurt by knowing how to roll properly.
Merci beaucoup Aikikai
We don´t roll at exactly the same kind, but your videos are very helpfull to learn sticking on the mat with every part of the body. So it´s possible to control the rolling speed and to control the movement at all. Nice teaching video.
Didático, mesmo sem entender o idioma, mas conhecendo os fundamentos do AIKIDO, compreendi o que ele ensinou, muito bom. Didactic, even without understanding the language, but knowing the fundamentals of Aikido, I understood what he taught, very good.
You're right, it does look very much like the front roll is "sideways", the trick to front rolls is to not allow your head to touch the ground...its like that with all the rolls actually. never let the head touch ground. Also this sideways kinda roll makes it ALOT easier for beginners to learn this. And Practising on hard ground isnt a bad idea. Lets you know where youre rough spots are :-) but as for me personally..soft surfaces are easier with alittle more speed to the fall
Very good Video. Im doing Krav Maga, most stuff is of course stand fight, but i need to learn rolling in all variations to get up the ranks. This video helped me alot, thx for posting it on YT and greetings from Germany :)
I am taking an Aikido class for a P.E. credit in college, and if he happened to come into town to teach a class, maybe not specifically in my Aikido course, it would be very cool. I really like his style of explaining the details of the roll and demonstrating both how to do it and how NOT to do it. I also like the emphasis on making it natural, rather than being picky, because pickiness is not realistic for an actual fight
:) beautiful and elegant, smooth feeling together (both), ... she is doin' a very quiet roll, and i am almost able to feel while youre rollin' and explaining :D thx
Could you do a video on how to take advanced ukemi, for example taking a full breakfall for a kote gaeshi, iri nage or shijo-nage, specially the last one..I find it a difficult on how to approach this ukemi since one ends up almost on his back.. btw..thanks for such great video!
If there were just two things to make sure one practices and gets comfortable doing, it would be 'situational awareness' and falling. To die because you weren't paying attention or you were afraid to fall would be very very sad. Sensai Donovan san! You are a phenomenal teacher. To break a simple forward roll down for those who know nothing and make it look like it is; simple, no sound, easy peasy like breathing (well, shoot, most people don't know how to breathe correctly)...well, I am impressed!! I wish I could take your classes!! You voice and manner are wonderful. I'm very good with kinesiology and teaching proper movement to those who aren't martial art experts or dance professionals or athletes in sports. Not all athletes know how to move correctly. You can tell by their 'C' posture. It is a rare teacher that can break down the simplest moves for anyone to understand. You are a great teacher. It is also rare to find humans that aren't afraid to fall or breathe correctly much less to move every little muscle necessary to do a movement, excluding all the muscles that have no business operating to execute a movement... without thinking. Your proprioceptors (in your spinal column) are responsible for keeping you moving without breaking an ankle or a wrist or looking dumb in public. If you break a leg, twist an ankle, etc. one needs to retrain their proprioceptors again for the new 'alignment'...(.standing on one foot with eyes closed and then the other foot with eyes closed is the fastest remedy to retrain proprioceptors) but one HAS to practice until the movement and/or the skill is second nature.
great. so many kids watch my rolling video and dont finish on the toes. the top of the foot is on the mat and i tell them that is not right. i do it like you. you come up on toes you can spin or roll again or stand up. great work and if anyone questions why to do this i will send them my vid and yours so they see how that foot should be. 5 stars
falling and rolling are two different things, for a casting throw or a push you would roll, using kaiten waza or methods of rolling, and when you're falling straight to the ground you breakfall, using ukemi waza, or methods of breakfalling, aikido is good for self defense, but some things are lost in translation when americans teach a japanese art
Me encantó lo calmado de la demostración, muuy util. Pero tengo algo de duda, porque he visto que ese movimiento se hace menos de lado... Esta bien cualquier versión?
@99XM It's not the basis of any martial art---you never do ukemis in boxing, for example. It's still a vital move in falling situations in and out of fighting, though.
I'll never be able to do mai kaiten properly because of back and hip problems. Waite Sensei has tried (whenever I attend one of his seminars) to help me but it's purely mechanical issues (skeletal rather than muscular) so I've developed my own rather clunky way of meeting the mat safely.
I saw a man who was over 300 lbs. And he rolled without a sound. Smoothest thing I ever seen. Most fall and roll like a brick. He rolled like a whisper. Always been my motivation of ground work.
Rest in peace sensei Waite, I've learned a lot from you through TH-cam! We all love you
Noooo
Don't tell me that 😢😢
very nice explanation in such a controlled and quiet way, that would make a aikido
beginner pupil feel safe and in good hands by the instructor
This helped a lot more than some of the other things I'd looked at. I try to practice when I'm not in class, but it's so difficult without somebody there showing you what went wrong. I love this.

Nice clear instruction. Easy to follow. I think this will help anyone no matter how new to Aikido.
Thank you.
great instruction ; the details are wonderful. Thank you Waite shihan.

very clear instructions, easy to follow, although I can barely do the roll. I guess it take more practice. great job !!
Really like this especially how you took time to explain the common mistakes and how to avoid them. This one will go into my study collection.
Outstanding! Excellent teaching. Thank you taking the time to post.

The First video where they REALLY tech the knowledge of the Ukemis.
Thanks and hugs from Toledo, Spain.
This is the best video that really explains the ukemi process from start to finish, great stuff!
This is the best ukemi teaching video I have seen. My Sensei teaches ukemi exactly like this. Thank you.
Thank you for creating this video. I am just beginning Ki Aikido and I am struggling with ukemi, so I am really grateful for your excellent explanation.

The best basic Ukemi video on TH-cam I have found so far.
Learning lots from this. I find ukemi quite challenging and am happy to come across mr Waite his teachings.

Thank you so much. Really appreciate such detail and in depth understanding of Ukemi Falls.
Thank you for this vid! It clarifies things for me a whole lot and helps me see where I was going wrong. You make it look easy.

Very well done. Great job of verbal explanation fallowed by the physical example.
Thank you very much. I just started AIKIKAI AKIDO and your video really helps!
Thank you Sensei. I have gone back to aikido after a long pause and having a hard time with rolls.
really smooth ukemi, great description!

Best ukemi intructional video I ever saw.

As usual, outstanding clear instruction
Great tutorial video! It gave me another way of explanation how to fall and I'll try it when working with children! Thank you!!!

Fantastic, I have just started judo lessons, this will help me improving my falling techniques. Domo arigato gozaimasu :)
Beautifully and efficiently communicated. Thank you. K
I love this man's voice! So regal!
Great basic and very useful!

Very simple explanation. Very useful video. Thanks to master.
Really well demonstrated and explaned ! GOOD JOB !!!
The technique looks quite easy, I'll certainly put it to the test! Thanks!

Very good video, nice and clear for the beginner. Some slo-mo might have been nice, I found myself hitting the pause button a fair bit!
:) beautiful and elegant, smooth feeling together (both), ... she is doin' a very quiet roll, and i am almost able to feel while youre rollin' and explaining :D thx
she??!
+Doug Moses You did see the female? She is in the video for several minutes. Apparently you didn't watch it all.
I hope you will be happy in this and the nexts lives 🍀🙏
he resently visited my alternative art of peace-school in norway. He leaded our class for 6 days^^
muy, muy bueno!! realmente didáctico, se ve que es un excelente docente, xD! gracias por compartirlo!
perfectly explained, well demonstrated. Incredible teaching!

you are greatest master thanks for your lesson
thank you very well explained
I have had problems with ushiro kaiten. I hope when I get back on the mat your help will enhance my skill in this area. Thank you.
SOLID technique. Arigato gozaimasu.
How does one become a live in student like this man did for one of the greats??
Thank you Sensei for such a easy to understand video un ukemi.
