About Papadakis Racing
The Papadakis Racing team began drifting in 2004 and is the most winning team in Formula Drift history, earning the 2021 and 2015 championship titles with driver Fredric Aasbo, as well as back-to-back championships with driver Tanner Foust in 2007 and 2008.
This season, Fredric Aasbo returns to defend his title in the Rockstar Energy Toyota GR Supra, while Ryan Tuerck also returns to the team to drive the Toyota Corolla hatchback.
Team owner Stephan Papadakis is a legend of sport-compact racing who began building his reputation in the 1990s with the first front-wheel drive, tube-chassis drag car in the U.S. The team earned multiple records and championships in the discipline, turning in elapsed times and trap speeds previously thought unattainable in front-drive drag cars. Papadakis' successes in front-wheel drive were matched by his efforts in rear-wheel drive when he campaigned just the fifth car to join the NHRA's Sport Compact 200 MPH club.

Was just thinking what it would take to be his apprentice. Probably a master's in engineering to begin with. What makes him so one of a kind is growing with the tech as it became available. You can't pay for that kind of experience. It's priceless.
Other TH-camrs spend 2 years putting a turbo kit on a car, while Papadakis builds a whole crazy car and puts it in a concise, 11-minute video
To be fair, they are professionals, with a crew and a big budget
True, stuffs not even that hard to do you only need like a couple $1M to do it and a big brain. Kinda crazy how some people take so long to do something with such a low barrier to entry.
Also they aren’t trying to make more revenue or money out of their youtube they do it for informative reasons. TH-camrs 90% do it for a consistent amount of video’s
Definitely has nothing to do with the fact he owns and runs a business specifically dedicated to building race cars.

He said on Instagram that he wants to put the B58 in an A80 Supra.
I'd love to know what they could do with the new S58
I mean, from an engineering point of view, the only thing good about the b58 over a 2jz is weight and stock oil pump.

Whole lot of sensors you have to adapt? On a short block alone, there's like 4. The b58 has wayyyy more when you include the variable valve technology that you mentioned?
I'm sorry, but the b58 despite being a newer engine isn't that revolutionary and definately doesn't have the market.
The connecting rod ratio on these engines is 1.58:1 which means that it's reliability at higher RPM is dogshit because of how quickly the connecting rod switches directions which creates more g force. YOU WANT THE ROD AND PISTON TO TRAVEL SLOWER. f1 and motorcycle engines run 2:1 ratios. The 2jz ran a 1.65:1
The only reason you'd want a short rod ratio is for power under 4,000 rpm, where quick sudden pull of the piston with low duration cams creates a powerful vacuum that fills the combustion chamber quicker; this doesn't work at higher rpms.
The crankshaft being a undersquare designs means there is less support for the connecting rod crank pin as it is further out. 94.6mm stroke vs 2jz 86mm stroke. 50mm crankpin on b58 vs 52mm on 2jz, meaning the stock 2jz has wayyyy better support and can withstand more horsepower than the b58. The area of support is much larger.
Smaller bore = smaller pistons = smaller valves. b58 30.1, 28.5mm vs 2jz 33.6mm, 29mm. Meaning the 2jz isn't as restricted compared to b58.
Flowbench; Stock flow, the b58 lies within 170CFM range, where as 2jz exceeds 220 CFM
You can talk about archaic engines, but in the 90's when you didn't have to limit airflow and tolerances for "emissions", engines could make heaps of power easily where as today, emission control is what's limiting power in engines today.
What an insane build, but I guess that's to be expected with Papadakis, they are all on another level... and in 8 weeks!
Yeah that time frame is nuts! This would be a 12 month build for a lot of other shops
That supra engine is one of the best sounding engines.

Thanks for including all the detailed info on the build methods you're using. Things like the cleco fasteners, rivet nuts, the type of filament for printing bushings, all great ideas to have in a mental toolbox.

Formula Drift has 2 of most unique GR86, this B58 powered one, and Ken's 1GR powered one.
You are extraordinarily intelligent, organized, and creative. No doubt you could be a top rocket designer for space X. Your attention to detail and shop cleanliness-orderliness permeates all you do and is vital to success. Most don't understand this. It is a real pleasure to watch your concise rapid fire videos. All content, no bs, fully honest and straightforward. Yah, I mean all these compliments sincerely. I'm over 70 yrs old btw and am so glad to see much younger people that I can immediately respect. There's hope.
Still one of the best TH-cam channels. You do such a good job getting to the point, keeping things simple, but still respecting your viewers' intelligence by including the complicated parts as well.
Steph's builds are legit. Absolutely beautiful and amazing. Been a fan of his since the Battle of the Import drag racing days in the mid 1990s, he has always been at the top of the game!
This is SO good. I don't mind the common 10-20 minute build time-lapse videos, but these concise explainers you guys do are on another level.

I don't know how that's even possible- the amount of design & fab alone seems like that would push it out of that window- let alone actually putting everything together, troubleshooting, testing, etc. This is unbelievably impressive. They spent too much developing that B58 for the supra, it make sense for them to continue using it, plus the engine is newer and has better support.
