Outstanding, I was a very excited 12 year old kid back then, with no idea the crappy Twins would ever "make the playoffs". 1987 will live forever in Minnesota!

In my opinion, all the ALCS games involving the Minnesota Twins from 1987 and 1991 should be released onto DVD!

There's nothing more jawdropping than hearing the Metrodome crowd in full roar with the camera trained on Sparky Anderson. The expression on his face is one of powerless futility: there's absolutely nothing he can do to reverse the situation. Once I saw this, I knew the Twins had a chance.

The Twins, at 85-77 caught fire at the right time. I honestly thought the Tigers would win in 4 or 5, but they get outplayed big time. This was my first hard lesson in playoff upsets as a Detroit fan. Mad respect for this Twins team. Over the years, I have learned to really appreciate them!
I got to see the other side of the upset experience when the Pistons beat the Lakers in 2004. I honestly thought Detroit had no chance. In the respective Game 2's Pat Sheridan and Kobe Bryant looked like they announced their respective teams' entry into a competitive series, but that was it. Viola, Reardon, Blyleven, Puckett, Gietti, Gladden, and others rose to the occasion much like Wallace x 2, Rip, Tayshawn, Mr. Big Shot, the Big Nasty, and others did for the Pistons. That's the beauty of sports: anyone has a chance once you are in the playoffs.

Daniel Zanier Yes they were. Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola were the A team for NBC with Costas and Kubek as the B team. Doesn’t get any better than that.

    - This game served as an omen for the Tigers; after a bitterly contested division race with Toronto, finally overtaking the Blue Jays on the last day of the season to clinch the AL East, they ran into an unexpected buzzsaw in the form of the Twins. Sure, the Twins had dropped their last 5 games of the regular season but that was AFTER they'd locked up the AL West; they didn't have anything to play for those last 5 games & probably rested a lot of their starters to keep them healthy for the playoffs. They were ready inspite of the fact they finished on a 5-game losing skid. They were well-rested...meanwhile the Tigers had to scrap & claw their way into the postseason, & then once they finally got there...BAM. They hit a wall vs the Twins in the ALCS.

And it showed, clearly the Minnesota Twins had an extra gear that the Tigers did not. They won the '87 ALCS practically outright, and therefore could rest up for the Cardinals. Who had to go the full 7 games against San Francisco.

how dare bob Costas call the legendary homer hanky a "fad" it brought the concept of a piece of cloth being a valuable asset in a playoff run in baseball

Wow That season of 87 with the Minnesota Twins record there were 8 teams in baseball that had a better record than they did and if they played in the Tigers division they would have finished in 5th place and would not have even made the playoffs so glad that they changed the rules in baseball playoffs because of this 87 playoff season now the team with the best record gets home field advantage throughout the playoffs and in the World Series still pisses me off to this day that they were favored and had home-field advantage in the playoffs and World Series.....something to think about!

Little did Sparky Anderson and the Tigers know what a hornets nest the Metrodome would become in this series.

The Tigers gave up John Smoltz for Alexander and they couldn't even win Game 1. One of the worst trades ever.

At the time it was a great deal for Detroit. They don't get to the '87 postseason without Alexander. And considering Detroit was never really close to contending thereafter, Smotlz wouldn't have done them much good.

Both teams got what they were looking for. Detroit needed another starter to get over the top in the Al East that year and the Braves got another young pitcher to help in the rebuilding. Bobby Cox knew what he was doing as GM and without Alexander As stated the Tigers don't win the AL East.

The Twins came after, and stung Alexander early. And he didn't look very sharp, hung a lot of pitches that the Twins jumped on. Which forced Alexander to be a finesse type pitcher, and that was an even bigger mistake.
