Legong Dance at Pasar Malam Istimewa Dordrecht (Upi) - Peduli Seni Indonesia

The word “Legong” derives from “leg,” which means flexible or supple dance movements, and “gong,” which refers to the gamelan. Therefore, “legong” means dance movements accompanied by gamelan music.
The gamelan used to accompany the Legong dance is called Gamelan Semar Pagulingan. The Legong dance is typically performed by two young girls who have not yet reached menstruation.
This dance is traditionally performed under the full moon in the courtyard of the royal palace. The two dancers are referred to as “legong.” They are usually equipped with fans as props during the performance.
