When I heard "Pini di Roma" from a vinyl recording, it was the only piece I knew by Respighi. Back then I felt that this composer has much to say and much to be learned from. This piece proves it still more powerfully. Splendid. Thank you for sharing.

1:31 - 1:59 the simple folk are tilling the land; 2:00 far into the horizon, men on horseback can be seen riding calmly over the hill towards the humble village; 2:21 the images are now clearer, they are wearing armor, their horses are strutting; 3:02 the villagers begin to run as the men take out their swords and swing violently as their horses now pick up speed
Mit Ottorino Respighi geschah bei mir wie mit Dimitri Schostakovich :"Liebe auf den ersten Blick".Keiner von beiden hat mich enttäuscht.Ich komme wieder auf sie zurück!
A lot of people shy away from Respighi and his music because they think he was a fascist, when in truth he only did the bare minimum of sympathizing with Mussolini's regime in order to keep composing. Really, he hated politics, but he still has some of the same stigma as Wagner's works.
One of Respighi's champions and personal friends was was the conductor Arturo Toscanini who publicly criticised the Mussolini regime, he was assaulted by fascist sympathisers for his views. It doesn't seem likely that Respighi had fascistic views himself, if anything he distanced himself from politics. Nonetheless the stigma does seem to have stuck sadly. An underrated composer, there's so much more to his output than Fountains and Pines ( both of which I love incidentally!)
One of my favorite composers - and this is my favorite piece !

Thanks to Y.T. we can now discover neglected works from this prolific composer. One of the most talented orchestrators without question.
Just listened to all four movements non stop. Such an amazing, underrated piece of music by Respighi. Thanks for posting it.
I'm just marvelled and filled with awe to hear such beautiful music. :o And so well performed. I need the CD !

As like Gustav Holst it was a precursor of film music composers. This track is Perfect for a classic film like "ben hur"

The same was said about Richard Strauss
