My love of this game (and the fact that I already own two eBay-purchased copies of the original edition) requires that I comment on this video. GLADIATORS IN AN ARENA FOREVER
one thing I do appreciate is the effort you put into your instructions and setups. i.e. willingness to do who knows how many long takes it requires to get the proper dice rolls that showcase what you're trying to teach. lol
I LOVE this game. I just play with a bowl and a bunch of my own d6s. I've also come up with a ton of different dumb mini expansions that make the game even more interesting. super fun!
I introduced STRIKE to a friend last week, and she beat me IN ONE TURN. I got an empty arena after her turn, rolled 9 dice, got 4 X's, and no matches. When she saw the other games recorded, she wanted to sign the box lid too, to commemorate her amazing win!
I have the old version from a while ago. Mine has the gold interior. Love this game. My game group loves it too. Easy and fast to play at the end of a game night.
So glad this one got a re-reprint (after the original 2012 game, and the spiritual reprint Impact: Battle of Elements in 2018). I loved the original but could never get my hands on a copy...going to pick up the new edition ASAP!
Super fun game with exciting moments and thanks for the tutorial! Something interesting I noticed from this tutorial. I traded for strike about a month ago and got the 2016 French edition. Dice still in English fortunately ;) But in that edition all the dice counts per player are increased by 1 compared to this edition. 9 dice per player in a 2 player game, 8 per player in a 3 player game and so on. I wonder why that change was made. Maybe this edition comes with less dice? Mine has 31 total. Or maybe to speed up the game time? Just something interesting I noticed.
I knew that Rodney was looking forward to creating a tutorial vid for this game based on his social media. "Sending gladiators into the arena" theme for such an abstract game solidifies the notion. Maybe the matching yellow-plaid shirt helped too. xD Thanks for the video! :)
Hi. Around 6:43 you roll two dice for a players turn. The dice were a 2 and an X. If that was the case ... you would remove the X. You now have one 2. Are you out of the game at that point ? Or does the 2 match with itself ?
You would remove the X, and then the 2 would be left, and since there aren't any dice matching, and they have no dice left to roll, they would be eliminated. Hope that helps!
This game (the Impact: Battle of Elements version) has been a hit with every group I've introduced it to. Hardcore boardgamers have loved it as a filler, little kids have lost their minds over it, and with non-gamers we've made it in to a drinking game.
Thanks for the excellent review as always. Like others have said, I hope this gets re-printed. It costs $60+ right now in Canada, if you can even find it.
I just checked the rules of my copy (French) and it says we can move the dice (still not stack or change value though) in the arena before a roll and not only turn the arena. Also for the case when dice don't lie flat in the arena we have to re-roll them outside the arena. Just minor differences. Great game, great video.
This is a bar-game in Denmark called "bakke" (tray) because it is played in a serving tray and 6 dice per player. One difference is that you try to get rid of your dice instead of gaining them. When you pick up dice you have to take as many sips as there are dice. Oh yea, and you can only use one hand for handling the dice. Leaving the other free for your beverage. Also note, they were definitely just dice 😉
I just don't understand the very beginning part. 2 players so start with 8 but then you said to roll a die. Does each person roll another die not a part of the 8?
Are you referring to this part? If so, can you let me know which part of that is unclear, and I'll do my best to assist: th-cam.com/video/8O74CgPtPps/w-d-xo.html
@@WatchItPlayed we played last night and it made more sense. I was questioning if each person would grab one of the extra die to roll. I see where one person does so on their turn there is a die there for a possible match. Fun game.
I'm not sure the regular version is available in Canada yet. The Harry Potter version can be played like regular strike though, just change what the die faces represent.
What’s the rule when it’s your turn and you only have one die left and none is in the arena and you have to go all in? You obviously can’t match anything. I’m guessing you just have to throw it in and you’re out?
Interesting game, not our sort of game TBH. But I can see the appeal as a party game or family game. I think it would be fun to play with someone like you that was just caution to the wind!

That roll at 6:20 was absolutely incredible!!!!
A stroke of good fortune!

I have that copy too!
6:23 holy smokes, what are the chances?
These are the kinds of wild, unexpected outcomes you can expect in this game :)
The probability of getting 3 different sets of 3-of-a-kind with a single roll of 9 dice is about one-third of one percent.
I couldn’t believe that roll!!! I was like “no freaking way!!!”
kudos once again to the Watch It Played stylist!
Thanks for noticing :) Now, if I could just get my hair to match.
I didn’t even finished to watch this video and went straight to purchase the game online. Thank you!

Interesting that they’ve rowed back a whole bunch of the complications of later versions and brought back the oval arena.

Lots and lots of practice.
You needed the "spare" hand for that box flip. But all that people will remember throughout history. Is Rodney is still undefeated on the box flip.

Thank you kindly :)
During your next live show, you should play Strike in your fancy gladiator arena with Luke or Andrea (or both)!
It would be ideal with 3, but Andrea doesn't live at home anymore (all grown up!)

The original English version had rules like that too. I am not disappointed to see them removed in this newer version (personal preference).
Just got the game delivered today for New Years Eve thanks to ur review. Are u allowed to throw multiple dice during a turn?
Not at the same time. You always toss one die at a time. Have a great time playing and happy New Year!

Yep! Only matches force you to end your turn.

So just to clarify, does the first player have to go all in?
No, because the game always begins with 1 die already in the arena.
6:18 Sorcery, witchcraft!!!
Is noone going to mention how often he motioned in a counter clockwise direction as he was saying turns proceed clockwise?
Hey Jake, I'm not seeing it. From where I was sitting at the table, I was motioning that turns go to my left, which would be a clockwise direction.
Love this!
If you play against Luke You have a very slim chance of winning when it comes to dice games

You can't pass, you always have to toss in at least 1 die.
