  • If you want to know how to control the court with your forehand like Federer then you need an inside-out forehand like Federer. In this video I'm going to teach you how the use and hit the forehand inside out shot like Roger Federer so you can dictate play on the court next time you play.

This is by far the best tennis training channel on youtube. The explanations are so logical and clear. And I'm so happy to see a forehand drill I can practice by myself. Great work Kevin.

Man I wish we had these videos 15 years ago, I would have been a better player.
Thanks for the tips. I will still practice this for sure.

This video is absolutely brilliant ! In so many words, this is exactly what I tell my wife ( someone new to tennis) : just because there's a hash mark in the middle of the court, that doesn't mean you need to stand right there. You can stand wherever you want.
That said, I think Kevin could use this example to hone in on a simple practice idea : developing both the forehand and backhand. In a previous video, Kevin said something which is so true and insightful. Coaches and teachers will have you working on four or five different things instead of just working on and polishing one thing. This can easily result in you not improving anything. This is so true with so many things in life.
So, what you do is start off by clarifying how tennis is essentially three things : serve, forehand and backhand. At the recreational level, at least 90% of players do not have an effective serve. They simply just get the ball over the net, even those with some pace. So for beginners (or really anybody) you're generally never going to have to worry about your opponent (unless we're talking about 4.5 and up)having an effective serve. That's good news.
So now you just simply emphasize the importance of developing a really good forehand. And this video (along with the windshield wiper motion and a few essential tips for good forehand form) is a great example of how you can do it. Simply put in the time where all you do are hit forehands like this. If you need to run around the ball, that's exactly what you do, just like this video illustrates.
Do not work on your backhand until you get the forehand down is not a bad idea. (I guarantee you, this is a rule that almost nobody follows). Now,once the forehand is looking good and ready for competition, you just simply do the same exact thing for the backhand.
Hit everything with your backhand. No forehands ! Even if you have to run around the ball, that's exactly what you'll do. Apply that 70-30 ratio rule or quite honestly, something like an 85-15. Make it fun. Make it challenging. But it's totally doable. Even if you can't run around the ball, just let the ball go. This could be a great overall learning experience for your overall feel for the court. You just simply follow the same logic. To develop your backhand, just put in the time and repetitions where all you do are hit backhands.

One skill builds on another. It is completely stupid to work on only your forehand. Emphasize one stroke over another yes. Its a moving game not a hitting game.

I'd just add a few points in the way this is described.
    1. "Building the point." It's not about hitting "highlight reel" shots every time, but you can run your opponent ragged, wait for the central / short ball, and then put it in the opposite corner.
    2. Dimensions: the net is 3 feet high at the center, as opposed to 3.5 feet at the sideline. The court is 78 feet long, however on the hypotenuse it is 82.5 feet. Between these 2 dimensions, you have an additional margin of safety (I tend to think its about 20%) as opposed to hitting up the line.
    3. Hitting through the tramlines. I want to see the shots passing, after one bounce in the court, through the tramlines at the back of the court. This means, your opponent has been pulled wide. Note, I'm NOT talking about hitting it a million miles an hour, just positioning the ball, and therefore your opponent out of the court. If this can be done with a heavy shot, all the better, because many players will try (rightly or wrongly), to wait for that high ball to apex, and then drop into the hitting zone. For a shot that has been angled so much, this means they will be even further behind the baseline, and wide, since your shot has been hit on an angle.
    4. It's a game of chess. Think about MOVING your opponent, not blasting winners.

Love to hold the racket and keep the guy guessing if I'm going inside out or inside in. When I go 3 or 4 times inside out and the whip a inside in forehand when he's thinking I'm going back inside out that's a better feeling than a service ace. Usually!

The following is dumb and irrelevant to your lesson content (your content is really good and much appreciated), but from a video editing point of view, it looks weird when you cut to the side angle camera shot while using about the same size frame of you in the shot as the frontal angle. To me, it almost looks like a mistake (I know it's not a mistake). Instead, if you think you're too long on the same talking head shot, speaking straight to the camera and you feel it's visually boring, instead try using your editing software to cut in to a slightly tighter shot of yourself from the same frontal camera angle, so it's just a quick cut to a tighter shot from the same frontal angle while you just keep talking, then just cut back to the original wider angle. This will create a visual break in your video for the audience and will also create an emphasis on any point your making while also eliminating the "where the heck did that side shot come from?' thing. I know you've seen this. It's actually a commonly used edit technique for TH-cam explainer videos and looks very professional when timed correctly. Just a thought. Thanks for all you do.

you try teaching tennis by words instead of showing real hitting the ball. I mean all of you clips take 98% in words and 2 % in action. Feels like learning tennis by reading a book. Man, reduce80% of your words and SHOW YOUR ACTION FROM MANY DIFFERENT ANGLES. we learn all sports by action and copying as the couach shows. Sick and tired of words words words endless words...
