1. Read Matthew 1:18-19. Here we read about Joseph’s plan not to marry Mary when he found out she was pregnant with a baby that was not his. It was a big deal to break off a betrothal-so big that Matthew actually calls it a “divorce”, as if they were already married.
2. Read Luke 1:56. If you are eagle-eyed you might have noticed that Mary only stayed with Elizabeth for “about three months” - so why does Joseph say that she’s been away for three and a half? Well, we have to take into account travelling time: it would have been coming up for four months altogether. It’s around that time that babies in the womb grow big enough to make their mother’s baby bump begin to be noticeable.
