Dear gearheads, my apologies for the sound quality! When I was editing the footage I discovered that the mic of the GoPro has issues.. Apparently it's a known problem with GoPro camera's.. I still hope you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching!
I bought MX5 today, I'm 6'4 (194cm) tall. If you are not sure if you will fit inside being a tall guy - yes you will! I loved this car after the first turn it's just unbelievable fun to drive!
I’m 6’6” and love my NB1 even with the top up. I could *really* use the foamectomy however. But until then, removal of the sun visors does wonders for tall driver forward visibility.
Man I was thinking that with all of these rage comic faces this video would have been made circa 2012. I was amazed to see this was made only 7 years ago.
To cut the foam I used an old long meat cuting knife that I heated up until the metal became blue. It cuted it like butter without making a mess. But protect ur lungs from the fumes
Yes you can do this, and if you really don’t like it, it’s reversible because you always have the option of putting the foam back into place. Don’t know what David is talking about..
Well done, thanks! I even liked the music (normally not a big fan of the music in YT vids). I typed in "miata seat mod" and this vid was at the top of the list. All very cool. I have long known that Miata is the right choice in so many ways, when choosing a small sports car for the real world of public roads, speed limits, and financial limits. For the track, add a turbo if you must. But like you, I am tall and my legs are very long. I just don't fit comfortably and can't see out as well as I should. The foamectomy gives me hope that I can finally enjoy Miata goodness. It would be a lot more work, but to really do this perfectly, it might be worthwhile to construct a simple hot wire cutter with shaped wooden blocks for a precise and consistent cut across the whole surface.
Well done. Thanks for the tips. I suggest trying an electric meat carving knife -- the reciprocating blades make a clean smooth cut, with minimal effort. I like the idea of keeping and marking foam.
i will probably do a foamectomy on my miata soon and i checked a couple of videos, but i really liked yours and the idea to remove some foam under the seat! i will probably remove some in the back too... great video :)
Maybe I have more fat in my butt so it doesn't matter but I definately took more Foam out the bottom and got 1.5-2" of drop on my seats. I also just completely removed the back lumbar piece on both the seats, there is still foam behind it. Personally I like being deeper in the seat and feeling more secure, and at least for me the seat is not less comfortable than it was stock, more so for me in fact and I it makes you feel much less cramped in the car!
@@MiataMods Just done it myself and it feels awesome! I have to lose a bit from my butt, cause it seems to be a bit wider than the pan, as i feel the sides of the seat being higher than the rest :D
Thanks dude for your video! I just bought a miata a week ago and since i am fairly tall dude (190) foamectomy seemed to be the first important mod to do. And thanks to you i did not ruin the seat, but instead i did it nicely and neatly. And it took me altogether about half an hour. Thanks!
Had a knife like yours and did it today without messing things up as always lol Thanks a lot, looking forward to actually driving around it to feel what it's like :)
This is a pretty great and comprehensive video. Normally, I never liked the rage comics/rage face meme, but the one you pulled when you said "haggard" at 14:33 made me laugh.
Thanks! Some people like the rage faces, some people don't and that's fine, this is my style of editing and I like them ☺️ It's good to hear that it made you laugh! I hope the video was helpful too 👍
Wow, really fast reply. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I laughed at that part because I thought you were taking a shot at Haggard Garage, who I really don't like.
what up bro! lost your TH-cam channel after switching phones but I found you nice foamectomy on the seats plan on doing that to mine as well glad to see you still working on the Miata!
My experience is that the seat is MORE comfortable after the mod. Sounds a little counter-intuitive that taking away padding can improve comfort, but since your butt sits a little lower, the backs of your thighs get more support from the seat bottom. Some pressure is shifted away from your tailbone. My buddy is 6'4", and he modded his seat for the height reduction. But when I sat in his car, I knew I wanted it for my 5'10" ass. LOL I recommend it to everyone, whether you're tall or not. I've done a trip as long as 3 hours, and that was after a long day of autocross besides. My only soreness was my right knee (and I blame my lack of cruise control for that).
Exactly, it more comfortable! Did some roadtrips which took 8-12 hours of driving and it’s fine. So much more comfortable than any bucket or racing seat I’ve seen that has been fitted into a MX5
It's similar but not completely the same. If you use my video as a guide you should be able to do it. I guess the hardest part will be to decide were you need to cut the foam and how much you are going to remove. Just take your time, don't remove too much in one go and testfit it!
The seat pan was rusted out on mine so I cut it off and cut the foam out from there. Bottom doesn't seem to have changed much as my ass sits on the bolsters anyway lol. I just pulled the rear foam completely and that really makes a difference
@@MiataMods im 6'3" 260lbs, i did the same mods, plus i removed the foot rest by the clutch to give more leg room. Will need to replace steering wheel with a smaller one too as it still rubs my knees quite bad and prevents my hands from turning the wheel past knee height without sliding hands on wheel, also removed the door handle inside the car door card and put strap door handle instead, now knees don't get smashed between steering wheel and door everytime door is closed
