  • Gettysburg National Military Park Ranger Tom Holbrook puts on his white gloves and tells the story of a number of Civil War artifacts circa 1865. Descendants of the owner of one particular artifact, a canteen with a note attached, are present in the audience for this winter lecture at the Gettysburg Museum and Visitors Center.

This conflict was so horrible and tragic, but for Americans it should never be forgotten and I am thankful for it being publicly taught and acknowledged by current generations.

We met Ranger Holbrook in the mid 90s for a peach orchard walk. Each time we visited, we asked what battlefield walks he was doing.
North Carolina if I remember correctly?
Cheers and thanks for the fond memories 🇺🇸

Back in the early 60's my family toured the Gettysburg Battlefield. I was maybe between 10 and 14 years old. While visiting General Lee's Headquarters I found a musket hanging from the ceiling that belonged to my 2nd great grandfather. I went back as an adult mid 80's trying to find the gun but had no luck...

The US Board of Ordnance was very Conservative when a replacement for the Springfield 1903 came up in 1930 the decision was for a Semi-Automatic Rifle with a Mag Capacity of 15 rounds but in a strange decision a clip loader was adopted of 8 rounds was adopted and Henry Garand's Design was selected and we are all familiar with this weapons faults, poor mag capacity and the weight but it was the first S /Auto Rifle to be issued in huge numbers, the Soviets being the next. The Germans were still using the 5 shot K98 Rifle till 1945 and the British were still using the Lee Enfield No 2 and 3 and .303/7.7mm Rimmed Round dating from 1881 till 1968 the reason being mainly cost.

If Spencer had sold his rifle patent to Colt and they manufactured it perhaps it could have survived longer. It's quick-loading tubes made it doubly revolutionary; the tube functioned like the M1 Garand's quick-loading clip, although rounds could be loaded individually into the Spencer.
Paul Newman used a Spencer in the movie "Hombre." Many of Louis L'Amour's characters used Spencers.
Soldiers who actually used the Spencer in battle, like Colonel John T. Wilder's Lightning Brigade, swore by it.
Sherman commanded the Military Division of the Mississippi.

Ammo issued in the field for the M1 and 1903 was packaged in bandoleers, already in clips, ready to load. The M1 Magazine could be topped off with loose rounds, if you happened to have any.......it would have been faster, though, to eject the partial clip in the rifle and press in a full one; but then you would have to pocket the loose ammo or just let it fall to the ground.

Except the M1 used an en bloc clip, and spencers' quick load tubes were NOT left in the magazine. They're more like stripper clips.... but nice try. Go study

8:29 no no no..... you guys should REALLY watch the "InRangeTV" or "forgotten weapons" episode on this rifle if you want to learn more
    .
the "speed loaders" were simply thin, LONG, metal tubes
they were awkward to carry.... therefor they got in the way.....and got bent and dinged a lot
    .
a very small dent/ding will cause the rounds to hang up
so instead of 7 rounds falling into the "magazine"..... you might only get 2
    .
    .
plus.... you have to find a way to carry these long metal tubes.... being able to DIVE for cover and go prone
with out dinging/denting/ or bending them
    .
    .
its sorta like the issue with carrying Drum mags for the PPSH....... or the "pan" mags for the DP27 (both being Russian WW2 SMG/MGs)
they are awkward things.... very hard to design "web-gear" for them (web gear = ammo belts)
    .
this is why the PPSH in the late war ended up using mostly 35 round "stick" mags
MUCH easier to make a carrying pouch on the uniform
a TON easier and quicker to make
and a LOT more durable and reliable than a drum mag

    • @kainhall
      @kainhall 2 ปีที่แล้ว

also.... these "speed loader tubes" were VERY rare
      .
id bet 100% of troops in combat never had the speed-tubes..... or tried them out.... and IMMEDIATELY threw them away
in favor of simply grabbing ammo from a big pouch..... and loading them 1 or 2 at a time
      .
it actually might be quicker to grab round... load.... grab round... load
      VS
try to get a dented up "speed tube" to load all 7 in one smooth action

  • @kainhall
    @kainhall 2 ปีที่แล้ว

5:00 either "InRangeTV" or "forgotten weapons" (channels here on TH-cam) did a test with a Henry and a Spencer
    .
while the Spencer can shoot a more powerful round..... its VERY slow and awkward to work the lever and chamber the next round
IIRC.... they came to the conclusion that the higher capacity and fire rate of the Henry...... as well as its faster, less complex loading system made it FAR better than the Spencer
    .
    .
like... you can almost get the same rate of fire with a trapdoor...... which is a single shot
and the trapdoor fires a MUCH MUCH more powerful round
    .
    .
    .
the Henry was the AR15 of its day
low power round.... but a lot of ammo and fast follow up shots
    .
the Spencer would be like a M14
pretty powerful.... but lower ammo count.... and slower follow up shots due to the higher recoil upsetting your sight picture
    .
and the Trapdoor would be like a 1903 Springfield bolt action
    VERY powerful round.... almost overkill
    VERY low ammo count
and VERY slow follow up shots.... due to recoil and having to break your sight picture to work the bolt
    .
however.... if you hit someone with that 30-06.... hit them ANYWHERE..... they arnt going to have a very fun day
and are probably going to stop shooting back at you..... if not die out-right

  • @kainhall
    @kainhall 2 ปีที่แล้ว

8:10 it was probably because he didnt cock the hammer..... before working the lever
    .
the "manual of arms" is.... shoot.... cock hammer to half cock (or fully)... push lever down with GREAT force (and even then, you will probably have to shake the old shell out)
then close the lever.... and if not already... go to full cock
    finally.... aim and fire

    • @kainhall
      @kainhall 2 ปีที่แล้ว

awe yes..... just like the german mausers.... you cant close the bolt on an empty mag.... (with out pushing the mag follower down)
      .
this was to prevent people..... high on Adrenalin..... working the bolt.....and shooting empty chambers at people (aka, even worse than a blank)
when you are excited..... you dont feel recoil..... so you dont know if your gun is empty or not
      .
      .
      EXAMPLE
      a 91/30 Russian rifle
a MG 42 is shooting at your squad
      you fire your 5 rounds.....
      you fire your 6th..... 7th....8th..... 9ths...... 12th.... ETC
      .
but because you are so "high"..... you dont realize.....after 5 rounds..... the rifle stopped making a LOUD noise.... and kicking you in the shoulder
      .
      .
      while the 8mm Mauser.....
a russian DP-27 is shooting at you
      1....2....3....4.....5....
"what the hell.... i cant close the bolt.... i better look at the action and see whats going on..... OH CRAP!!! im out of ammo!!!"
      .
      .
      .
the floor plate of the mag spring (aka, the thing that pushes the bullets up.... to be fed into the chamber by the bolt)...... gets in the way of the bolt
you CANT close the bolt..... unless you press that floor plate down a bit with your fingers
      .
      .
      .
and, again..... this is to prevent VERY excited people from THINKING they are shooting their rifle
when, in fact, all they are doing is getting a click on an empty chamber
      .
      .
in the revolutionary / civil war..... we have found guns with ball.... powder.... ball.... powder....ball..... powder.... ball..... powder....ball ETC
      .
he forgot to pour the powder in before he rammed the FIRST bullet/ball home
so he caps the nipple.... and fires
      .
because he is so excited/scared...... he doesnt realize it was MUCH quieter..... with MUCH less recoil
so he reloads..... this time correctly
      .
but because the first ball/bullet is still in the barrel..... the primer cant get its flame to the powder charge
you are basically trying to shoot people with an unloaded rifle
      .
      .
      .
like... even shooting a modern rifle at a deer..... you dont feel the recoil
while when shooting at a target.... you feel 110% of that recoil
      .
and its because you are excited to shoot that 5x5 BIG! buck
you get "buck fever"...... (aka, Adrenalin)
      .
      .
      .
and im serious.... when shooting at a target.... even during a match
part of your mind is still focused on that recoil (which might make you flinch.... and miss the target)
      .
but when shooting at a deer...... or intruder in your home
your "lizard brain" kicks in..... and ALL you are thinking about is food / survival
      .
you could shoot a 50 BMG sniper rifle from the shoulder..... and not feel an ounce of recoil

If there is "dispute" concerning a "lean" towards Union Artifacts and overall the historic perspective.....remember the Legally Constituted Government and Army of the United States of America Union was victorious at both Gettysburg and the War. I do support espousing the confederate perspective and displaying artifacts if it is clearly stated (continually) that the southern states were in an illegal rebellion against the Lawfully-elected Federal government and that former members of the US Government and commissioned officer who resigned or "went south" to serve the "Confederacy" were traitors....TRAITORS!!!! Just calling them rebels doesn't really ring true. This isn't a "both sides" went to war issue. The so-called confederacy, their government leadership and soldiery, committed treason. No Traitor against the United States, regardless of their prowess or deeds, holds a Medal of Honor

I'm sure they destroy Confederate things. I refuse to go to new Orleans anymore, because of the statue bull shit. It has made me not like most blacks. I grew up with them, and never had a problem with either. But since all they want to do is take history down from the south I dislike them.
You can call me whatever, but leave the dead alone, leave history alone, leave people alone, leave everything alone and people will respect you. Take things away and no one likes you! Be kind to others and you will get back. You don't see white people taking down MLK statues. You don't see us taking down MLK street signs.
I am always perplexed at the notion of blacks that think white people hate them now. It was whites that gave thier lives so they could be free. It was there own people who loaded them up on ships as well as Portuguese and British.
The south succeeded not all on slavery but they didn't like the government, but most can't understand that part either.

16:30 ya... i prefer "native"....... Indian can get confusing.... because of people from India
but 99.98% of the time.... the context tells you if they are talking about "feather or red dot" Indians
    .
PS.... any little shell band of the Chippewa tribe watching this video??
we FINALLY got federal recognition 2 or 3 years ago
    .
and are now FINALLY getting our money from being SCAMMED by the US gov't
they gave us 6 cents per acre..... which they told us was "fare market value"
    .
meanwhile.... other tribes that actually fought back, and killed a few white dudes got like 2 dollars per acre....
we went along with the gov't.... knowing our tribe was too small to win...... and got scammed because of it
    .
    .
also.... we were hunting in Canada when the treaty setting up the Rez was signed
when we came back..... the Gov't said "sorry..... try asking the CA gov't"
    .
    .
and if you think the USA was nasty with Indians......
Canada is STILL way way way way worse..... even to this day

    • @thejdogcool
      @thejdogcool ปีที่แล้ว

Oh please. Every "native" in Canada gets their whole life handed to them by the government from white peoples' tax dollars. Also, "native" doesn't make any sense because Americans are "native" to this continent too. Our ethnicity didn't come up in Europe; all our unique traditions were born here.
