There's something incredibly amusing about a guy revealing he's a ghost by disappearing in front of your eyes... and then immediately popping back in because he forgot something.
Hey, Late Homework dev here~ Wow!! Thanks so much for checking out and covering my little jam game Nitro. There's definitely a few rough edges and some tiny quirks I'm hoping to have ironed out as I continue to work on it, but I'm chuffed you enjoyed it all the same! Cheers ✌
If you guys want short horrorish games I strongly recommend trying out milk inside a bag of milk and it’s sequel milk outside a bag of milk. Also, critters for sale, not a horror, but incredibly weird experience.
Rental was pretty neat for the little slice it was. Pretty neat proof-of-concept. Especially the first-person maze sequence, which gave me flashbacks to the Windows maze screensaver and Ken's Labyrinth. I need to find more games that have that kind of vibe and control scheme, where something is stalking you but doesn't straight-up beeline for you, instead prowling around waiting for the perfect moment to pounce. As for your "dream horror game", judging from the descriptors you've thrown out, Tower of Tears might be close to what you're looking for.
An animal crossing life sim combined with Silent Hill sounds awesome. Maybe during the day you can do the typical AC stuff like fish, catch bugs, socialize, run errands, shop, etc with minimal to no scary things. Then when night comes you can still do most of those things but it's more dangerous and spooky with monsters roaming, but you can get better rewards and catch fish and bugs that only come out at night. I'm sold
Really interested in you exploring this genre further! I think “cozy scary” is a genre people are just now realizing exists as a collective, and I want more of it. Voices of The Void falls under cozy scary to me-it’s not cute, but it’s…comfy. I played a lot of Nancy Drew games as a kid that I think fall under cozy scary. Big, quiet mansions, lots of puzzles to dig into, a warm fire with a raging storm outside…I loved that shit.
Her name is Hornet! Sometimes when I pick her up she rubs her face on mine. She likes me a lot and is always doing these weird roll flips into the walls like a tornado trying to get my attention. She's real weird and funny. I got two other cats also, Blinx, the dumb orange cat and Mr Pickles, lanky black cat (very shy and usually stays upstairs, but the other two show up in vids sometimes since they like hanging out down in my office during the day) one time I was filming a controller demonstration on this nice little foldout green screen i got, and she randomly climbs up on top, I think it's in one of the psychonauts videos. If you move cords in front of her at all she'll go nuts, like ridiculous reflexes tryna grab them. She's def the one of the three who would have no trouble surviving on her own. (Blinx would def die in like 2 mins trying to play with a coyote or trying to jump over a speeding car) Sometimes she'll accidentally claw me when playing because she gets way too intense about it. Which sucks, because her claws are sharper than any blade I've ever encountered. (She keeps them in good shape throughout each day) Though she does otherwise make a real good effort not to cut me with her claws! She sucked at it as a kitten (I was kinda scared of her knife hands when we first got her not gonna lie) but over time she grew more conscious of it and now she's really good about it. Which is an unreal feeling, this lil animal being like "aw shit gotta figure out how to not stab this dude" lol . She also kills all the spiders it rules
I like the idea of you doing more cute style games in general. It helps me get a good idea of what games I can choose from. Your reviews are great at explaining the game at hand, which is nice. A great example was Corn Kidz, which you reviewed. I would never have picked the game up if it wasn't for your review
Not cute, but I really liked Northern Journey. It's a game in a medieval fantasy universe with a lot of inspiration from Lovecraft and the Scandinavian folklore. It's not really a horror game, but it's very close. The atmosphere and artistic direction are really cool: both bizarre and surreal, but also rather calm and cozy (most of the time ; it can be a bit fast paced too). 3:15 100% agreed. If you just take a moment, or even take a while to establish characters and get us invested in them, we're all the more concerned when bad things start happening. Cuz we like these characters and now they're in danger. Seems simple, and it is simple, but sometimes this simple detail is forgotten or not taken as seriously as it needs to be. Character development is huge. I also would really like seeing more videos like this~. Multiple small indie games that couldn't justify their own video, being put into 1 video. I like it.
This conversely goes with making me interested in the world. One of the reasons Half Life 1 and Doom 3 stand out to me so much is because you get a glimpse into how the world you inhabit functions BEFORE everything goes topsy turvy.
I really missed these videos. I started watching you because of your weird indie horror game/RPG Maker game videos, and while I enjoy your videos about 3D platformers and bigger team/budget horror games, I'm not always in the mood to watch them. If it's a weird looking indie game like these though, I always drop what I'm doing to watch. I hope you do more of these in the future, I've found out about some of my favorite games because of those videos.
Something I want to mention about the whole map drawing thing, particularly for me-I really enjoyed drawing my own map for the first Zelda, but that game lets you pause without bringing up a menu, giving you a clear view of the current screen. That makes it really easy to draw a map for that game, but unfortunately most games don’t have a pause like that now(I think, I haven’t been playing many new games). Particularly I remember when I heard that Dark Souls doesn’t have a map, I got excited about the idea of drawing it until I remembered it’s impossible to pause in that game, and I doubt there would ever be a chance to breathe and draw a map.
Dark Souls enemies stay dead until you manually reset the environment at a bonfire, so there's actually a lot of quiet time in those games! You should try drawing a map, especially with the first one since every environment is directly connected to each other there. (3 is a lot more linear, but still has potential.)
@@MegaOverclocked The game does some aspects and themes regarding sexuality for horror, but like, its all meant for horror not 'enjoyment'. Fear and hunger is as much of a hentai as berserk is, if you are familiar with the latter.
Rental was really neat playing it, it was funny though cause like I was more scared of what might happen than anything actually in the game. Was a bit silly in hindsight. I do appreciate these kinds of games though cause they almost work like a branching point for people who aren't great with horror like me. I tried out subway midnight (after watching your review) and that lead me to finally playing Resident Evil 1 this year. I even starting making a sort of survival horror game cause I liked what I played and the feelings it left me with.
I really dig the character designs and aesthetic of both of these! I came across rental by accident and it looked interesting so I'm really glad you talked about it. I love your indie horror videos.
You got so much better as a youtuber over the years. You were already amazing, but this video is pure deliciousness, I love your videos. Thank you so much for your content.
Eo is kinda scary tbh. The foes and music along with some of the descriptions are kinda creepy. Like eo3 when your chasing Olympia and the fish ambush u.
@@minakoarisato1506The FOEs are such good templates for horror monsters. When done well, they can make avoiding the monster very stressful and more difficult than simply running or hiding, where you might need to weave through them to progress with one poorly judged step meaning death. And while Persona Q definitely did NOT do FOEs well (movement maybe, but the consequence side just was NOT it), Yukiko’s quest had a brilliant scare that only an EO style game could give. Hard fight done, you walk the few extra steps to get the quest over with before you go heal and save…and then the lights go out. And you look down at the bottom screen. And your beat up party is completely surrounded by FOEs. Please don’t kill me please don’t kill me please don’t kill me…

I actually played rental some time ago, it wasn't particularly intense for me, I mostly found it charming. I also really appreciated how short it was. Cute game.
You convinced me to get a steamdeck instead of a ps5 a little while back, and boy am I TWICE as happy after recent news. just added Rental to my library.
I love the way you speak about games, I first discovered your channel through your review on Psychonauts 2 when it first came out and I ended up binging all the videos, even the old ones. You have definitely grown, I don't mean numbers but for example in very early videos you described games by comparing them to other games a lot, saying something like "it's like Banjo Kazooie mixed with Rayman 2 and a dash of Gex style humor" and I remember feeling incredibly confused because I knew nothing about those games except for their titles 🤣 I remember me and my brother really wanted to pool our allowance to buy a new shiny PS2 and our parents strictly forbade it... we played a bunch of early PC games when we were very little that came with dad's cutting edge Macintosh IIfx but afterwards we weren't given or allowed to buy any video games for many years. Our cousins had all kinds of cool games they allowed us to play whenever we came over, like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Mortal Kombat 4, The Sims 2, Tomb Raider 3, Rayman 2 demo. Meanwhile me and my brother only had very cheap stuff that our parents deemed appropriate 🤣Neighbours From Hell, Hugo 3D Adventure, Original War, Hamster Heroes, and our personal favourites The Neverhood and Beyond Good and Evil (which we played and finished many times despite not speaking an ounce of English) As for recommendations, if you read this far or skipped... ahh I wouldn't call it a horror game despite some elements I won't spoil, but I think you might enjoy Felvidek a lot. It's a short RPG with unique artstyle and fun writing that only takes a couple hours to beat.
Definitely trying these games out tonight!! I really hope you cover more stuff like this I need some cozy horror in my life. Flesh Blood and Concrete is a current cozy-horror favorite of mine but I think it’s cozy for me bc of cultural background more than anything
I would love a horror game that's a really slow burn and presents itself as a normal cute wholesome game or better yet a game where the horror elements are hidden and you can go through the entire game without seeing any of it but one wrong turn throws you into a horror adventure.
I'm more of a console guy than PC guy, but since they are technically free, I might get them one day for my laptop. They both look cool. Nice to see Hornet's doing well! I actually recently filled out an adoption application to get a new cat since my old cat Woodsy sadly passed away back in late 2022 at 15 years old.
Or I could just get cozy watching NitroRad videos! Still, I love these horror videos! My friend loves playing them, so whenever you bring attention to them, I always recommend them to her!
Sodaraptor has so much skill and "gets it so much" that I believe if they got support, they would be able to create multiple PS1 silent hill style horror games. There's so much potential there
Rental was put on my radar a few months ago and I found it pretty fun! The maze was a little tough to maneuver but I think overall I enjoyed my time with it, especially when it doesn't cost anything. I don't think its really what you're looking for with cute horror, but have you ever heard of Buddy Simulator 1984? That one might be up your alley!
I barely see anyone covering this game, but I can't recommend Buddy Simulator 1984 enough! It's the "silly rpg gone horror-ish" type of game, kind of scratches the petscop's "ugly cuteness" part.
Doing those lightning round review videos but for indie horror games would be great! Especially since your stuff with the indie platformers helped me find Cavern of Dreams, I'd be totally down to see like, "Indie Horrors Vol" videos!
I played a resident evil-like game last year called Evil Tonight that kept popping up on some underrated switch game lists and it was pretty fun. It felt like a good survival horror game that leaned a little more on the action side. It's $15 and I would definitely recommend
Playing as cute characters in horror games just remind me that you're just a little innocent character where you probably can't do a lot to defend yourself from the enemies, which means you can only run, hide, or die (adding some extra atmosphere to the game)
Please review Soda Raptor's Hypnogogia: Boundless Dreams if you haven't already. Amazing chill vibes in that game! And I love the PS1 + Dreamcast style.
HOLY HECK I LOVE YOU CAT!!!!! BIG FELLA!! HUGE LAD!!! WOOOOO 👏👏👏👏👏👏 Oh also the video is pretty great. I feel like you put the feeling of cozy horror into words pretty well.
I love these PS1 style indie horror games. They capture the essence of classic 90s survival horror titles of the past, and make it modern. This is why indie games are succeeding this year, while AAA games are flopping. Their work alone shows that how much love they have of video games.
Still gotta play through that one! Always wanted to since trying the N64 version on an emulator way back in highschool. I got the PS1 version to play properly on a console in college, but soon into playing it realized that version is unplayably slow and glitchy, oops!
@@NitroRad as someone who played it back in the windows XP days and now the remastered version, do *Not* play it on hard mode, and prepare for lots of backtracking. Other than that, hope you enjoy it! Been watching you since your OFF review and your game recommendations are always on point!
Hey Nitro, I hope you consider keeping tabs on Abiotic Factor and consider doing a solo playthrough when it's complete. I'd be really excited to hear your take on the horror aspects of the game.
Did you have acold recording this? Your voice sounds a little rough in this video but great choices of games overall. Definitely makes me want to try them out.
I found Paratopic to be a short cozy horror game with nice aesthetics. Also Vaccine Rebirth, it's like a bite sized roguelike Resident Evil, tank controls, fixed camera, spooky ps1 mansion, you got it
This year, I noticed that I tend to get too busy during October to enjoy Halloween festivities, so this is gonna be perfect for my Septemberween Spooktacular! 👻💀🎃🕸️🕷️

The character designs of this game remind me so much of Miffy, so I wonder if maybe the tone is influcened by it as well.

I would love a horror game that's a really slow burn and presents itself as a normal cute wholesome game or better yet a game where the horror elements are hidden and you can go through the entire game without seeing any of it but one wrong turn throws you into a horror adventure.
I will never not be exited for a new nitro rad episode
ngl I love this whole genre of horror games, they always have the most charming vibe in a way
YOUR CAT IS HUGE I LOVE IT.
I really don't get much out of horror games tbh but I always dig cat content.
There's so much potential there
Couldn't agree more on some horror games being cozy. Little goody two-shoes does a very good job of this.

Love interior worlds, so glad it got a mention from my favorite horror creator
Nice, thanks!
Great work Nitro.
I loved Rental. Haven't played the other, waiting for a steam release... BUT JAMES!! PLAY GO! GO! HAMSTER CHEF!! PLEASE!!! >.

Yesss! Interior Worlds is fantastic! And he updated it fairly recently with more content!
I played a resident evil-like game last year called Evil Tonight that kept popping up on some underrated switch game lists and it was pretty fun. It felt like a good survival horror game that leaned a little more on the action side. It's $15 and I would definitely recommend
I love ur horror game vids!
BIG FELLA!! HUGE LAD!!! WOOOOO 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Oh also the video is pretty great.
Oh hell yeah you have Shadow Man in your library!
If its not horror games, its platformers. And that one time with Canadian cartoons, which I wouldn't mind more of.
another great video and wishlisted Interior Worlds after playing the fun demo!
Hey Nitro, I hope you consider keeping tabs on Abiotic Factor and consider doing a solo playthrough when it's complete. I'd be really excited to hear your take on the horror aspects of the game.
Omg! New video about horror games! So excited
Hornet is very cute and she needs to be in more videos.
Maybe you should try Gregory horror show if you want material for a campy horror game.
Did you have acold recording this?
Your voice sounds a little rough in this video but great choices of games overall.
Definitely makes me want to try them out.
Rental especially looked fun. If it comes to console I'll definitely be there.
Yo these two look so cool 🤩
Definitely gotta check em out when the spooky itch hits me. 😄
I am here for Nitro Rad being a cat dad
I found Paratopic to be a short cozy horror game with nice aesthetics.
Also Vaccine Rebirth, it's like a bite sized roguelike Resident Evil, tank controls, fixed camera, spooky ps1 mansion, you got it
I am totally down with a complication of cool indie horror games similar to your videos on indie platformers.
Hornet is such a pretty kitty! Is she just a regular short-hair or is she a particular breed?
15:58 Legend of Grimrock has a mode that disables the automap and makes the player fill the maps on their own.
This year, I noticed that I tend to get too busy during October to enjoy Halloween festivities, so this is gonna be perfect for my Septemberween Spooktacular! 👻💀🎃🕸️🕷️
