  • It might look just like a generic rock, but this rock is special because it doesn't even come from this planet. It's a chunk of a meteorite that came from space and it's magnetic because it's mostly made of iron and nickel.

Olivine is a really cool mineral, its primary components are silicon and oxygen, and then either magnesium or iron. How'd you end up with the beautiful cross section?
As a 9 year old boy, back around 1983, I was deeply interested in geology and would look for meteorites. I found two rocks that ticked all the boxes I knew of for a meteorite. Dense, attracted to a magnet and blackish brown with what looked like atmospheric melting.
I told my dad about it and we made a family trip to Griffith Park Observatory to get some answers. There was a professor there who looked at both and said that if the smaller, unusually shaped one turned out to be a meteorite, he'd pay me $10,000.00 for it and steered us to UCLA's geology department to have it tested.
Now my family is really excited. My sister and I are already spending the money in our heads. 10K in the early 80s was a good amount of money.
We went there and they did a porcelain scratch test and the color was brown. Magnetite. I was so deflated and it was a very long drive back home.
