Moroccan mosque in India | Moorish mosque

The Moorish mosque in Kapurthala is a specimen of a King's love for his subjects. Located in Kapurthala city of Punjab, the mosque is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, and is among the best mosques of South East Asia.
The mosque was built by Maharaja Jagatjit Singh who was the last ruler of Kapurthala. Known for his extravagant taste and involvement in developmental activities, the ruler was also popular among the subjects for his secular nature. As the majority of his subjects were Muslims, the ruler who was a Sikh himself, decided to build a mosque for his fellow beings.
The architecture and designing of the mosque are influenced by the Grand Mosque of Marrakesh in Morocco. The structure was designed by the French architect Monsieur M. Manteaux, who was also behind the designing of Jagatjit Singh's palace. The constructed of the structure started in 1927 and got over by 1930. An inscription on the mosque says that it took four years to construct the mosque.

مورش مسجد (Moorish Masjid) صوبہ پنجاب کے کپور تھلہ ضلع میں واقع ہے۔ اس مسجد کی تعمیر کپور تھلہ ریاست کے مہاراجہ جگجیت سنگھ نے کرائی تھی جو 3 سال کی کڑی محنت کے بعد 1930 میں بن کر تیار ہوئ، جو مہاراجہ کی طرف سے مسلمانوں کے لیے تحفہ تھا۔ اس مسجد میں اس وقت 6 لاکھ روپیے کا خرچ آیا تھا۔ تقسیم ہند سے پہلے کپور تھلہ میں 60 فیصد مسلمان ہوا کرتے تھے جب اس مسجد کا افتتاح ہوا تو ایک لاکھ مسلمانوں نے اس مسجد میں جمعہ کی نماز ادا کی تھی۔ اس مسجد کی بناوٹ موروکو کی مساجد کی طرز پر ہے, مہاراجہ جگجیت سنگھ مراکش گئے تو ان کو بہاں کی خوبصورت مسجد بہت پسند آئی انہوں نے ہو بہو اس کی نقل تعمیر کروائی۔ لیکن اب یہاں پر اب صرف پانچ دس مسلمان نماز ادا کرتے ہیں اور جمعہ میں تھوڑی تعداد بڑھ جاتی ہے۔
