This movie was supposed to be 2 parts. If Marvel would have let this instead of forcing them to do reshoots to wrap it up in a single movie, it could have been much better. But still there is a lot that differs from thr comic. Jean's powers activate when she witnesses her best friend Annie get hit by a car. The trauma causes her powers to activate early and she mentally experiences her best friends death. The Phoenix Force which is a cosmic entity, possessed jean and she became the dark phoenix and absorbed a sun in a neighboring galaxy This wiped out 5 billion D'Bari. The aliens in this movie. They changed the Skrulls to D'Bari after the reshoots. If you wanna see the fully realized story, I suggest watching the Xmen animated series. 5 part Phoenix Saga and 4 part Dark Phoenix Saga. This is the most comic accurate.
Just for some context, The Skrulls were originally the villains in this movie, then Disney bought Fox and changed it because they wanted to use The Skrulls in the MCU
It's not confirmed that Disney made Fox changed the aliens to Skrulls. The film had reshots before Disney finalised the purchase in March 2019. Changes and reshoots were done in 2018 when the deal was still not completed yet. The film was also originally a Part 1 so things had to be changed to turn it into a one movie thing.
There's also Mutant X(2001-2004), meant to be an X-Men show but Marvel had already sold the rights to mutants to Fox so there was a lot of legal trouble with that show
They made the same mistake with these films as DC did with the Snyderverse: They tried to speedrun comic stories, doing the pay off without bothering with the build up that made the pay off work. It's like how children tell jokes, they know what the funny punchline is, but they end up just saying the punchline and not really knowing the set up or how to lead to it, so instead of a satisfying pay off you just get a weird non sequitur. They grabbed a bunch of things that are important for the comic version of the Phoenix stories, but failed to assemble them in a form that makes sense. This is why there are aliens, why the Phoenix Force is an alien force rather than an innate part of Jean, why the Phoenix Force enters Jean on a space shuttle and so many more bits and pieces within the movie. It's a highlight reel of the Dark Phoenix story without the connective tissue that makes it a coherent story.
Already saw Deadpool & Wolverine opening night. It was awesome! That credit sequence showing everything and the behind the scenes was a try not to cry challenge for sure

Pheonix is a cosmic force not a split personality. But this is still nothing like the real story. But that's about impossible to tell without at like ten movies to build the world for it.
Xmen movies acc get this one wrong but it's still cool... The thing Jean absorbs IS the phoenix... she's just a slightly better than Charles mind melder before that
Not even Hans Zimmer could’ve saved this movie. It’s a crime the music was wasted on this movie. I felt the same the movie stated off really good but it lost me somewhere in the middle
The moment Jean absorbs the "Solar Flare" which is supposed to be the Phoenix Force is when the whole movie doesn't make sense. “Jean absorbs those solar flares and then hurls them back out into space,” explains director Simon Kinberg of the sequence shown in the above exclusive concept art. “That’s what triggers, awakens, creates this Phoenix force and voice inside her. then the Enemies invade Earth to take and harness that FORCE (the solar Flare which is supposed to be the "Phoenix Force" to create a new world for them. The way the enemy describes this FORCE is referring to the Phoenix Force which makes no sense cause Jean already has the Phoenix Force since Apocalypse, meaning it's just a solar flare.)
We can make the assumption that Jean was using her psionic bird in Apocalypse which is an ability she has in the comics within her that is a power that rivals the Phoenix Force.

@zflick The way I understood it was the firebird was just Jeans raw power. In the comics PF bonds with Jean as a child when she almost dies saving her friend and it isn't until the mission to space where is she encounters the PF for the very first time and absorbs it. My assumption is when Jean released the firebird at the end of Apocalypse the PF felt that and that's why it came over looking for Jean (it's perfect vessel).

the girl said "what are u doing" bc beast was fighting with her and the rest of magnetos team, so when beast turns and stands with the people HE was just fighting against she looks at him wondering why he's now standing with the enemy.. hence "what are you doing." he then replies, "What raven would've done," meaning he's going to fight tp protect jean even though she was the enemy. you have to think she lives out in the wilderness in a camp with magneto she knows nothing of most of beasts friends so, she's like what you stand with them for?
So also, the phoenix force in the comics was from space. I remember people hating the last stand because it did not involve space. That's why they went the space route here. Not that it necessarily made it any better, i prefered Last Stand, but at lest they were more comic accurate here.
the continuity error is where they go wrong with these movies, cause if they would do the scene having the phoenix going to her in space then how the fuck did she already have it back when fighting apocalypse I hope the people in Marvel can adapt this right cause fox had two chances and butchered both
They totally stopped caring about continuity when they shoehorned Jubilee into every other movie through different eras and she was still a teenager in all of them.
It's been awhile, but I seem to remember that the entire train sequence was shot after test audiences hated the original ending. That entire third act was rewritten and caused them to delay the release for months. EDIT: Yeah, after checking online, I was right. There also was supposed to be a fight in space at the end, but they were afraid that it would remind people of the Captain Marvel movie.
Captain Marvel was better to be honest, that space fight coulda been cool but nothing at the end coulda saved the movie in my opinion. The aliens just had no development, I don’t even know their names and apparently neither did Jessica Chastaine until after the movie released lmao 😂

It also involved the Hellfire Club (the organization that Kevin Bacon ran in First Class). They were the ones that had her turn to the dark side. Jean killed billions of people in another solar system. They obviously grounded this story on Earth and then went about making sure we got Magneto and Wolverine involved somehow. It was just a mess of a movie and didn't really please anyone.. comic book fans nor X-Men movie fans. Might have been better to split into two movies, but Fox was at the end of their lifespan. This WAS supposed to be the start of another trilogy, but that obviously never panned out.

These last few X-Men movies had potential, but they came out at a time when the MCU was red hot. They felt mediocre compared to what Marvel was giving us. Same thing with the Spiderman and Fantastic Four franchises. People didn't want half-ass comic book movies anymore.
Can’t get it done before I go see Deadpool & Wolverine tomorrow. But at one point I will. I mostly just wanted to get these main X-Men titles out of the way so I can go into Deadpool & Wolverine knowing a lot of the characters that may show up
