i feel like the problem here is, that they dont want to invest into the groovebox aspect of this synth. They stated multiple times it's not a groovebox, although they added a decent groovebox functionality. Maybe they will add good features in the future, maybe they will keep it as a synth with a sequencer.
It's kinda crossover I think, between a 4 part synth with drums and a groove box. Despite of all the issues I definitely love It. Thank you for the comment.
I guess that’s a problem for some people, I assume you looked into a midi channel controller? I just never had a reason to. You’re absolutely right in bringing up this format though, it’s a great way to get a firmware update to keep the customer happy! I never use it as a groove box although I know it’s there if I want it. I have purposely gotten synth based percussion instruments for that purpose. I probably got carried away though, three sources for a 909 and I got a RD -9 because I like the high hats! I’m experimenting with setting up percussion in the Eurorack but no dedicated modules. Brains that sort of thing. Peace, loved the video!
You are right, SH-4D can be used as a synth (and that's what it is, actually!), for this reason I will be soon exploring it as a sound source using an external sequencer. I'll post some videos about ASAP. Thank you for your kind comment, cheers!
Sounds great. I had to get one of these after seeing the Starsky Carr video. Your video would have sold me on it too had I not already bought it. There's a lot of things that Roland will hopefully address in a firmware update. Your suggestion is a good one.
Hi Malvinus - when you save a pattern, it also saves the mixer settings - so you could have the drum level set to 0 when the pattern starts & fade in as needed. I appreciate that won't work for every situation - particularly when jamming, but it should help a bit I guess. PS: I'm really enjoying your videos - it's really helping me make the most of the SH4-D & I really like your instructional videos too ! - could you post a video on how you made this mix ?? - many thanks Paul
Hi Paul! Thank you for your support, and thanks for sharing your tip as well, I really appreciate this kind of interactions, I feel we are building a cool community and i kinda like it! As for the how-to video, I'm getting to work, keep in touch!
I'd like to be able to set the four buttons under the sliders to flash to indicate which bar you are on when you are using more than sixteen steps. I wish saving was more like on the Digitakt. A global mute option would be nice as well. BTW, nice jam.
This machine is just fantastic but I wish there could be an easiest way to save your work (the options overwrite, pattern+tone and tone are just confusing), the small delay after changing pattern is annoying and sometimes tone parts just don't play anything (happened a couple of times). All of those are not a dealbreaker for me as I know just a firmware upgrade should be enough to fix them. Great videos, thanks!
If you care only about synth sounds, do you think this is better than getting a few boutiques? I wanted a JX-08 + JD-08 to pair with a controller like Novation SL3, but am wondering if SH-4D for similar price would be easier for exploring synth sounds. I have Ableton and Serum but wanted to try some simpler hands on gear.
Speaking of synth sounds only (the SH-4d has nice groove box capabilities as well) I think it's always a matter of taste and what you're used to. I like the way I interact with the SH-4d, I find It easy to manage. I have never owned a JX08 nor a JD08 but they are pretty good sounding in my opinion. I am not sure the workflow is as easy as with SH, in any case. That said, I would go with SH, possibly thinking of adding a JD08 later to expand the sonic possibilities (it seems to me that JX08 sounds closer to SH while the JX08 moves into other territory).
Just wondering, cant you use the Timbre encoder to control drum volume globally? Of course, that doesn't allow for per channel muting, which is what I think you are asking for.
i like the unique keys i just wish all the leds were brighter and there was a global preset for colors that would override the patch settings ill be sequencing/playing it externally anyways except for the drum part
They need to add a detune function. It's funny that 150 USD VST synths let you detune any waves you want, but Roland only lets you detune the supersaw.
That's a really annoying thing about the Korg Volca Drum as well. But the SH4D can do a lot more than a volca can so it feels like a baffling omission on this machine
@@malvinusmusic It’s not class compliant and yes I have tried. I have read this was the same case with the MC-101/707 but it was later fixed in a FW update. ☺️
I've been dreamiing of buying one of these. What you did with this track is awesome. More please.
Thank you, very appreciated! More videos to come...

Gosh damn dude. This could be in metroid prime 4. Nice job. Well done.
Thanks Adam!

Global mute but pre reverb!
Thanks for your comment!
tip top again. Malvinus you are kicking it. jam on it.
Thank you as always, Mate!
id like no quantization drums also to be able to see what page your on without pressing button and a count in for recording
Dope! Thank you!
For NEXT UPDATE
I really dig realtime transpose and 128 step sequencer! Thank you!
@@malvinusmusic transpose , seq 128 step will be updated you thing ? best vibes
We need motion record for drum parts (even if its just 4 for the overall kit also LFO access for drums.

U saying theres audible pause/gap in sound when shifting patterns?
@333_Tarot only if you're running and old firmware
And a 2 oscillator with 3 lfo engine? More matrix options on wave table. Ability to run the motion in the background
Thanks for your comment!

Why don't talk about the issue of the delay feedback cut when change pattern!
Yep, very annoying!
I want to be able to use a interface for the 4 outs
You can USB-connect the SH to a computer and have separate tracks, actually
Yes but it ads latency ***if they only came up with a vst option like mpc or Elektron
Just wondering, cant you use the Timbre encoder to control drum volume globally? Of course, that doesn't allow for per channel muting, which is what I think you are asking for.
Unfortunately it doesn't work, the volume resets to its saved value after changing pattern
nice, phat little synth, please add song mode and send/receive MIDI CC's please!
Thanks for your comment!
What firmware version are you using, v 10. 2 or v 10. 3?
I got 10.3
Wow, is this a Preset or do you do this by yourself? It Sounds wonderul !
No preset here, it's my own music, thank you mate!
@@malvinusmusic I love the Arpeggio, can you make a Video how you make this Track please?
I will try ASAP
@@malvinusmusic Nice, i love those Arpeggio Sounds, its a little bit like a synthwave 80s track . This is my Favorite!
I also like synthwave
do you have the problem of a "ghost echo" after playing an isolated note or a sequence ?? (while delay is still off)
Nope, I don't. Can you explain more in detail?
hahah excellent video and song as always
Hahaha thanks a lot Kaan, as always!
One major EPIC FAIL about this device is the keyboard keys. They sometimes stick in the down position. Had to return mine. Not bothering to replace.
It never happened to me although I agree about those keys

@kassie2k4 you can change the led color in the main menu settings
True. This is one of the reasons I end up with 5 or 6 identical patterns in different states of muted parts
Yes, absolutely. Isn't it a waste of time? Come on, Roland, do us a favor!
Pattern chain!
Yes! The list gets longer... Thank you!

Yes! This need needs an update.
that would be nice. But maybe just copy the Pattern But delete the drums on that version ?!
Yes, personally I usually copy the pattern with parts I want to mute muted.
SH -4d rocks

Let's hope a firmware update will fix this! Thank you!
Class compliant USB so I can record audio to my phone ☺️
I think it is class compliant but only with a stereo out (no separate tracks). Have you tried?
@@malvinusmusic It’s not class compliant and yes I have tried. I have read this was the same case with the MC-101/707 but it was later fixed in a FW update. ☺️
Looking forward to the firmware update ;-)
You could just write the next pattern with drums muted.
That's what I end up doing, but I wish it was less tricky
Chain paterns could solve that.
Yes, pattern chaininig could be a nice addition for many people. Thank you Rui for your comment!
