Do you need a usb drive to save scenes that you have created or can you just save the scene to the keyboard memory?
You can save the scene in the synth's itself
@@malvinusmusic thanks for the reply. I tried it before but I must’ve done something. I’ll figure it out. Thank you sir.
I can sadly assure you they do not care about end user requests.
@@earthhuman5448 how do you know It?
Would you be able to run the SH-4D's sequencer at the same time as the Oxi one for potentially five more sequences?
@@Xanaduum never tried so far but I think it's possible, I wanna try ASAP, thank you!
Sounds like the 80's 🙃 Working on something like Kraftwerk meets blues (bass part) and a hint of Japan/Anne Clarck 😅 The SH-4d is one of the most fun aand best purchases I made and reasonaly priced too 🤠
Yeah It reminds the 80s, you're right, and yes, SH-4d Is worth the price
I was going to say expand the PCM engine to include D50, JD800 and XV5080.
Thank you, I agree!
Keeping mine around just because it looks good on the desk, the presets are nice when I can find them to pass the time, got irritated with literally everything else about it, though I know there is more to this thing than I have the patience for.
The presets are very nice, and the ability to have four synth tracks plus rhythm is useful. I can live using it as a sound bank with an external sequencer, as it is aimed to, but I hope Roland will eventually release and update. Thanks for coming, cheers!
Silence from Roland? Is there no chance to adress another direct channel to Roland?
I know for sure that Roland is watching my videos, but I am not in touch with someone at Roland. I do believe they'll do what better matches their goals, unfortunately I don't know what they are...
Keep bumping into your videos 😅 Was wondering if the DX could do so but at half the price I think I go with the Keystep 37 (DIN midi in/out as CC). As for Reface had a look and listen to the CP, I'd prefer that over the DX in terms of sounds yet the midi capabilities make the DX a great option as well.
I agree, the video was meant for those who have a Reface and want to use it as a controller. If you're in the market for a controller, there are definetly Better options at a better price. Thanks for coming, always a pleasure!
Is it the same sequencer as in the Jupiter X?
Sorry I don't own the Jupiter X, so I can't tell you about it. Maybe in the future I Will test the Jupiter X, who know? Thanks for tuning in!
Sounds really nice. Are you happy with the Arturia keyboard? Thinking of getting Arturia or Akai, Arturia makes a better impression on me so far.
Hey Mate, Arturia is my go-to keyboard when it comes to play synths on my desktop. Akai has nice key-action as well, but I can't tell you which one tò buy, it's all about your preferences. Anyway, I use Arturia solely for the keys, I don't like/use It for the other features like arp or seq. Hope that helps, cheers!
@@malvinusmusic Grazie mille. It is just for desktop use on the SH-4d with maybe another purpose later on. Mini keys can be fine it is just a bit of getting used to. Becomming a desktop man 😅
Hey, do you know how to program drums onto certain sounds?
What do you mean?
@@malvinusmusic Sorry! was tired and clearly wasn't clear enough. You know how some sounds have drums that play when you play. is there a way to make your own?
@@ManOfJupiterMusic yes, watch the video where I show how. Check also: th-cam.com/video/6iJZP34WHBE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ohJOCby5D4rasQFo
Great clip but how do you change the sounds? Lots of issues with the manual online I've read with the MSB LSG PROGRAM CHANGE but its not exactly working via Logic.
You can change only user sounds, not the factory sounds. More videos about it coming soon, thank you for stopping by!
@@malvinusmusic Its incompatible with Logic Pro 11 & the one before it. I guess no refund. Can provide screen shot if need be. I'm using a Mac Mini M2 from 2023. Guesing no refund - will have to talk to my bank which is so frustrating.

Thank you for stopping by!
The SH-4d was never meant to be a groove box, so the first 5 points become moot when using an external sequencer. I have a System 8, amazing synth, but you wouldn't catch me dead using it's sequencer. The last two are big ones though, what's the point of line in if not for running things through fx? Also why isn't there a set performance save option already? Seems weird
You are right, I often say SH-4D is not a groove box as well. I also made videos on controlling SH from external sequencer. But since it has groove box functions, why not have better ones? Thanks for your comment, really appreciated!
Hello , thx for the tips, but I do not understand the random process, could you explain pls ?
As you can see at 4:03, put some trigs (in the video I put them on 1, 5, 9 and 13) then go in the pattern edit menu (shift+pattern) and scroll to the play mode item where you (I go by heart, don't have the machine in front of me) can have forward, reverse, etc., select RANDOM and listen to the result. Thanks for stopping by!
@@malvinusmusic Thank you very much for your quick feedback.,Understood ! I'll try this soon. I thought that, as on other machines, it was possible to add random notes directly. . Thanks again for your videos which are a treasure trove to help us discover this machine.
I would love to have the ability to record the aux in via USB.
@@gordtanner8332 It would be great as well!
What about songmode?
It's a controversial issue. Some people ask for it, others wouldn't know what to do with it. But if there was, it would still be a useful thing, at least for some. Thanks for sharing!
Roland doesn't chase ghosts 😂They just badly remake their original classics and sell TR-808 themed sportswear. That said I own this device and I like it. All the things you mention would be welcome. Though for the requested software I think we'd be better off making our own in the community. I'm not quite sure they can offer the FX being used on the audio in, it might not go through the DSP.
A third-party editor/librarian would be great, but as far as I know there isn't one at the moment. What I'm hoping for isn't necessarily an update from Roland, but at least a formal response to these requests. Thanks for stopping by!
Nice review after the hype is over. Very nice Groovebox and the current price makes it a bargain since there is nothing comparable (MC-101 is loaded with sounds but a nightmare to work with).
@@user-jy3io4iz2p thank you Mate, I do love this machine, cheers!
@@malvinusmusic Am actually contemplating selling the TR-8s (CR-78!) and get an SH-4d (new). The TR-8s is great but in retrospect I'd gone for the SH (was not out when I bought the TR-8s). Had the MC-101 but didn't like the interface at all.
@user-jy3io4iz2p although I love SH-4d, TR-8s is a whole other things, I suggest to sleep on it
@@malvinusmusic Sure, I am thinking about it and looking at current used prices for thr TR-8s is what got me here 😅 Wish the MC-101 had the interface of the SH-4d. The real step back would be losing the CR-78, combined with 808 and 707 my favorites. What I do before even putting up for sale is use the item a bit and see if it I can live with it or let go. Bought the TR-8s few years ago when it was €579 so that makes it a little easier but that CR-78 🥲
An update... The SH-4d I want but keep the TR-8s at first and see how that works out. Thanks for the advice to have a sleep over it 🤠 You seem to be a more sensible than impulsive person. Saw you're from Italy (been to Ventimiglia, Como and Milano) and want to visit Toscane 😎 Grazie mille from Paesi Bassi 😃
Great video mate. It is yet another example of Roland not developing their platforms fully. I love their stuff - but they always seem to miss R&D and BETA testing feedback. Some of your ideas are probably more "nice to have" - but the first few are really needed.
@@ranzee I collected the wishes of the network, let's hope Roland listens to us this time, thanks!
Good video. You hit all the good spots. Also more PCM sounds. Tons more.
@@osands absolutely, PCM sounds are too few! Thank you!
I finally got frustrated enough that I traded in my SH4D for an MC707. I am very glad I did this.
@@wendelynmusic I understand you very well 💚
Thank you! Great to see step by step as I couldn’t quite grasp the split from the manual. Everything but the octave + worked for me. Once the patch is save- shift and write, should the octave + be saved?? Thanks
Afaik the octave Is saved with the patch... Let me know if it works!
The only update needed is to store all sounds with the pattern. Other requests all increase CPU, very bad idea, except 128 steps, thats a good one.
nah trig conditions are also a must.
@@suffpapst thank you for your comment!
@@osands It the CPU is aready exhausted I don't need it. Buy an Elektron ;).
@@malvinusmusic 128 steps, pattern chain or better arranger, count in, metronome, tones with pattern save which is currently a nightmare with all that time waste and accidental overwrite, and CPU optimizations! But I do get sometimes phenomenal sounds and grooves. Using only part 5 (drums) can get you outstading drum loops. It's a great addition already. But I use that material and continue in a DAW of course.
@@suffpapst all good points! I agree that SH-4d is a great sounding synthesizer, but I do believe it would become top notch in its price range after these updates! Thanks for stopping by!
I jut sold mine even though I liked it because it feels like abandonware. OTOH I'm not that bothered about sequencer changes. I don't know where you got this list but it seems to focusing almost entirely on the sequencer and missing the things I would have liked to see on the synth side (more PCM samples, user wavetables for example. Also class-compliant USB).
Absolutely, It is a synth after all, I would like more sounds as well! Thanks for your comment!
Agreed with all of these except count in, see where ya are in sequencer, and saving is fine for me I like it for saving patches and not the whole song 🎧. LFO on a drum track, be able to use internal fx in line in are the most important to me off grid recording.
@@SonicVibe thanks for sharing!
Mostly missing bonus nr. 1. At least change the backup format and extend the midi implementation. We can build our own editor and library manager if they don’t want to as long as the device supports it. But I doubt Roland is going to add any of these improvements.
@@SonicWalkerMix third party editor/librarian would be also great!
I would love these updates! The SH-4d is such a sleeper synth.
@@JonManness yes!
Agreed 👍
How about class-compliant audio output? That would seem like an easy change because they already do per-channel audio with Windows and Mac drivers but you can't do it with any other platform. If they would just dedicate some resources to instead shifting to class-compliant audio then they could cut both of those development teams (for each driver package) or turn them over to working on the other stuff that you mentioned in the video. Yeah, I'm a Linux user primarily and so I'm obviously passionate about this. It seems like such a ridiculous oversight especially as they do provide audio output over USB but only mixed. I don't want it mixed; I want discrete channels!
@@agh8459 I'd love if SH-4d was class-compliant!
Hello, I agree with all the requests. I'm not sure that the processing of the input signal is possible from a hardware point of view. Like the Boutiques, the input seems to be mixed after the DAC, in the analog domain. Regarding the ability to record out of the grid, this feature might lead to rebuild the sequencer's software; thus, adding swing to a track is already a good way to humanize this one. Parameter locking and 128 steps per pattern can be implemented only if the memory size allows it to. According to me, 128 steps instead of 64 per pattern is the priority for a next update, along with an enhanced storage policy .
If Roland tells us what can and can't be done, we'd be happy. I mean, if there are hardware or cost limitations, we ask Roland to tell us. I think Roland will eventually answer to the community, it owes them. Thanks for your detailed comment!
If past experience is anything, no, they are not listening to the customer at all. I actually think they dislike customers.
@@antikytheramechanism7909 I think they will know much we care from the likes and commenta this video will get and eventually they will have lo listen 💚
i recoment unquantized recordings

I'm with you in all the points you talked about... Let's hope they are really listening to us...
@@DecibelDisorder thanks for stopping by!
All good points! Also other filter models would boost this nice machine . However, I lost a little bit the hope that there will be any updates. From Roland only silence, I tried my luck with the German service contact…
@@inductor5479 in Italy we say: hope is the last to die... Yeah other filter models would be great!
Still no software update for this synth since released? As a main propagator/user of this unit on yt, would you be able to tell Roland a word or two about what needs to improve ? Thanks

@@malvinusmusic how ya liking the digitakt 2 ?
@SonicVibe I like the 128 steps, the sampling features are now better and make me want to sample more than with the OG Digitakt. I like the improved memory space and the use of kits as well.
