Final Approach Fix (FAF) MUST WATCH video!! Biggest Misconception Explained - [All You Need To know]

  • The Final Approach Fix (FAF) is the fix where the Final Approach Segment of a Non-Precision Approach starts.
    The Approach Procedure has three segments: The Initial Approach Segment, Intermediate Approach Segment, and the Final Approach Segment.
    In order to fly correctly a Non-Precision Approach, it is very important to identify where the FAF is.
    You have to make sure that you overfly the Final Approach Fix at the right Altitude and established laterally.
    The FAF is indicated in the Approach Charts by a Maltese Cross.
    Normally, its position is identified by a dme distance from a ground station or a ground aid station.
    The biggest misconception about the Final Approach Fix is that many pilots think the FAF applies to ILSs approaches as well.
    This is so because you can find the Faf depicted on the ILS LOC chart, however, the Final Approach Fix is on the ILS LOC charts because it applies to the Localizer procedure only.
    If you look at a CATII/III chart you will notice that there is no FAF because there is no Non-Precision Approach.
    If you are interested to see how I identify the Final Approach Fix on a Vor approach and how I fly the procedure you can watch the TH-cam video below:

    For ILS approaches Final Approach Segment starts when stablished in LOC and GS and that point is called Final Approach Point (FAP) instead of Final Approach Fix (FIX). It is a Point and not a Fix because it position varies due to weather conditions even if it is intercepted always at the same indicated altitude

    FAA in US *does* define a FAF for a precision approach (ILS).
    From the FAA definition,:
    FINAL APPROACH FIX- ... It is designated on Government charts by the Maltese Cross symbol for nonprecision approaches *** and the lightning bolt symbol, designating the PFAF, for precision approaches***

    A precision approach's final approach fix is defined by the charting authority; how it is symbolised is shown in the charts' Legend.
    Does ICAO define or depict the FAF for precision approaches? In the US the FAA says "It is designated.....by the.....lightning bolt symbol, designated the PFAF, for precision approaches....." Jeppesen says about the same thing--depicting it with the upper end of the pennant.

    Hi captain,
    Can you explain why on the 2 VOR approach charts (at 2:12), there is a Decision Altitude ? I thought a DA was only given for Precision Approaches, whereas VOR approches are Non Precision Approaches (there should be a MDA instead...?) thank you for your answer !

    Thank you I understand It now. And where do you do the landing checklist? Before or after the faf?

    • @PILOTCLIMB
      @PILOTCLIMB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, I hope you are doing well!!
      I'm happy to see the video helped you!!
      When to perform the landing checklist depends on the Airplane type and Company procedure.
      However You as a pilot decide when to accomplish the Landing checklist.
      The advise I can give to you is, try not to overload yourself, if the faf is in short final try to accomplish the landing checklist before.
      Otherwise do the checklist after. It really depends on the faf location and on your discretion!
      I hope my answer helped you!!
      Don't hesitate to ask me any question you might have when watching the videos!!

    There is FAF and we have also FAP
    CAN YOU explain the deference between them
    Cz i thinked that precision approach have FAP
    and non_precision approach have FAF
    Thanks

    • @PILOTCLIMB
      @PILOTCLIMB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, the FAF is the point on a Non precision Approach where the final descend starts and, the FAP is the point along the LOC of an ILS (or precision Approach) that identifies the commencement of the final approach segment.

    Thank you captain! I'm a new guy of instrument flying. And I'm just confused about presicion approach (ILS…) and approach with vertical guidance (LPV…) . We use DA for these approaches, so is that the same principle to decide where to decent on the final approach phase?

    • @PILOTCLIMB
      @PILOTCLIMB  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I hope you are doing great! Many thanks for watching the video.
      The Final Approach Phase of a LPV approach starts at the Final Approach Fix, so it is important to identify where is it located.
      In the case of the ILS approach, you have a platform altitude that ends when you intercept the Glide Slope.
      Let me know if I answered your question...
