      My school forced us to Sit In the auditorium instead of walking out. Our school safety officers were blocking the doors, but us students still went into the auditorium and stayed silent for 17 minutes. A few of us have written letters to Congress in a push for laws focusing on not just guns but mental health. It felt good that kids my age finally stood up for something, and I'm proud of everybody who stood up for what they believed in, and I hope this keeps the discussion going. #NeverAgain

    Our school gave us signs saying “I walk because...” and gave us designated points to walk to so we could have 17 minutes of silence for the victims. We were allowed to write whatever we wanted on the signs and we wouldn’t get in trouble for it. Everybody stood in silence, nobody fought, and although a lot of us had different opinions and completely different signs, we all stood in unity for those 17 minutes in a blizzard. One person wrote “I walk for gun control” on their sign, and the person next to them wrote “I walk for the second amendment” on their sign. Despite our conflicting opinions, there were no fights, just unity

      The walk out is political activism which has no place in school, a memorial would have been more appropriate.

      John Walter, there has been plenty of time for memorials, plenty of time to pay respects. Political activism is more appropriate in school than a gun/knife/drugs, but hey.

    • @johjoh1203

      Kate Butler Political activism is inappropriate in school because parents of all views pay taxes supporting schools and send their kids to schools, therefore schools should push views. Schools educate, not indoctrinate.

      it's an improvement, but some people are still going to see it as a prioritization of the 'correct' victims: women, children, then men. However, she does it in any other order, and she'd likely get more pushback (kinda damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario). She's taken the time to put her thoughts in order and it's a careful response.

    I don't dislike Rhianna, but I haven't been given much of a reason to like her either. Then I saw that she included men in her list of DV victims. She gets a brownie point. Thank you for recognizing that it's not just women and children that get abused.

    Gotta be honest, if I was in high school still, I probably wouldn't have planned on walking out with everyone because I think the issue of gun control is really complicated, and I don't want to come across as making a stand that I am not (if that makes any sense). But FUCK dude, if my school locked the gates, called an assembly, scheduled a drill, threatened suspension? I would ABSOLUTELY walk out, just because they DIDN'T want me to, just because they were trying to sensor these students that are, whether you believe they should be or not, ARE scared for their lives. FUCK american education.

    • @sillyking1991
      @sillyking1991 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      i will agree with you on locking the gates and such, but thats just because that seems like a safety issue to me. fact of the matter is though, the students don't have a right to walk out, if they had a right to leave whenever they want, then tardiness and unexcused absences wouldn't be punishable.
      additionally, what is the point of a walkout if the school allows you to do it. the whole point of a walkout is that its meant to be disruptive. if the people you're 'disrupting' have planned for that disruption, then its an empty gesture.
      furthermore, about walkouts specifically. The reason walk-outs are a type of protest, is because you're essentially saying 'i believe in this so much that i am willing to be punished in order to have my voice on the matter be heard. if there's no threat of punishment, again the gesture is empty.
      TL:DR if there's no opposition to your method of protest, your protest is empty.

      sillyking1991 they actually do have every right to walk out of school. No teachers or administration can physically stop them until they actually break a law. They can be punished afterwards of course, but they cannot be detained. Also, it’s called civil disobedience, learn what that means

    • @sillyking1991
      @sillyking1991 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if they are allowed to be punished afterward....then its not a right. its still against the rules. I haven't said that students SHOULDN'T walk out. I am simply pointing out that this walk out is in no way reflective of 'politicaly aware' students.

    • @VIPandalicious
      @VIPandalicious 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sillyking1991 That's not really how rights work. I mean, free speech is a right, but your job can still fire you for what you said. Doesn't stop it from being a right. In this case, they can't be physically stopped, but can be punished for their actions.

Especially in the way it has been done, Its like killing somebody cant be done more efficiently. Looks like it was done to provoke attention.. . . . There is something very wrong with this incident.

      Daezeth Do you really think that using a chemical weapon that is forbidden by the Geneva Conventions to kill one irrelevant ex-spy wil put putin in a good light in russia. Do you really think the other parties in russia / russians like to be viewed as transgressors of international law that could potentially jeopardize the economy.
      thats dumb

    • @TheMaxORyan
      @TheMaxORyan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cin3 Russia is responsible, there's no doubt. Russia used a Russian Military Grade nerve agent against a defector. Why? To send a message to any other possible russian agents: If they defect, they will die. It doesn't matter whether they go, no country can protect them. That's why Putin used an exclusively Russian nerve agent.
      Honestly if you look into Russian assassinations over the past 10 years against people who are against Putin you'll find a bunch, though normally they happen either in Russia, or Eastern Europeen countries.
      This attack stands out because it's on British soil. If this had been in Ukraine, you wouldn't have heard any western nations talk about it; but seeing as it's on British soil that's what's caused thsi outrage: Russia believes they can assassinate anyone they want, wherever they want.
      If you look at the Russian state media, and some comments made by Putin over the past few days, you'll see that he they don't make any attempt to hide the murder. One clip that really stands out is a bit on Russia media, a man announces the attack saying "A traitor to our country was victim of a nerve agent attack in the UK. Let this serve as a warning to all traitors ect..." can't remember the exact quote, but it was something like that.
      "Daezeth Do you really think that using a chemical weapon that is forbidden by the Geneva Conventions to kill one irrelevant ex-spy wil put putin in a good light in russia. Do you really think the other parties in russia / russians like to be viewed as transgressors of international law that could potentially jeopardize the economy."
      Honestly I believe that Russia his going to victimize itself to it's people saying "They blame us for everything, we had nothing to do with it. This is further proof the West is iur ennemy."
      I do believe Putin would do this, he does it to all of his political opponents, and this wasn't about killing some irrelevant spy. This was about sending a message to all those who have thoughts of defecting: We will kill you, no matter where you go.

    My school held a rally for 17 minutes instead of a walk out which I was kind of okay with. Afterwards in class, we discussed the schools policies on lockdowns. I asked my teacher what we were supposed to do if we saw the shooter or happened to meet them and she said that “the school doesn’t teach us about that. I tried asking the principal but he said he had no idea” I just really think that students and teacher should be given more information for different scenarios to help if there was another tragedy.

      Sadly, if you come across a shooter in a hallway, and there is no chance of getting away, you fight. You do what you can to try and invompacitate them to try and protect others. It is either fight or flight. If you can't run, you might as well fight. I'd personally rather die knowing I tried. Maybe I gave someone around the corner or down the hall the chance to get into a classroom.

      Corsair Chip No one cares about her bigotry. The issue lies where she stated that she hopes for everyone to get shot. If that’s not disturbing to you, you might have issues buddy. I’m an avid gun owner, and I would never say something even remotely moronic as what she did. I don’t think her “weapons” were any big deal, but her words and thoughts are very alarming; even more so due to her mental state from getting an avalanche of death threats and hate messages sent to her every day since her brother’s shooting.
      You seem to be posting a lot of comments focusing on bigotry. She’s not being targeted for her “racist” statement. No one gives a fuck about that. Again, she’s being targeted because she stated that she hoped all the students would get shot. Try to carve that into your brain, and stop whining in the comment section. America is the land of the brave and free, not the land of the whiney bitches.

      There can be a defense of censored speech because it is packed in with hate speech, in which case it is offensive to the majority of listeners. But that doesn't excuse individuals abusing this ambiguity, so long as the environment is organised and out of control. Like clearly that one chick with the gun was spitting hate speech, but I understand that Right and Left Liberals get too radical in these matters and don't understand the difference.
      You should at least listen to the opposing side. Learn what you should not be, understand their thinking, and have a conversation if permissible. Being uneducated or cutting the tongue of an opinion we do not approve of, this benefits no side. Ever.

      Morgan Freeman I've lived in Louisiana for ten years and have been in Alabama for nearly ten as well. The city is supposed to sound an alarm once a tornado is sighted but in terms of a warning from mother nature? No...if you yourself aren't paying attention, damn straight that shit can just drop down. A few of the biggest signs are a greenish-yellow sky (I remember being forcefully woken up one Sunday morning when I was about 12 and herded into the windowless bathroom with my siblings because the sky was that shade. I believe a tornado did hit...just not our city) and of course, swirling clouds.
      There may be hail and heavy rain but not always. And people say it sounds like a train; I can't confirm that. However, it will rattle things even before descending. My mom yanked me out of school one day (a school completely lined with windows and where many of our classes were trailers disconnected from the main building) because a tornado passed overhead. She was at Walmart with my younger sibling and it caused the lights to go out.
      So! Is it worth practicing a tornado drill? Absolutely. Not all tornados appear the same way so you might not have time to get a warning from the city.

    I'm a Uk resident and I'm deeply disturbed by the events that have unfolded. The fact that 30 odd people were seen in hospitals and troops were deployed to the restaurant where they ate to remove items is shocking. If this was an attack by Russia then that is exactly what it is, an attack. However, I'm also concerned as to why the government did not hand over a sample to the Russians from the porton down facility or hand over samples to the un security council for unbiased analysis. I believe that the situation has been drastically escalated by the breakdown of communication by both sides. But Russia has some serious explaining to do. My family could have been eating in that resteraunt, it has seriously undermined our national security and the right to feel safe.

      If you hand anything over to the Russians they will test it and deny that its novichok and probably say its a nerve agent made in the UK. I think more serious measures need to be taken than just what she has put forward so far. I don't think there strong enough after a chemical weapon attack

    I think Russia is partly justified in asking for an independent investigation per international law. I’d like to see multiple sources identifying this agent before the agent becomes the central cause of major global conflict. If we take further action I want it to be justified conclusively . Especially when actions like this can and have caused wars

      I simply think that it is prudent for us to be objective in matters that could lead to global conflict. Russia has a lot to be scared and upset about, we have made many mistakes in international diplomacy by not entirely understanding Russia position and adequately responding to it. This isn’t to say they’re right, this isn’t to say that if Russia commutes these acts that it isn’t an absolutely unacceptable violation of sovereignty (something we aren’t exactly innocent of). But if we as the United States seek to uphold our values of civil freedom, fair justice and democratic process, we must act on these values internationally as well as domestically.

    • @JaMaAuWright
      @JaMaAuWright 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think that only giving it to Russia for examination is a good idea. They could very easily just say "No, this isn't our neurotoxin." Even if it was. The Russian propaganda machine is strong, and I've no doubt that they would manipulate results or otherwise falsely report them in order to save face on a global scale. If you hand it off to a number of different countries for analysis, and only Russia is saying it's not their poison... there's a pretty good chance that it's their poison.

    • @romanlegion5837
      @romanlegion5837 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      JaMaAuWright I don’t doubt that at all that Russia would manipulate or flat out lie about the results. I wouldn’t expect honest results. They’d be as honest as the UK and her allies all reflecting the same results. Neither are objective which is why I stated there should be an independent (as much as possible) analysis. The UN could do it and even if there is bias in the UN it would give the appearance of an independent body and therefore turn global sentiment against Russia and make it more difficult for Russia to deny accusations in the future. There are impactful ramifications into the future regardless of what happens, but to make SOME attempt is better than none.

      They didn't give it to them at all. Which is dumb, because they supposedly manufactured it. They were THE ONLY ONES who could've manufactured it, according to Britain.
      So, give it to them. Let them take a fucking looksie. They're, technically, the best fucking experts you can find. How do you like them apples?
      Also, give it to China, for example.
      Yeah, China is a Russian ally. And US, France and Germany are allies of UK. The "analysis" is extremely fucking one-sided so far.

      There will be no Cold War. Many argue that it never ended. But to play to your suggestion; we are currently in a Cold War with China. While we aren’t fighting true proxy wars against China we are in technological competition, espionage, economic conflict and a diplomatic shoving match. They are our greatest global rival and a larger militaristic threat. However, it is highly unlikely that we will see direct warfare or conflict, we are heavily interdependent economically and it would be heavily detrimental and costly to both nations to engage in a true war.

      Despite the tensions between Britain and Russia, I would not worry about WWIII. The world is now in a way that makes a world war very unlikely, if not impossible. That being said, just know that through NATO Europe, Canada and the US will be safe. And for others such as South Korea, New Zealand, Japan and Australia, remember that the US will always stand side by side with them.

    • @jamesstack7237
      @jamesstack7237 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I understand your anxiety all to well. It's a legitimate fear and nothing seems to help alleviate that fear. It is worth noting, however, that most countries realize there is no good outcome to WWIII. Russia, China, and even North Korea are well aware of the massive ramifications of such a war. What you are seeing right now is nothing more than political posturing. Russia is trying to rebuild the power it once yeilded under the USSR. Putin sees the fractured people of the US and our splintered relations with our allies as a chance to step up. He might be crazy but he's no fool.
      Also, if it helps any, the last time there was a world war communication was still a thing lacking. With the internet allowing for instant global communication I can now talk to my counterparts in Russia or China or most anywhere else in the world for that matter.
      I love Philip DeFranco's show and I am a proud Patreon but I do find it alarming when he pushes the "end of times" narrative. Worry not, Julia, those times are not upon us yet.

    I have to disagree with Phil on the sign restriction. When I was in high school we had feminist protest signs and confederate flag posters both removed for not being approved 24 hours in advance. I think it’s a common practice by schools and if the student didn’t get the permission to display it then it is to be enforced. It’s like this at my college now too.

    • @MapleBull95

      I think his issue was more on how the school selectively implemented that rule. There is no way all of the people in that protest had every single sign or poster approved beforehand, so having that one counter-protest kid be the only one to have action taken against him just makes it seem awfully selective.

    I have a personal thing to talk about with the walkout. So my school also had the rule that we weren’t allowed to go outside, but we were allowed to go in the gym for 17 minutes of silence. When we were supposed to go at 10, it was our lunch time, but still a lot of people wanted to go to the gym. The principal & Vice principal had blocked the cafeteria exits before we could go to the gym which everyone found weird, and when one girl tried to go past them she was ordered to sit back down. The principal then announced that no one was to go to the gym to walk. A lot of people who actually cared about the cause were outraged and very mad at the principal and vice principal. My friend then told me that she had algebra class before lunch, and her teacher let the kids make posters about gun violence. She then said that the principal came into the classroom and ripped down all of the posters. (A lot of other people who had that teacher can confirm this actually happened) I’m still so confused as to why the principal had such a huge problem with us just going to the gym, and why he had a problem with the whole poster thing.

      SpookyKettle the fact that it’s a chemical attack in be first place is worrying, how does it benefit russia to make such an obvious move then deny it? Call me a conspiracist but I reckon it was done by the British government 🤔

      its quite outlandish to say that the uk government was behind it. ruling out whatever evidence we have now and just looking at history, russia is known for putting its sketchy behaviour in the spotlight. im not saying the uk government is innocent but its secret services are always extremely private and keep out of the public eye. putin could possibly be trying to send a message with this attack , but who knows, im certainly no expert.

      SpookyKettle it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Russia was behind it but our government doesn’t usually act so rash. I realise it’s quite a unique situation and maybe it’s just May’s style of doing things but not even giving Russia the chance to analyse the agent before kicking out the diplomats seems odd. I mean that's fair, but highly unfortunate they don't understand why these kids are walking out in the first place. The kids are thinking of their friends who were killed or could potentially be killed without reason at their school. But these adult protesters are too concerned with their ideas that these kids want guns taken away and have no idea what they're doing. It's quite tragic when people can't see eye to eye on what's mostly (though not entirely) a moral issue.

    I agree completely, bringing marijuana to school obviously never a good idea, and a bigoted pretty trash person... But come on Philly, I'm a 19 year old girl and I carried pepper spray both in high school and now in college. I know many of my male classmates carried pocket knifes. "Weapons" seems harsh to me. Both are very common, and I don't think either are unreasonable if they are kept in the bag while on campus. If you're a person who walks home, uses public transportation, or just hangs out late, i think its a safety thing, especially as a teenager. Again "weapons" seems misleading, I don't see it likely that either are for anything but a safety precaution, in most situations, even one involving a racist.

      Bob, she probably carried the knife and pepper spray to defend herself against people like you who want to punish and harass her for a family members crimes. I've seen TONS of gun control supporter crazies post the exact same thing, but surprise surprise they aren't arrested or investigated.
      I carried a knife and pepper spray to high school every day. I was (am) gay, and picked on regularly, and it made me feel safer knowing I could defend myself if they tried to really hurt me this time. It also helped me take the abuse and get through my days, oddly. But actually I started carrying because someone older than me, a random stranger, tried to start a fight with me for literally no reason after I got off the bus and was walking home one day.

      The school is not supposed to hold your hand when it comes to free thinking, you learn that yourself. The school provides you the basic building blocks to further expand your knowledge on your own time if you choose to do so. Either you're too young to realize how stupid your comment is, or you're too stupid in general to realize that critical thinking is something that is very hard to teach and a difficult concept for young students to learn in the time teachers are allotted in each teaching session. Keep in mind that they also have to instill basic knowledge and lessons in you so that you're not ignoarant enough to actually think things like "Communism is actually a viable form of government"

    My school didn't even allow students to say the word "gun" in our speeches, and many members of the student council has their speeches rewritten. Our protest was forced inside due to "weather" (snow on the ground) but those concerns were bullshit as we had a fire drill the day after (today) with snow still on the ground. Kids who walked out anyways were silenced by teachers when they tried to speak, and were threatened with suspensions, both in school and out of school. In the end, no one was punished, but the announcement of the punishment was incredibly dismissive of the students concerns, treating the like ornery delinquents who just wanted to get out of school, calling them disrespectful.
    I know you get a lot of people saying that "you should mention this" and "you should mention that" in the comments, but I want to ask you to mention my school in the next video to bring awareness to this censorship of student speech and utter disrespect coming from adults to students with genuine concerns. My school is Ellington High School.

So no it's not wrong to not be surprised that one child displaying such racism has a sibling that is clearly also racist. It's just being realistic. Stop living in lala land. As long as they don't automatically judge and poorly treat the person for another member's actions *BEFORE* they display the same mindset -- there's nothing wrong with a statement like that and there's no reason to be triggered by it.
      Sounds like someone has a guilty conscience. LOL

    Philip, as a Sarasota County Schools Student, in Sarasota Florida, I felt that the walk out pushed aside anyone who wants a push towards aiding mental health in the United States. I live in a state with a ranking of #43 nationally for access to care, and #41 for youth access to care. Mental health is a serious issue that is being swept under the rug. I want to host a sit in in my high school, but I am a senior and I don’t want to jeopardize the college acceptance that I have received. I feel alone and ignored. I’ve been insulted for not walking out with the rest of my school when our county organized the walk out. I don’t know what to do. One school in our county was going to force students to walk out, but they canceled due to a student committing suicide the day before. Whether it was related to the walk out i’m unsure, but it’s just another life lost to depression in my generation. I’ve had friends who have attempted suicide on campus, luckily they were stopped in time. It’s a real problem, and noone seems to give a f*** what do I do?

    • @jordanthompson996
      @jordanthompson996 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would like to redact my statement on the suicide, as i did not confirm it ahead of time. There is no news about it , i should have confirmed it, it may be a rumor but it may also not yet be released. I apologize if either are the case.

      Two things. One, any university that would rescind your offer of acceptance (or choose not to give you one in the first place) because of your involvement in a peaceful political rally is not one you want to go to.
      Two - gun control and mental health go hand in hand. Those suicides you talk about? Because it is so easy to get access to a gun it is so much easier for a person to commit suicide. Studies have shown that even putting small road blocks in the way of people wanting to commit suicide is often enough to dissuade them entirely. So gun control, more than stopping mass shooters, will save a huge number of lives just by making suicide that little bit more difficult.

      +Lane Heyen Guns aren't the only way for someone to kill themselves. It's just easier for some people since it's "quick and painless." Nothing a belt, overdosing on drugs, a knife and other objects can't fix though.
      I'm on the side of mental health here, though I do believe guns are an important part of the argument, mental health is a lot more important.

    • @jordanthompson996
      @jordanthompson996 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lance Heyen banning an assault rifle wont cure my friends depression, or prevent them from swallowing pills, or give more money to mental health facilities, or reach out to students in need. My point is that guns are being used as a scape goat for mental health, and I feel shut down by others because I believe that way. Florida passed new legislation increasing the buying age from 18-21.... that was almost a week before the walk out. Trust me, no one I know who are thinking about it will be using an Ar-14 to leave this world. It’s that lie that pushes our need under the rug. Thanks for the response though, I appreciate it.

      Perhaps if you frame the event for mental health awareness in general rather than as a reaction to the shooting, it would not only be acceptable but will also probably make colleges want you more. Maybe wait a little bit until after the March is done and go for it.

    regarding the snapchat or insta question, i personally like insta stories more. i use snapchat more often, however, bc i’ve made it a friends-only platform whereas insta is a public account. despite that, i like that for insta stories, u could now save it as highlights on ur profile, and there’s an archive you can look back to once the 24 hours are up. this lets me know who’s seen my story even if they’ve expired. insta stories are rlly doing their best to keep up with snapchat, and competition is beneficial to the consumers in this case. we have better options to choose from

    Philip DeFranco, I wasn’t a student, but I went to see what they did with it. Their school handled the whole thing quite practically; they had to have a note from their parents. The sit in felt right, but the march/speeches were weird. They marched to a park (not the courthouse they had planned on), and had speakers talk. Someone read a rather silly poem explaining that we shouldn’t have gun rights because some people are too clumsy to own a gun. A few local politicians got up to give vague speeches that included one proposed idea (lowering the allowed capacity to 10) between the three of them. Some students got up to share their fears, and a few experiences with gun violence (including a boy who had contemplated shooting himself). The dynamic between the kids and the adults was weird. The adults lead chants and seem to have provided signs. The vibe was weird.
    I got a fair amount of it on video, but my battery died before the student testimonials: th-cam.com/video/jDKuusp36O4/w-d-xo.html

    I walked out of school yesterday, and let me be perfectly clear: I don't give a shit about school shootings. Everyday in school is hell. I get insulted, cussed at, shoved at lockers, harassed. If adults and students really cared about school shootings they'd do something about how toxic schools are. It's all a joke bc people don't really do anything about why schools are getting shot at in the first place. They are shit/hell holes, and bad things happen at shit holes. I walked out just because I didn't want to be in class, and so did most people I know.
    Students and teachers know how toxic schools are. They just don't give a shit. Then someone kills themselves or shoots up a school and people say, "I wish I would have known. I would have done something about it." They know. It's sad. That's why I'm not impressed about these kids speaking out about guns, because my question is, "Where were you before? Were you the bully? And if not, why did you allow it to happen?" It's only an issue when they get shot at, but if someone is shit on everyday they don't care.

    Some kid today killed himself on livefeed for 4chan with a shotgun. He was anonymous, so I don't know who he is, but I did unfortunately see the video (because the internet is fucked up). He waved goodbye and then just blew his brains out in his room. At first I was skeptical, which is fine, but I wasn't shocked. And I'm not bragging to not have been moved. But is it a bad thing that people are insensitive to it? As anyone who would have done it for a response would have been greeted by nothing but emotionless people knowing that, despite it being horrible, people just kill themselves? Is this absolute desensitization of the new globally connected word a bad thing, or are we removing negative responses in return of better knowing the horrors of this world, and not being scared of them?
    Sorry if that doesn't make sense, I'm still thinking about it.

      "but this interconnected world of ours is beginning to show the internet's massive downsides"
      If anything it shows how soft you've all become. I'ts not been a long time since people were faced with brutal scenes on a daily basis. Millions of people saw worse than this just in WWII, but also all the other wars, they didn't all break down a cry every time they saw someone shot, or disembowelled or exploded into little pieces or chopped up in medieval sword/axe/spear fighting. You do know that there was a war called "the 100 years war", right? do you think people were breaking down every time they saw someone die? or until just about 100 years ago even in "civilised" countries, infant and child mortality was sky-high, yet entire nations weren't paralysed by people wailing in the streets. 50 years of relatively easy times and people in civilised countries have forgotten what the daily struggle used to look like.

    The problem is, there needs to be a consensus that fair treatment is alive and well and the fact that there is a Bill stating that between UK and Russia there requires a joint investigation to get both sides, and obviously UK is not willing for this to happen, what are they hiding? The Idea that just because a group of nations came out and sided with alleged hearsay does not negate the fact that it does in fact seem to be quite one sided.
