That hand knife thing is actually so awful that, when I saw it, my brain went "yes, you grab that by the blade and hit people with the hand," and after thinking about it, that still seems like the sensible approach.
I think the original intention was "handshake with the hand to use the blade". But... yeah.

I people should always be critical with what they care, giving a very simple example video games:
New game franchise: (1)Nice game overall.
The sequence: (2)poorly developed rushed and buggy.
If people don't make a statement the game number (3) is going to be worse.
Also Amazon is big, hating some things does not mean a crusade against everything the company does, that would be immature, but personally I don't like the company.

The one at 16:24 is a navaja, a traditional Spanish clasp (folding) knife, and they tend to be on the large side as well as oddly shaped. The ratcheting locking mechanism produces an ominous clicking noise called "carraca" which in its native land supposedly has the same mental effect on some people as the sound of a pump shotgun being racked..
I was just thinking looking at that thing that it looked a bit weird, but not outright crazy or even eye catching like you would expect a mall sword to look. I was thinking it was probably African in origin since it kinda reminded me of that one curved club.

At 17:00 you get so distracted by the sword halfway down the display that you didn't keep looking and see the ridiculous multi bladed dragon head monstrosity just below it.
It's the pistol grip that sells it for me
The first blade shown is what is known as a gut-hook knife. So you use it when hutning and cutting fish and other animals. You make a slit then you use the blade on the back to insert and pull. As a trivia, that also makes the gut hook knife very good for opening envelopes and packages.
I've never seen it as a folding knife before though.
That’s actually a pretty handy sounding tool. Brilliant human ingenuity canceled out by our own stupidity. Common theme with us.
We sell folding gut hooks ..the useless part of that knife are the serrations, which would tear flesh not cut and would be too short for bone.
I actually talk most people out of any serrated knives unless they're cutting webbing or rope.
While some what functional those models with heat treating dyes and style of handle are not efficient. Than you have the blade, yes folding applications do exist i don’t like folding hunting knives but they do exist with very nice comfortable handles.
I've seen them as folders. I do not recommend due to the pulling action however. Even if just opening up the mail. Tried one out and it would want to close on the pull.
Also pretty nice cutting fishing line what is tangled around fish or something else. And like u said gutting small critters. Saw edge makes it better cutting nylon ropes. cut is not so nice but it will cut nicely without too much effort.

That steampunk knife is actually a custom (completely handmade) folding knife made by Stefan Steigerwald with what looks to be an extremely well done pattern steel. The handle actually contracts as the blade opens, and the trigger on the top is an ingenious locking mechanism. Nowhere near mall ninja at all. Instead of just being tacticool eye-candy, It's basically a masterpiece of art, craftsmanship and engineering. And no, it wasn't meant to be a convenient pocket knife (although the blade looks like it's got pretty good geometry.
I'm imagining Shad taking this utility-focused assessment to the extreme, gradually descending into insanity as he critiques more and more outlandish items solely for their practical use as a sword/knife: "That chandelier doesn't even have a handle! That washing machine is completely blunt! How are you supposed to slice your enemies in twain with that duvet cover! The continent of Africa doesn't even have a cross guard! Yellow is a much worse weapon than dark blue!!!" :)
Akkctauly if you hold Africa by the south then the north is the crossgaurd and even has a sword catch of Somalia but sadly if you look above Libya it seems the blade was removed for the safety of Italy and Greece

He does gun builds, debunking videos, and my 2 favorites, The Firearm Darwin awards, where idiots do stupid things with guns, and cursed firearm images, where kinda like this video, looks at horribly built guns, and/or firearms with crazy/weird accessories. He's awesome.
The big knife with the "strange" handle at 16:10 is actually a legit weapon. It's a Spanish Navaja, which is basically a combat folding knife used by the navy and pirates. The handle is so long and strangely shaped because it is designed to cover the blade when it is folded so it isn't a danger for the person carrying it.
A good example of how odd form can be explained by a function you didn't have awareness of.

Plus the one he was looking at is an overly sized jumbo novelty version, the larger one anyways. The more normal sized ones are actually quite handy, and the gigantic ones, historically were alot more agile, and functionally designed, whether spanish, or french ones. You can find more reasonably designed ones by searching "bandolero navaja", or simply look up historical ones...
@@triumphant39 Once-handed versions are much more common today, but there were many larger versions historically that are around the size of the one shown (often used as a replacement for a cutlass, that also doubled as a rigging knife).
@@MediumRareOpinions Yeah, there are a lot of examples of this in history. If you want to see a lot of that, check out some ancient Indian weapons--for example, look up the Vajra-mushti or the Urumi (whip sword).
I almost want to see sparring done with some of these, but the challenge is less to land strikes on your opponent and more to avoid hurting yourself lol
16:02 Those are spanish folding knives and they are historically accurate (although that one in particular is oversized, but not that much).
This design was seen also all across Latin America.
The region of Albacete was famous for making these type of knives they were very ornated and frequently used as dueling weapons but mostly they were for cutting meat and/or display in barbecues.
Good that Shad gave them a pass, otherwise, many would have called him out.

Fun fact: as a cringe mall ninja myself once, I had that sword in the third to last photo. The "katana" with the wrap continuing up the scabbard. It has a second shorter sword, with the wrapped part of the scabbard as a handle. The swo blades are off center by about 1/3d of an inch so they can both fit. It was my rediculous entry into sword ownership.

The sequel everyone wanted. I am excited to see the intricate weapons of the mall ninjas. Their skills are simply impeccable.Crawling through the vents, attacking intruders, and much more. The mall ninjas are the heros we need(?) AND deserve.
Definitely deserve with how disgusting the world has become.
A lot of these I'd totally go for in a fantasy setting where you don't have to worry about weapons breaking.

Oh, man does this take me back to the mall I frequented in junior high...to the knife shop located just outside the food court, where I would stare enviously through the show window at gazillion-pointed throwing stars covered in mysterious symbols that in all likelihood weren't even real kanji characters. "Mall ninja" is a term I've spent my whole life not realizing I needed!
When I was steaming the glass at the knife shop, we called the people who used the "nonjas", as in "Not a ninja".
The ones from 16:10 are Clasic albacete ratchet folding knives they are traditionally pocket knives, the wierd shape of the handle is so it protects the whole length of the oversized blade, and also so you can hold it by the thicker part as a cutter or the thinner part as a chopper. The bigger examples where produced to skirt arround regulations on the carring of bladed weapons. Also, fun fact, they are the inspiration for the Valyrian steel dagger from Game of Thrones.
It really shoudnt be called an albacete. Albacete isnt a type of knife, its a place much like solingen germany. Albacete was famous for the knifes it produced, thusly knives bearing "navaja de albacete" were very popular and dubbed albacetes. This has led them to be called albacete, toldeo, and Medela knifes all after manufacturers. The style of knife in question is correctly called a navaja and the navaja de muelles of the 18th century would be the one that recieved a ratchet mechanism. However many navaja are ratchetless and many other knifes feature a ratchet. So unless a knife is made in albacete it isn't a true albacete knife. The correct term for the style is navaja. And while a navaja can have a ratchet it's still a navaja. Most ratcheted navaja were called carracas for the sound they made.

@@jro2020 not really because jeans were thought to have originated in genoa atleast the fabric....whereas navaja did not originate in albacete in anyway. You're also equating jeans (the popular term) with albacete (the unpopular term). Navaja is the term used by 99% of people so it is the popular term. Albacete is simply wrong and even to this day is mainly used for knifes that actually come from albacete. It is a small fraction of people who that name for navaja. It is incredibly unusual to see it used.

That hand knife is easily the best weapon to have ever existed, if your opponent doesn't laugh themselves to death just looking at it they will be so confused by it that you can jam it into their heart before they have a chance to react. Then you can make a corny joke like "I got to *hand* it to you, that was a quick fight!"

Something that hasn't been commented on yet: the weird hand-handled sword had the same little plastic coverings on the tips of the fingers as there was on the sharp tip of the blade. So not only is there nowhere good to hold it, the bit which kinda looks like it might be supposed to be the handle ALSO HAS SHARP POINTS ON IT!

I feel like half the reason for this video was for Shad to have an excuse to pose majestically with Andúril and I’m here for it.
I myself have a mall ninja blade. I believe it's called The Dragons Tounge. A dagger with the blade separated down the center to give it extra edges. It totally compromises the structural integrity of the blade, but it looks neat. It's pretty tame for a mall ninja blade, the one you showcase are absolutely ridiculous.
I hope it actually says "Dragons Tounge", that would give it that extra little bit of mall ninja cred.
That first knife honestly ain't bad. Yeah the colouring's a bit gaudy but the blade overall's pretty good. As for the hook, see that sort of thing all the time now on emergency knives. Great for cutting seatbelts.
you can also see hunters using knives with similar hooks that are used for skinning.
exact... the base part with teeth is use to cut rope and the hook part is to cut seatbelt

@@NameNameson840 cuting seatbealt is not that hard. But not cuting thz personne wearing it is the real challenge. Especially when you are in a weird position or little time i'to do it.
@@julienmaret1877I've hever thought about it, but I suppose that if you and the other person found yourselves in a situation where you have to cut the seatbelt from weird position in order to free them, superficial cuts will not be a big problem

To be fair, that hand-knife would be pretty effective. The opponent's confusion upon seeing it would be so overwhelming that they wouldn't even realize the blade is in them until it's too late.

Possible reasons:
1) Because cool.
2) Because you can actually attempt to disarm your opponent with a trident. You can't with a spear. Gladiators would often want to incapacitate, not outright kill.

Yes. Gladiators specialised in certain weapons, which were chosen more for cool shows than combat effectiveness. The trident gladiator was the Retiarius, who fought with a trident, a net, sometimes a dagger, and a minimal armor.
Success as a gladiator depended upon making a good show of it. Gladiators were expendable to some extent, but they still cost a great deal of money to train - their owners would try not to let such a valuable asset, a real crowd-pleaser, die. So long as the crowd always cheer, a gladiator can be confident that they won't be given a fight they can't win, and if they do lose then the editor will obey the wish of the crowd and end the fight before a fatal blow. Like high-stakes professional wrestling. Except if you become unpopular then you become expendable, and get placed in increasingly dangerous situations until you have that one bad day.
Gladiator equipment did include a lot of what we would call 'mall ninja' - overly-ornate armor, impractical but cool-looking weapons like the trident. Because reputation was everything to them: They would expect to one day die in the arena, but until then, they live or die every day depending on the response of the crowd. It's not enough to fight well, you need to look awesome while doing so.
My boyfriend actually has one of these (the one at 9:17)! The thing is that he doesn't pose with it, we both just think it looks real neat as a display piece. The only way it'd be getting used in a fight would be if someone broke in and we wanted to club them to death rather than walk five foot to the kitchen where the sharp knives are.

Hello Shad, the blade around the 16:30min mark is no mall ninja blade. It is a traditional Spanish blade called the navaja.
I understand why it's traditional and not modern. There's no way that would stand the test of time
@@chrismanuel9768 thats no way to talk about it. They have been around for hundreds of years and are still made today, and were and still are well used as utility and fighting knives.
Many of the examples in that case, are of course, novelties, and are sold as such. An actual navaja wouldnt be so garishly large. The horn end cap is a common feature, and is probably for some purpose when used as a work knife.
Maybe don't just casually diss other cultures and traditions? Educate yourself on things once in a while
As a Spaniard, I can confirm that's a navaja, altho it's illigal to posses one, it's prohibited to have a blade of more than 12 cm for any reason other than exposing it

@@chrismanuel9768 Actually the bowie knife's blade was designed after the "navaja" after the heavy influence and the use of this foldable type of blade during the Spanish occupation of America. They are still in use; almost everyone has or had one in Spain. Not those big-sized ones of course.
4:00 I think that first knife is supposed to be used for skydivers or scuba divers or anyone who would need to cut ropes in an emergency. Thats what the cutout on top of the blade is for. It has that hook shape to grab and cut the rope.

15:59 that's an actual thing. What I can say for certain is that smaller versions of it are relatively common in Spain, at least until some years ago. I've even used a niddle sized one as a knife for eating. I've also seen oversized ones on old charicatures portraying even older characters, specially bandoliers, but I'm not sure if those oversized navajas were real.
Edit: this is supported by the fact that there's spanish text on the bottom right, and that the rest is just normal weapons.
I would like to see Shad take it one step further and design the ultimate Mall Ninja weapon to go with his upcoming Mall Ninja role playing game. It would be the first game in which weapon breaking mechanics would make a lot of sense. The bestiary could include that guy Steve who said my face was stupid at the mall arcade, and combat is just about looking too badass to fight by striking poses. This should exist.
I kind of want to see some kind of competition show, where Mall Ninjas bring their "best of the best" and go up against basic functionality and skill tests. And at the end of the competition if their shiny toy a) doesn't break and b) could actually deliver a lethal strike to a ballistic gel dummy (or some such), and pass whatever other tests are thrown at them, then they win a hundred bucks and get their name and face and toy on the Mall Ninja Wall of Fame. However, if they fail, then they have to do the Walk of Shame, holding their toy over their head for like a half a kilometer torch-lit winding exit around the studio audience that gets to throw lettuce leaves or banana peels or something harmless but insulting at them.
Magnificent.
Another thing about the trident is that typically, the central spike is longer. Now I know why!

Oddly enough I'd put Anduril in a bit of a borderline mall ninja category because I have a reproduction and was practicing proper-ish cuts with it (it's the only metal sword I have and I was using it for weight for fitness/exercise purpose, I did not think it a functional weapon) and it's surprisingly easy to jab yourself with the pointy bits of even that fairly reasonable looking pommel
The first one actually looks like a normal knife you'd find on a hunter or fisherman. They're very common among those groups for gutting and all of that pleasant stuff.
I think it would be hilarious to see mall ninja weapon testing.

I’ve seen them in use, and they always seemed more like a circus attraction display rather than anything that might be remotely useful in the unpredictablness of active combat.
@@kyriss12 but its strength comes from moving so fast and being able to quickly change direction, to always catch the opponent by surprise, that and looking more like a circus attraction could confuse the enemy because they didn’t expect to fight something like that, momentarily lowering their guard, and presenting an opening, also, remember how in the rope axe video, it hurt his hand when he caught it, well if he pulled it back, but instead of catching it, he grabbed the rope, to bring it back into a spin

that 1st one is a gut hook knife, the notch on the back of the blade is used for skinning animals. they're actually pretty good if you're a hunter.
