    A nine year old "second rate" Sony apsc lens.

      Don't thank Sony!!!
      Sony,for years', treated it's large apsc owner base with contempt.
      It was,initially, left to Sigma- with it's legendary "trio"- to fill the gap.
      Now, Tamron has come to the party with high quality zooms.
      Samyang has provided quality, initially manual focus, primes for some time.

      Sony is hell bent on not taking anyone's money. It's like they go out of their way to make either cheap, bad lens with a poor seleciton, or put a Zeiss name on it and make it more expensive than equally good Sigmas. And then there's the G Master series and their FF setup which yes, I definitely want to buy at 2x the price of my a6400... The entire a6x lineup is carried by 3rd party lenses it seems :D

      As a Nikon DSLR shooter who's been paying attention to Sony and Fuji APSC mirrorless over the years I admit I've been very impressed with the number of people who continue to use all of the different models. When people recommend Sony or Fuji they talk about all the models as if it's just different flavors and you can pick and choose what you like. With Nikon and Canon. It appears to me. And I may be wrong. That people always want the latest model. But people are still using and buying and recommending the a6000 and the T1 on up just based upon what they need and how much you want to spend. That's very impressive to me.

      BTW I can't wait for that probably coming telephoto lens to compelete the trio! Two current ff 70-300 and 70-180 2.8 both fit great on apsc being light and relatively small. But the problem comes with the new 150-500 which looks funny on a6xxx bodies and is a big heft to carry. A crop version of that lens is appreciated being half the weight or at least something like a 100-400

    Great video as always dear Arthur, thank you! 👍 Your clear pronounciation and emphasis makes it easy to me to follow each single word of yours. Go on with that, man! 🤗 Already owning the 17-70 f2.8, either the 11-20 f2.8 or the new Samyang 12 f2.0 would be the right lens for me to add on wide angle. (Sony 10-18 is out due to its quality dispersion.) Over here in Germany, the Samyang (400€) is less than half the price of the Tamron (900€, bah, would force me to eat old bread for 3 months or so to get the bucks in). So a detailed comparison by you of those 2 lenses on 12mm would be awesome and really help for buying decision … Your little boy gets cuter from video to video, by the way, really enjoyable to watch. Thinking about doing more landscapes, as I hike a lot and eventually hoping to shoot the Northern Lights, now I want this one as well! I'm tempted by this lens too, I actually had it in my cart and was ready to checkout, but I ended up just going for the Samyang aka Rokinon 12mm instead after watching Arthur's review. I just can't justify spending almost $1K on a lens that I'll sparingly use.

    Looks like an awesome lens, for sure, but WAY over priced, as is the Sony 10-18, in my opinion, especially at f4. This looks like a better way to go, although, I have the Samyang 12mm f2.0, and it's an incredible lens. Manual, yes, but in a wide angle, that doesn't really matter all that much. It's easy to focus, and the image quality is really great. Oh, and I got it, brand new for $145 on Ebay, so there's that, too. ;) Lenses are like smartphones, they are way overpriced, have much less expensive great options, and people will always buy all of them, from the cheap ones to the expensive ones, simply because the want them. ;) Awesome review, as always, thank you.

    Incredible looking lens. Good to see more great stuff for ASP-C camera as they are my favorite bodies to use. As for image stabilization, after shooting film cameras for 30 plus years, no stabilization what-so-ever, I see no problem with this ultrawide for taking great pictures. If one is so bad with the shakes, then take a tripod along. I've even shot with a 500mm mirror lens without tripod, got great shots. You just have to know how to shoot with fast shutter speeds or brace yourself against a non moving object, like a wall or tree.

    (4) Lenses in my bag for my a6600 now:
    - Tamron 17-70mm
    - Tamron 11-20mm
    - Sigma 16mm
    - Sigma 56mm

    • @pdub422

      You have the 4 lenses I want to end up with! I have the Sigma 56mm and Tamron 17-70mm now, just upgraded to the a6400, which lens would you buy next the Sigma 16 or the Tamron 11-20? Going on a trip to AZ and Utah soon, so will have lots of landscape photos I want to take, and hopefully a few night sky shots with whichever lens I buy next

      @@pdub422 If astro is you thing I would buy Sigma for that extra low light performance.
      And I agree, the combo seems just like a dream. If I could justify spending so much I probably would have bought almost exact set of lenses. My current combo is Tamron 17-70 and sigma 16 with a6400. If Tamron 11-20 had VC I would reconsider having sigma 16mm, as Tamron 11-20 would allow me to lower the shutter speed and compensate that few light stops resulting from aperture difference.

    I really really want a 12-24mm full-frame equivalent... as you've said, 11mm is probably not wide enough. I don't understand why they created two lenses that overlap each other (11-20, 17-70). Well, on full frame there are 16-35mm and 24-70, with the former better suited for photojournalism and street photography, but I really prefer the 12-24 + 24-70 + 70-200 trinity

  • @setaside2
    @setaside2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you ever wondered why the Sony 10-18 was so bad in the corners and why it seemed the samples were all over the place in corner quality... it's largely because of the stabilization. The losses lenses take when attempting to expand the image circle in order to allow for OSS/VC/IS/etc, especially when the lens isn't given the room it needs to correct for that movement... well, those losses are heavy. As you've seen. Hence, most likely (aside from cost and the inevitable increase in price), the reason for no VC in this lens. Fantastic overview, sir.

    I am pretty disappointed. I had this one my list. Until I saw it was an APSC lens. Sadly no use for me. Kinda explains the good price also at 1000 usd. I own the 17-28 f2.8 by Tamron for Sony FE FF. Its a great lens. I just wanted even wider than 17mm. Went with the Irix 11 f4.

    Awesome video as always Arthur! Actually I am really curious to see it go up against the sony 10-18 F4 haha, as this is the most logical competitor. The thing is, I have the Sony 10-18 and in terms of sharpness it outperforms my Rokinon 12mm f2.0. So unless I need to shoot stars, I pretty much have the 10-18 on the camera all the time for landscape and cityscape shots, plus it's a great travel lens combination with the 18-200 LE. Completely agree with you on the wide angle side too....11-20mm seems an odd choice because it isn't really wide enough for a super wide zoom, and it has too much overlap with their 17-70mm. 10-18mm would've made much more sense for this lens. Anyways, thanks for the review, looking forward to more content!

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great comment! And you got a good Sony 10-18mm. The new Rokinon 12 with autofocus is also worthy of consideration, but not quite wide enough as well.

      @@ArthurR Thank you. I guess I got lucky with my copy of the 10-18mm indeed! The Rokinon 12mm AF seems very nice indeed, but the reason I like the original 12mm F2.0 so much is because it's a breeze to use for astrophotography with the manual focus. I actually like the manual controls on this one.
