This piece.. Thank you for making this tutorial. I have been humming the melody for almost 10 years now. I am crying while writing this. I often can not put my deepest feelings into words.. It helped me thru the hardest of times. It hurts so freaking much. My kid, almost 8 now. And completely dependend. Without the ability to speak she could and can never put HER feelings and thus also her pain, into words. I have spent so many days and nights, hours and hours just carrying her around to calm her down while humming. (Epilepsy) It is hard to see your child so helpless and in so much disstress. So i always hum. This song ,.. Thank you for making this video.
The thing about 1900 (Tim Roth) is that he could simply look any situation and make music that exactly matches that situation. He proves this over and over when he is playing for the 1st class passengers on top deck; and also when he is playing for the poor folks down below. If the situation is sad, his music is sad. If the situation is exciting, his music is exciting. He sits down, reluctantly, to record some music as he was persuaded by his friend. That's what those fast rolls are in the beginning.. he's just being himself. Then, he sees the girl; AND OH MAN does the music change. Ennio, I can feel this one, deep in my heart... I often wonder who you were thinking about when you wrote this exquisite piece of music. Thank you for bringing this into the world for us to enjoy!
This piece has so much of Chopin's nocturnes and Romance Larghetto from Chopin's concerto no. 1, and also some Oscar Peterson mixed in as well. It's such a beautiful combination that brings out all of the deepest emotions of the piano. Great performance!

De Rosa: "Ennio Morricone: In His Own Words" (my translation from the Italian original): "[about the scire for The Legend of 1900] I created much, much music, of different genres, and the full orchestra score blended often with jazz sounds and jazz 'dirtying'. But perhaps, I must confess you, I prefer the main theme in that simple version for solo piano - the track called Playing Love - that accompanies the sequence in which 1900 sees the girl's face through the ship's porthole, while he is being recorded with a rudimental phonograph. [...] The biggest problem that I had from the first time I read the screenplay was to write «music never heard before». These words were used by Peppuccio [G. Tornatore, the director], but also by Alessandro Baricco, author of the novel from which the film is taken from, to describe the music played by 1900. A beautiful sentence, sure... but what if then you have to compose this music, what do you do?". In the same book Morricone also tells about the technically difficult job of extracting Jelly Roll Morton's playing from the original recordings, note by note; while the last piece played by 1900 in that confrontation with Morton was played by pianist Gilda Buttà in several takes/tracks, which were later superimposed to get the "several pianos in one" effect.

Yes, what a great scene. Not to mention your rendition of the piece. On the other hand, the audio technician made an acoustic (no electricity involved) cut of the disc on shellac. As opposed to vinyl, a format which wouldn't be developed until some decades after 1900's lifetime.
Thank you so much for introducing me to this beautiful piece of music. I've downloaded the score and learnt the song part. It will take a while to learn all the notes in the jazz runs but they set up the love song so well!

I think the regularity of the quavers (in the main body of the piece and especially in LH) detract from the quality of the performance. They're too predictable.
