I bought this projector 2 weeks ago on EBay as a refurbished item. I paid only $3,699 plus tax. I have to admit I was a little skeptical because it only had 2,600 Lumens and used the smaller .47 chip for pixel shifting to 4K. I have already watched over 20 movies on it and I have beyond impressed. The image quality contrast and sharpness are fantastic. And the 4K looks very good. I also have a JVC NX7 which is a real native 4K projector and I really can tell the difference. And the BenQ looks sharper colors more vivid and a brighter projector. This BenQ W5800 is a fantastic projector. And even though I only paid $3,699 for it which is much less that actual retail. For it still only bring $4,999 is well worth it.
Great beamer. I use the W2710 and the sharpness and contrast is great. But you mentioned true or native 4k beamer. This is not correct. It has a 1080p DLP chip with e shift to reach 4k. But not native. Those are much more expensive 🤷🏼🤜🏼❤️🤛🏼
I really miss my W2700-it was an absolute beast. However, after moving to a place with too many windows, it was practically unusable during the day. I do miss the cinematic experience. Watching Titanic on that projector was incredible. Now, I have a 77-inch Samsung, which is great, but I still long for the projector setup. The cost, though, is a significant barrier. A decent projector can run about $9k, and then you'll need a sound system, adding another $2k. It's pricey to maintain. If only I didn't have a wife! :D PS: Amazing review. One day, I'll get this... one day.
Nice review Tony, would have been good for you to test 4k 120hz and 1080p 240hz modes. So are the blacks that much better on the Epson? Guess both great at this price point. Cheers
This video may answer your questions about black levels. And no, it doesn’t do 4K/120 (I made a mistake in my video, didn’t realize that I was playing 1080/120) BenQ W5800 Laser Projector WORLD’s FIRST REVIEW AND COMPARISONS of th-cam.com/video/W_cK0K7TH0g/w-d-xo.html
I cover black levels in the video. Check chapter markers. Nothing like my JVC but it’s a dlp light engine and calibrated with 2.2 gamma which is pretty high. I’m running 2.6 in sdr on my JVC. Also the reason I didn’t test higher frame rates is because it’s a cinema projector so the angle I took was for movies more so than gaming. I recently did a review of the Benq gaming projector.
Did it look better on your non ALR screen and much gain difference on screen your main room. Think I'll have to back to back comparison in shop when ready.
Considering that the JVC NP5 is now $5,000 in the US, it sounds like it would be the easy pick over the BenQb for people in America.... The only things that I would think the BenQ has over the JVC is the lower fan noise and lack of needing to replace a lamp every 1,000 s-1500 hours.
Hey mate, if u saw I mentioned the np5 but I was trying to keep it to laser projectors. The nz7 is 17K. Np5 for me is the sweet spot but not everyone wants bulbs especially if in Europe.
On the other hand, perhaps a silver lining to the JVC is that once its lamp runs out, you can just get another lamp. While with a laser projector, once the laser reaches its end of life, I think that’s just it?
@@handcoding I didn't think anyone would use or own a projector long enough for the laser light to start to dim or"burn out", but if there was a defect and it had a short life, then yes, it would be easier to replace a lamp in the JVC.
@@TerminatorJuice You make a fair point. With a rated life of 20,000 hours, even if you were to use the projector for 3 hours a day and for 365 days a year, it should still last 18 years.
@@handcoding I feel like I've used my NP5 a ton since I got it in March 2023, yet I'm only at around 570 hours... So yeah, I wouldn't be worried about replacing a laser in a lifetime! Haha
I own a BenQ LK970 and am looking to upgrade it to something even better. I have owned it now for 4 years and have been impressed with it colors and Lumens. Would you say that the BenQ W5800 is better and a great improvement over the BenQ LK970 or do you even know?
I havent tested that older model, but this one stacks up VERY nicely. If I was in the market for a new one with that sort of budget I would definitely get it.
Sweet review, really appreciate it. I wish this was available when I bought my LS12000 in October. When I bought mine I was considering the 5000es and NP5. At that time the NP5 was $7000 and ironically back then I thought they were overpriced. Since then JVC has brought them down to $5000. The Sony was a no go because of no power lens shift and lens memory so I went with the LS12000. The W5800 looks really promising. It has a lot calibration controls, color accuracy, and sharpness with decent black levels. How is the tone mapping? Thanks again for your help.
Thanks Percy, and the LS12000b is definitely still a great projector and I'm sure you would be loving it. The NP5 was my personal choice as I wanted the inky blacks and didnt mind having a bulb. I had an Epson 6040UB for a few years and it served me well as Im sure the Epson would for you also. The tone mapping was nice on the w5800 - I find the colours on the Benq to be insanely good, very "cinematic" although I hate that word these days!
@@BuildMontage yeah the blacks on the LS12000 are good. It is a nice a projector for sure. I watched The Woman King a few days ago in the theater and the LS12000 throws a really good picture. Thanks again for everything you do.
Hi, I have a question, purely analyzing the quality of the images, contrast and details, is the W4000 superior? (detail/contrast) I'm undecided between the two despite having different prices (I'm not interested in the motorized optic) I hope for your answer. Thank you
I have to go by my memory and while I liked the w4000i, I feel that direct comparison that the w5800 is a superior projector. I know people complaining by the "specs" saying its a .47"DMD DLP, however, look at the footage I took.. it's pretty incredible image in my opinion. It is brighter than the w4000i, and I feel has better contrast - going from my memory.. It's hard to say one way or the other as you have a lot of factors to consider. But asking a direct choice - I'd pick the w5800.
Tony, a quick question mate. .. I just moved in a new house and would like to get me the best home cinema system at the cheapest available price... Never had a projector before, but I would like your advice on something affordable but solid... please advice.... Dope reviews. Thanks again.
That's a difficult one to answer because everyone has different means, budgets and what they think is budget is all different. I try to review all types of projectors. This one is an actual dedicated home theater projector so it's a pretty good contender. There are some other cheaper ones as well which could work well but won't be as good as this one - and then there are other models from JVC well into the 20K pricerange so it's a hard one to answer without knowing more. JVC, Sony, BENQ are all solid brands.
You can watch my review on the w4000i on my channel as well for a similar style review. Off hand, main differences are higher brightness on the w5800 and overall it feels very similar in colours but brightness and contrast is better on the w5800.. Plus it's a laser light vs LED.. otherwise, typical BENQ, very good colours and options to calibrate.
@@BuildMontageunderstandable. But if it's got motorized zoom and focus you would think they could at least have some save points for the different sized screens to be able to zoom in to fill your Cinema wide and zoom out and then just add a couple save points. @@BuildMontageI just mean being able to zoom in and focus to where the top and bottom letter bars are gone on a cinema wide and then zoom out when it's a 16 by 9 show. You would have let her bars on the sides but people expect that when they have a cinema wide. I plan on using smart curtains
@LFG_People u can do that but I think you mean you want to store multiple positions and zoom points. You can set masks as well. I don’t know if u can save multiple positions. I didn’t try to test that as I’m demoing on a 16:9.
To compare to W5700 ; Blacks are same as W5700. Colour ( color ) is better out of the box than my W5700 was. Brightness and HDR is leaps and bounds better than W5700 to my eyes. Also it does look sharper!!! Throw ratio smaller but a much better experience to align to screen.

Add masking panels to this for scope movies and you would think you had insane black levels. Thats the only thing that can trick the mind is the grey bars during a scope movie.
I would go the BENQ due to the electronic lens shift, zoom and multitude of calibration controls. Possibly you may say the Sony panel and native 4K is better overall but I prefer the look of the w5800 over the sony personally having viewed both.

@@BuildMontage @DavidSusiloUnscripted neither of you seem to have an issue with the incredibly low contrast ratio? Am I missing something here? I want to try one of these but with 900:1 native it seems pretty hard to believe it is as good as you guys say??
@@DLPHomeCinema @builtmontage yes the contrast ratio is not great but the native contrast ratio only tells part of the story. The other part of the story is the HDR handling done by the 1000 zones HDR dimming based on frame-by-frame analysis making it the best DLP projector on the market. Having a good contrast ratio but with poor HDR handling such as the Sony X5000 making me choose the W5800 than the Sony X5000.
Hey Tony, honestly is it that much better than the w4000i, given that it is using the .47 inch chip, instead of the .65 in the 4000i? And especially the price point difference...
I tested both. The brightness from this one definitely makes a difference and also the colours are more vivid. I’ve reviewed both. I try to be objective. Personally I’m a JVC fanatic so I have to try and forget. I do agree the .65” DMD may have been a better choice. I’ve reviewed many Benq projectors but I was seriously impressed with this one. The footage speaks for itself. I have no agenda… I just put the time in and try to give a real honest opinion based on what I experience.
I didn't test it for gaming as it's target is more aimed toward home theater - But it does have some low latency modes - I dare say judging by the other Benq models aimed at gaming it should peform pretty well.
I don't know if that screen will work 100% with that projector. I did have a ceiling mounted projector running from my AEON CLR projector screen and it actually worked! You could always test it out and then just replace the screen if it doesn't look right. I know people will say 100% you can't use it but i was shocked to see it actually looked quite good.
Yes it's a native 4K panel and yes, it's super sharp and I was able to get the focus dialled in very nicely which is why it looked so good in the recordings.
Its native resolution is UHD. You can check for yourself on the Benq website. Link in description. For comparison the Epson ls12000b is similarly priced and a pixel shifter.
Why i can't see my answer? Check out the projector central review "The W5800 is a laser projector using a 0.47-inch DLP chip that achieves 4K UHD resolution with four-phase pixel shifting to quadruple the chip's 1920x1080 native resolution."
@@iamstrong91 no I’m not blocking anything - I can see all of your answers. Benq said it’s native and I’ve seen other reviews say it’s native. I’ll reach out to them and if it is then I’ll put a comment in the description.
If you can't game on a $6k USD projector, no amount of other features matter. Input lag is horrible. Also using the cheaper .47 DLP Chip vs. the newer .65 that projectors less than half its cost are using. Jvc and Sony are better value all round even with bulb. I have always had a problem with BenQ's supposed "value"---->at what cost? And yes I have owned multiple. Thumbs up to the review though, good content. Do some side by side in a future video please.
Thanks for the feedback. Generally it’s impossible for me to do side by side as the projectors come and go quickly and at different times. Benq do have access to the .65” DMD but I don’t know why they went this way - maybe that additional cost tipped it outside of their marketing window?
I will love to see a comparation with this projector with a 110 inches 4k tv from TCL, I think in 2 more years a 110 inches tv will cost half of the cost of this projector and even so with a better picture quality .
I have to thank you for this review and the videos you took. Videos like this convinced me to give this one a shot and wow am i surprised. This projector is amazing, sure black levels arent JVC level if screen is completely dark but everything else beats JVC up to and including RS2100 IMO. Any scene with mix of black and bright and the black level is amazing. Its only the folks that drool over a black screen that will have issues with this one.
That is a huge screen and pushing the light limitations of the projector. Large screens like that need really high LUMENS output to give more than 40-50nits.
Thanks for your feedback. But this is exactly what W5800 said is capable of giving 200 inch exactly. I have already bought the 200 inch screen. Should I buy the W5800. I am willing to have magificant 4K at dark light cinematic room
Greeting All What I am trying to say. The specification mentions that 200 inch can be given within 6.7 to 10.8 mm from the lens. Now, if my room is exactly 6.8 mm from the wall, that's means I will lose some cm distance from beginning of the projector to the lens which give me about 6 meter or 6.2 distance from lens to the wall (screen). With this fact, is the projector still give the 200 inch?. Is their another recommended model that can give 100 nits or more with same room size and with same price of w5800 or less? Regards,
Hi there - I don't do comparison videos - there are far too many and the amount of work involved is not possible for me to do :) I have done a formovie review - it's on my channel - check the playlist :D
Great review. I’m happy to see that laser projectors are gaining some steam in the home theater world. I still worry that projectors will become obsolete in time due to larger and larger TVs. I think that there will also be a market, but hopefully manufacturers don’t entirely jump ship
Yep which the Epson laser does have, but is eshift. So comprises either way. But gaming and future proof at 4k 120hz is solid feature. However 1080p 240hz would be great also.
I have the XGIMI and as much as I love it, the Benq does have it beat on contrast and colours - although I feel the XGIMI is brighter and also has Dolby Vision - given the choice, I'd probably go the BENQ but it's also double the price.
I think the electronic shift/zoom does bump the price up quite a bit. Look at the Sony 5000 - all manual and costs the same however it is native - so I imagine there has to be compromises to keep it down. Also I don't believe that BENQ have developed their own 4K native chip yet. Texas Instruments is the easier path.
@@BuildMontage It is sold at the same price as the Sony 5000ES. I don't predict success for this Medel, it's simply too expensive for the 0.47DMD system.
Probably the best picture from a 0.47" DMD I've seen - tricked me into think it was native after I was told that it was from a few sources - and the Benq website states it as the resolution but doesn't say it's a 4 way shift. Great picture and tonnes of brightness.
@@Xstream718 It's been an epic amount of work I won't hide that... two projectors in, plus a screen sent to construct - it's pretty exhausting but I'd say it will be only about a week away! (Also delayed because of other videos I'm working on + my own cinema reconstruction!)
@@BuildMontage Yup. If a projector is thousands of dollars more than my price range, then there’s not much point in me watching the review (as good as the review may be).

110" is like a tablet compared to the size of my massive screen. Maybe some day TVs can get large enough to replace projectors, but we are not there yet. For TVs to reach the size I need, they would have to be some kind of foldable screen technology, because you can't carry or ship something that size. Maybe in 20 years.

Nice video, thank you. How about input lag for gaming?
I didn't test it for gaming as it's target is more aimed toward home theater - But it does have some low latency modes - I dare say judging by the other Benq models aimed at gaming it should peform pretty well.
Do you recommend use this porjector with a ALR CLR 3 projector screen? I have a Samsun lsp9t but my plan is to sell it to buy the benq w5800 instead.
Is it Native 4K? Would it really make a difference? Thanks for the wonderful review! At last, one that wins me over for getting one!
Yes it's a native 4K panel and yes, it's super sharp and I was able to get the focus dialled in very nicely which is why it looked so good in the recordings.
It’s not Native 4K
It uses the .47 DLP chip ( with a 1080p native resolution) with 4 X Pixel shifting.
From what i have read on other review this is NOT native 4k. This is just another pxiel shifting VLP. If this is the case the price it's just insane.
Are you blocking my answers?
@@iamstrong91 no I’m not blocking anything - I can see all of your answers. Benq said it’s native and I’ve seen other reviews say it’s native. I’ll reach out to them and if it is then I’ll put a comment in the description.
@@iamstrong91 oh u cannot links - TH-cam auto blocks it.
Two different use cases. Can you put speakers behind a TV in a dedicated home theater?
@@BuildMontage people always manage to acomplish that 😎
@@mauriciob8260 I wonder how… audio passing through a solid screen
@@BuildMontage I don't think he understands what you mean.
110" is a TINY screen compared to what most projector owners are using.
Well I do have a JVC but this was honestly really good
@@BuildMontage yeah DLP fans finally have a true home theater (not lifestyle) projector option in the realistic price space.
@laserdischometheater1508 it’s very sharp and bright. Single chip dlp = bright and sharp but does lack contrast. Still a beautiful image
Hi
I have 6.8 mm into 6.1 mm room. Is 6.8 mm enough to optain 200 inch 4.7 in 2.13 mm screen
Greeting All
What I am trying to say.
Regards,
Does this projector have lens memory, anyone knows ?
Plz do compare it to formovie 4k UST triple laser sir...I hv personally watched that formovie....it's just exceptional ❤❤❤❤...
Hi there - I don't do comparison videos - there are far too many and the amount of work involved is not possible for me to do :) I have done a formovie review - it's on my channel - check the playlist :D
@@BuildMontage ok shd u recommend buying this over this one ....just tell honestly sir?
Great review. I’m happy to see that laser projectors are gaining some steam in the home theater world.
I still worry that projectors will become obsolete in time due to larger and larger TVs. I think that there will also be a market, but hopefully manufacturers don’t entirely jump ship
They will never be obsolete mate.
2 videos in one week!
Yes mate… working hard!!
If you have 2 units , you can change by a small house ou AP here in Brazil. 😂😂😂😂😂
I have zero units - this one already was returned to BENQ :D
Great video
Thanks mate
Yearh Man, but the Black Level ist Grey
Great review but no HDMI 2.1 (4K @ 120) is a killer for me.... come on BenQ its 2024. What a shame.
I only watch in 24p so it’s not a big deal for me.
Yep which the Epson laser does have, but is eshift. So comprises either way. But gaming and future proof at 4k 120hz is solid feature. However 1080p 240hz would be great also.
@@JohnWickFour I love watching movies and PC gaming too. 4K @120 plz
Would this be a major upgrade over the lghu710pw?
Hmmm the xgimi 4k ultra seems a lot better
I have the XGIMI and as much as I love it, the Benq does have it beat on contrast and colours - although I feel the XGIMI is brighter and also has Dolby Vision - given the choice, I'd probably go the BENQ but it's also double the price.
Cinemascope?
No, but you can blank out if you need to top and bottom.
😂😂Epson be aware. The 3d support
I would gladly pay 2.500 euros for this. 6.000 is just laughable with a 2.000euro xgimi giving 2000:1 native contrast and a DE
@@BuildMontage the price difference is too huge when the image is not good enough. The Sony projector cost less and has better picture in every aspect
Merci..👍🇫🇷
the black level is terrible. and when you have a dedicated cinema room. it bothers me even more. At this price, Eposn TW9400 still reigns supreme
Black levels are not bad at all. Not JVC level but on par with dlp light engines
@@BuildMontage It is sold at the same price as the Sony 5000ES. I don't predict success for this Medel, it's simply too expensive for the 0.47DMD system.
0.47 DMD in this price… Why….
Probably the best picture from a 0.47" DMD I've seen - tricked me into think it was native after I was told that it was from a few sources - and the Benq website states it as the resolution but doesn't say it's a 4 way shift. Great picture and tonnes of brightness.
Dolby Viosion
No Dolby Vision with this projector.
@@BuildMontage Nice review but my question to you is, when are you going to drop your video review for the Valerion VisionMaster?
@Xstream718 I’m working on it as we speak!
@@BuildMontage I Cannot wait!!
@@Xstream718 It's been an epic amount of work I won't hide that... two projectors in, plus a screen sent to construct - it's pretty exhausting but I'd say it will be only about a week away! (Also delayed because of other videos I'm working on + my own cinema reconstruction!)
Saved you a click: This is $9,000.
So unless you’re rich, you can probably skip this video.
So the sum total of all the work I put into the review comes down to Benq's price tag?
@@BuildMontage Yup. If a projector is thousands of dollars more than my price range, then there’s not much point in me watching the review (as good as the review may be).
Wow ok 😂
@@BuildMontage I’m not sure that I understand? Are you mad that I’m not rich?
Like, I’m not saying that your reviews are bad! In fact, they’re really good.
@handcoding no no all good. I often watch car videos of cars I can’t afford but don’t tell people to save a click because I can’t personally afford it. That’s all :) no issues my end
110" tv is better.
🤌🏼
TVs have their advantages, but so do projectors. Different needs for different setups
Do you know how much a 110 inch TV is...?
How much is your 150” TV? My screen is 150”.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂3d plus 4k. Epson should learn.
