This is a true life story of my sister, she was 2 years walking and talking when she had a convulsion...rushed to OAU teaching hospital and the outcome was disability, she is now 24 years and I must it's not easy. Ma, you are a strong woman. Kudos
As a doctor myself it's sad seeing a family pass through this. There's a systemic problem in our health care in Nigeria. We have a standard way of managing seizures for children. Use of ventilators in a post seizure phase is very unusual. However it's sad that the hospital that treated your daughter refused to acknowledge their inadequacies and learn from it. The UK medical system also make mistakes but they learn from it and improve.
I just came back to practice in this country. They always look backwards. They always compare themselves with something worse. The senior doctors and nurses are wicked and toxic. It's hopeless because they will actively prevent you from fixing the systemic issues. They think they know better so someone lower down cannot advice them.
Have had my own share of this similar story but Almighty God showed up for me... My baby girl was not given vitamin K inject at birth and she started bleeding at 3 weeks and later convulsing and went to comma for 6days. She also bleeds to the subdural part of her brain. We are just lucky that its didn't get to the inner part of her brain.. we did series of CT scan and MRI till they are sure the blood has dried up... Initially we were scared she might not meet up with her milestones because of the seizure she had at 3 weeks... But All glory to Almighty God she has meet all her milestones, Sit,Crawled, walking now and speaking bit by bit at 15 months now... The experience is so pathetic , is it the financial aspects, the stress of travelling inter state for medical follow up, but in all Alhamdulillah mama escape all what we were scared off.

However, I believe many of our people need to be more emotionally intelligent. Most of us are not just there yet. I have come to understand that many insensitive comments come from a place of "concern". I only wish more emotional intelligence could be displayed, even by men of God. What I did was to work on myself, my mind. Nobody can intimidate me even in the religious circle or make me believe that I don't have faith. I'm a Christian...I love God... I'm hardworking...I do my job...and I live with disability

She was immediately intubated and the journey began.. milestones were extremely delayed. Today to God be the Glory.. except for her gait instability sometimes and tremors .. she is doing amazingly well! I totally know how this mom feels .. I am glad she found strength in all of this!

We have the same experience here in a teaching hospital but the difference is that they admitted their mistake and they paid her compensation and some money yearly for life.

I'm so sorry. This is so emotional. The Nigerian system has failed a lot of it's citizens. Many lives have been lost. Many have been given what is too much for them to chew. My family got her own share of this same issue (medical negligence) that left a permanent scar. This is really sad. My son has convulsed twice between the ages of 1 and 4. I’m forever grateful it didn’t turn out worse. I can’t imagine what this family went through. It’s a scary experience and may God keep strengthening them. The medical system in Africa as a whole is horrible for lack of a harsher term. I lost my mom last year to the poor medical system in Cameroon. I disowned that country since then and will not recognise myself ever again as a citizen of that god forsaken country. May God help us.

I could feel the pain the family has gone through same happened to my sister’s child where he was born in Lagos hospital this time is case was jaundice he is going to turn 4 by November but hasn’t been able to hold is neck or do anything as a child. There is no way a failed system anywhere in the world will do great things. It is a systemic problem. Nigerian doctors are not to blame. We need to fix Nigeria to experience excellent medical care. Take a journey to any Nigerian medical school or teaching hospital, and you will be astonished that we run a failed system. As a people, we have a lot of things to do. Our leaders are visionless. Yet, the graduates of those "failed" healthcare schools are the most sought after healthcare workers on Earth. If our system was so bad, why have the US, UK, Germany, Saudi and co refused to stop stealing our doctors and nurses?

My sister in law is also disabled due to tx received when she was born in Nigeria. She experienced jaundice that was not recognized until it affected her brain. She developed seizures and cerebral palsy. She was also born with hip dysplasia. Thankfully we have brought her to US where her hip was treated. She is wheelchair bound because of the lateness of her hip treatment. She now lives in a supportive home environment fully paid for by the government. She attends day programs and gets all the medical dental and physical care needed.
My daughter went through the same thing in Tallahassee, Florida USA. Very unfortunate! The Lord is your strength and He will see you through. I left my job to care for my daughter as well. My name is Theresa Odutola.. God loves you, and I know He will guide you.
Just remembered my sister that died, she wasn't up to a year. She was crying badly and nothing could stop her not even breast, my parents rushed her to the hospital, the doctors did not bother to check, I think he felt it was malaria and injected into her head and when there was no improvement, he discharged her to a bigger hospital. When we got there she was taken straight into coma, the doctor were angry at the injection the previous doctor gave her and from there she was bleeding and didn't even last for days. I hate that story. The fact that we didn't sue but saw it as spiritual

Thanks for sharing this touching story with us. Medical negligence is so common in Nigeria and it is sad. Nigerians can be judgemental. Even religious folks can be no different if no miracle then the person didn't have faith 😂.
When it comes to understanding people with special need and meeting their daily needs, we Africans still have a long way to go. Some people will even say unkind words or show negative behaviour towards the disable individual or their parents 😭😭 education institutions, religious and cultural gatherings should use their platforms to educate the masses about persons with special need.
I can relate to this woman, this happened to my daughter at General hospital Ikeja at the end it affected her brain luckily for me I didn't keep quiet I turned the hospital upside down.

This content should have the side of the hospital. The little delay she talked about could be early symptoms of any disease. Delay in developmental milestones is first sign to know that Sth is wrong.
Loosing a child due to carelessness is heart breaking My daughter teeth was removed in one general hospital here and a week after,her gum started growing tumor,we battle this for like 2 years,we went to India and when we couldn't keep the payment up,we came back with a tube to feed,she pass on in one of our general hospital here because there was no light to suction her during a crisis 😢 Rest on Chinenye,you fought to be alive

If these lady was born in earlier 60's she could had praised Gen Gowon for money pumped on health system, but that when no one is above law in Nigeria. Don't compare western world Britain to Nigeria. No respect to rule of law, our politicians are above laws, corruptions every where, indiscipline.no encouragement for disabled by govt, embezzlement, isolation and no encouragement of disable d by govt but in Britain govt had a special benefit to encourage and make disabled they belong and part of societies.

Hmmm.....I had to go back to the hospital at a different City to ask if there was anything that I didn't do right while I was pregnant. I had chickenpox. Thankfully I tried my best and I no longer feel any guilt. He is my first child and I remember I was extra careful, but he is diagnosed with mild Autism. Today the therapist sent me some videos from his school and yeah he is really trying but I cried in my heart.
I lost my sister January 17, she was healthy and doing ok, throughout December, she was rushed to the hospital on the 16th of January, and she died on the 17th, Nurse told us she was fighting death, crazy people , they just neglected her, instead of rushing to her bed to try help her, Dey just stand and watch her till she was lifeless, it seems to me this is normal to them, and Dey don’t care.
They gave my mom 2 same medication to use instead of one medication at one hospital in Ibadan with caused her kidney disorder, we went back to the hospital but the pharmacist denied that he didn’t gave her the second medication. She died after one year of millions of Naira for dialysis.

I'm so sorry. This is so emotional. The Nigerian system has failed a lot of it's citizens. Many lives have been lost. Many have been given what is too much for them to chew. My family got her own share of this same issue (medical negligence) that left a permanent scar.

This is really sad. My son has convulsed twice between the ages of 1 and 4. I’m forever grateful it didn’t turn out worse. I can’t imagine what this family went through. It’s a scary experience and may God keep strengthening them.
The medical system in Africa as a whole is horrible for lack of a harsher term. I lost my mom last year to the poor medical system in Cameroon. I disowned that country since then and will not recognise myself ever again as a citizen of that god forsaken country. May God help us.
Put your countries there on worst medical system some countries in the continent are better trying even though they are not hundred percent wright

I could feel the pain the family has gone through same happened to my sister’s child where he was born in Lagos hospital this time is case was jaundice he is going to turn 4 by November but hasn’t been able to hold is neck or do anything as a child. I wish they parents has the financial support to fly him abroad. God save us from this kind of life time suffering. My best wishes to your daughter she is loved🙏🙏🙏💪💪💕💕💕

@ Adeola, thank you for bringing this family experience to your audience. I am really sorry for this woman's pain. We have all failed Nigeria. There is no way a failed system anywhere in the world will do great things. It is a systemic problem. Nigerian doctors are not to blame. We need to fix Nigeria to experience excellent medical care. Take a journey to any Nigerian medical school or teaching hospital, and you will be astonished that we run a failed system. As a people, we have a lot of things to do. Our leaders are visionless. May God remain with the family.
Yet, the graduates of those "failed" healthcare schools are the most sought after healthcare workers on Earth. If our system was so bad, why have the US, UK, Germany, Saudi and co refused to stop stealing our doctors and nurses?
God bless you Ma. I pray the Lord will continue to grant you daily grace. After my dear Sister passed on last year I learnt some hard truth like telling someone going through challenges “It is well” is so insensitive and being religious.

My sister in law is also disabled due to tx received when she was born in Nigeria. She experienced jaundice that was not recognized until it affected her brain. She developed seizures and cerebral palsy. She was also born with hip dysplasia. Thankfully we have brought her to US where her hip was treated. She is wheelchair bound because of the lateness of her hip treatment. She now lives in a supportive home environment fully paid for by the government. She attends day programs and gets all the medical dental and physical care needed.

Just remembered my sister that died, she wasn't up to a year.
She was crying badly and nothing could stop her not even breast, my parents rushed her to the hospital, the doctors did not bother to check, I think he felt it was malaria and injected into her head and when there was no improvement, he discharged her to a bigger hospital.
When we got there she was taken straight into coma, the doctor were angry at the injection the previous doctor gave her and from there she was bleeding and didn't even last for days. I hate that story. The fact that we didn't sue but saw it as spiritual

Thanks for sharing this touching story with us. Medical negligence is so common in Nigeria and it is sad. Nigerians can be judgemental. Even religious folks can be no different if no miracle then the person didn't have faith 😂.
Overall, living with disability child can be draining. It's easily said than done. I pray God send help to those with the case
What concerns me is what if you don't have the funds to care for all this.. meaning your kid is gone
When it comes to understanding people with special need and meeting their daily needs, we Africans still have a long way to go. Some people will even say unkind words or show negative behaviour towards the disable individual or their parents 😭😭 education institutions, religious and cultural gatherings should use their platforms to educate the masses about persons with special need.

I can relate to this woman, this happened to my daughter at General hospital Ikeja at the end it affected her brain luckily for me I didn't keep quiet I turned the hospital upside down.

Very sad. I wish she mentioned the hospitals so pple can avoid them. How some Nigerians bring their lackadaisical attitude into other peoples lives baffles me. It breaks my heart. We need a directory of the best hospitals near us.
This content should have the side of the hospital. The little delay she talked about could be early symptoms of any disease. Delay in developmental milestones is first sign to know that Sth is wrong.
As someone who has first hand experience for autistic child. I can relate with what she is saying.

My daughter teeth was removed in one general hospital here and a week after,her gum started growing tumor,we battle this for like 2 years,we went to India and when we couldn't keep the payment up,we came back with a tube to feed,she pass on in one of our general hospital here because there was no light to suction her during a crisis

If these lady was born in earlier 60's she could had praised Gen Gowon for money pumped on health system, but that when no one is above law in Nigeria. Don't compare western world Britain to Nigeria. No respect to rule of law, our politicians are above laws, corruptions every where, indiscipline.no encouragement for disabled by govt, embezzlement, isolation and no encouragement of disable d by govt but in Britain govt had a special benefit to encourage and make disabled they belong and part of societies.

Hmmm.....I had to go back to the hospital at a different City to ask if there was anything that I didn't do right while I was pregnant. I had chickenpox. Thankfully I tried my best and I no longer feel any guilt. He is my first child and I remember I was extra careful, but he is diagnosed with mild Autism. Today the therapist sent me some videos from his school and yeah he is really trying but I cried in my heart.

I lost my sister January 17, she was healthy and doing ok, throughout December, she was rushed to the hospital on the 16th of January, and she died on the 17th, Nurse told us she was fighting death, crazy people , they just neglected her, instead of rushing to her bed to try help her, Dey just stand and watch her till she was lifeless, it seems to me this is normal to them, and Dey don’t care.
They don't care because they are overworked, and no one cares about them. It's a vicious cycle, it will never end until the cycle is broken.

They gave my mom 2 same medication to use instead of one medication at one hospital in Ibadan with caused her kidney disorder, we went back to the hospital but the pharmacist denied that he didn’t gave her the second medication. She died after one year of millions of Naira for dialysis.

Wow, I learn a lot, besides I help children with disabilities to learn how to communicate, is not easy to get some parent to accept their child, but beside are also a courageous parent like this woman, i stay at Badagry and dont mild leaning how to create awareness in my community.
