About 15 years ago Easy Jet did this to me, they told me it had to go into the hold and I would have to pay a fee. I asked for my bag back and went to the toilet and put half of my clothes on, it got weighed again by the same lady and she said that the bag is now the correct weight. I went through passport control straight to the toilet and put all of my clothes back into my bag.

I had to do this with about 7 winter jackets when I was moving from Vancouver to NZ, it was summer in NZ and my carry on changed there, I had 2 carry on and they were fine in Vancouver and Brisbane, but on my connecting flight from Auckland to Christchurch they decided it was too much, I'd have to pay $160 for that, with zero dollars it's kinda difficult so I put on all my jackets and the bag was good to go! Security promptly asked me to remove them as my name was being called (1.5hrs from landing to get onto this flight, waiting at gate and customs and Security ate up so much of that time.) It was tricky getting them off and I had a business guy sighing that "people don't know how to travel." Yeah i know i was going slow relative to normal, but those jackets were flying off, usually I pride myself at zipping through Security, I'm always the fastest and never understood people's complaints, Security also thought I had something odd in my bag and kept my a little longer, I got my jackets on and just as I was cleared to go I hear my gates closing, I rush up as they're starting to pull the door closed and they let me through, goddamn I'd never felt so puffed and embarrassed. Thankfully I had the row to myself and could pack all those jackets back in. Fuck Jetstar, they are greedy cunts, my carry on allowance shouldn't change on any flights I've booked as one whole package.
For what it's worth, it's called weight distribution. Know where an imbalanced plane ends up? In a graveyard. If they didn't make sure to evenly distribute luggage, etc, you'd be in for an interesting flight. Same with small prop cesnas.

I do it all the time to avoid charges. I can travel in 3 days worth of layers any day! It goes like this.... Leggings, shorts, jeans.... 2 tank tops, 1 top, sweater! 2 pairs of socks, panties in a pocket! Then I place that sweater in the overhead once I load the plane and my bag under my seat! I disrobe in a restroom when the plane lands. I always carry a foldable grocery sac to disrobe in. Hello low budget flights!!!! I haven't paid for a bag in over a decade.

As a ground staff I would say the officer/staff did the right thing. It is actually for a safety reason. In case there is a turbulance for example, the bag that drops will not hurt anyone if the bag is not heavy/hard.

Carry on bags are limited in weight so that the weight limits of the overhead bins aren’t exceeded creating a hazardous situation. Some people don’t want to check a bag so they bring an overweight bag as a carry on. The plane can carry the weight but the overhead bins are still limited in the weight they can hold. Too much weight can result in structural failure during turbulent weather events.

This was me coming home from London, Ryanair would allow me to go to London with a small suitcase and a backpack but going home the backpack wasn’t allowed. So I put on 15 layers of clothes to fit my backpack in te suitcase. Once I was on the plain I had to take it of Cause I would’ve had a heatstroke otherwise. Oh my, oh my. The lengths I go to save money.

I always thought it was to do with how much weight the overhead lockers could hold safely. Never had the option to pay for extra carry on weight, I've always had to check it in if it's over.
When I was returning home from America I had my suitcase which was like 30lbs heavier than the recommended and the lady at check-in had me take out 2 smaller backpacks I had bought and put some clothes in them and the bag I had originally as my carryon was now a checked bag. So I had 2 checked bags and when I was going to check 1 more bag (I had 5 bags in total) she said no because I’m wasting my money i just worked for (I was 19 and was coming from work and travel) so the woman told me to bring all 3 bags onto the plane and let me tell you I was scared until one of the attendants helped me hide the third bag under a blanket I had (she said the cameras are going to pick up I have three bags and I would have to pay for it so I have to hide and she’ll let me on the plane) anyways I ended up takin 3 planes home and all the attendants who saw me with the 3 carry on bags helped me hide the bags so I wouldn’t get charged for it.

Not very well acted or executed. If you watch it carefully more than twice, you'll find a few obvious holes in the plot and the script. All he lead man did was take half the clothes out of the bag and wear them on top of his own and his mates clothes. Those socks were deliberately ditched.

weight would be a real concern to a plane because of how much the legs and wheels of the plane can withstand. Weight causes drag and to keep moving without drag requires power to force momentum. That power is the gas needed to break tension and gravity to form lift. And if a areo company is gonna spend money on gas they're gonna charge us for spending more because the weight causes the plane to use more gas and more money has to be spent by the company. We are technically reimbursing the costs as well as the plane itself for wear and matinence and the travel location flight charting and the amenities that go with it during travel. It's unfortunate cause companies noticed this that's why plane travel got hiked up in price (barring the season rates for travel locations and it's popularity during that season). And with a bit of wordplay to not tell people outright what it is explains why there are so many random costs tact on to the bill. It's so stupid and annoying but realistic to them doing all them work. These guys idea really works to save money. Follow their idea of keeping some of your clothing and/or amenities out of carry-ons and on your person and take it off during the metal detector section along with your carryon and put it in the bins and then back into your bag or on your person once you retrieve from the metal detector. it's a often used tactic which is the main reason why so much security and screening there for that very trick and for a lesser extent, Any suspicious activity. My own advice is that if you want to drink something. You can bring a water bottle of larger size (within reason). But you must keep the bottle empty until you pass screenings for the obvious reasons of no open liquids. You can then use the water fountain or fill it with any beverage you buy after screening found throughout the airport without worry and bring it on to the plane. Make sure that the bottle itself is not metal and the plastic is translucent and to top it off; be a clear non color version to show the container is visible and its contents. If you are ever approached by security or police and questioned about the bottle thats the easiest way to resolve their questioning and concerns to prove your innocence and continue on with your day faster. Airports are just really high class versions of transferring jails with a few exceptions and multiples high-end general stores.
Until they serve you food and drink on the plane at which time the virus takes a break from infecting anyone. Works the same way at restaurants. The virus is approaching your table but then realizes you're in the middle of a meal and decides to come back later.

I'm just saying that at least in my Country we hate to tell you to pay just as much as you hate to pay because we either get into a fight with customers or we get chewed by a manager, there's no way out. To be honest we don't worry about the weight of the carry on: as long as it fits the sizer you're free to go. I've even told my passengers many times "just remove some of the stuff and put them in your checked bag, I won't care if it's 5 lbs overweight". This is how much I don't care about customers paying, because I understand it's bs and I have no intention to stress myself to enrich others.

It seems more of a money thing then an weight issue though why would they let people pay extra to still carry it on if it’s a weight problem.
@CLOUD10 the overhead bins can only hold so much weight. It’s like cabinets in your home. They are built to handle so much weight before they can become structurally weaker. Your home as a structure can handle the weight but putting that same weight in the cabinets can cause damage.

Carry on bags are limited in weight so that the weight limits of the overhead bins aren’t exceeded creating a hazardous situation. Some people don’t want to check a bag so they bring an overweight bag as a carry on. The plane can carry the weight but the overhead bins are still limited in the weight they can hold. Too much weight can result in structural failure during turbulent weather events.

This was me coming home from London, Ryanair would allow me to go to London with a small suitcase and a backpack but going home the backpack wasn’t allowed. So I put on 15 layers of clothes to fit my backpack in te suitcase. Once I was on the plain I had to take it of Cause I would’ve had a heatstroke otherwise. Oh my, oh my. The lengths I go to save money.

I always thought it was to do with how much weight the overhead lockers could hold safely.
Never had the option to pay for extra carry on weight, I've always had to check it in if it's over.
When I was returning home from America I had my suitcase which was like 30lbs heavier than the recommended and the lady at check-in had me take out 2 smaller backpacks I had bought and put some clothes in them and the bag I had originally as my carryon was now a checked bag. So I had 2 checked bags and when I was going to check 1 more bag (I had 5 bags in total) she said no because I’m wasting my money i just worked for (I was 19 and was coming from work and travel) so the woman told me to bring all 3 bags onto the plane and let me tell you I was scared until one of the attendants helped me hide the third bag under a blanket I had (she said the cameras are going to pick up I have three bags and I would have to pay for it so I have to hide and she’ll let me on the plane) anyways I ended up takin 3 planes home and all the attendants who saw me with the 3 carry on bags helped me hide the bags so I wouldn’t get charged for it.

weight would be a real concern to a plane because of how much the legs and wheels of the plane can withstand. Weight causes drag and to keep moving without drag requires power to force momentum. That power is the gas needed to break tension and gravity to form lift. And if a areo company is gonna spend money on gas they're gonna charge us for spending more because the weight causes the plane to use more gas and more money has to be spent by the company.
We are technically reimbursing the costs as well as the plane itself for wear and matinence and the travel location flight charting and the amenities that go with it during travel. It's unfortunate cause companies noticed this that's why plane travel got hiked up in price (barring the season rates for travel locations and it's popularity during that season). And with a bit of wordplay to not tell people outright what it is explains why there are so many random costs tact on to the bill. It's so stupid and annoying but realistic to them doing all them work.
These guys idea really works to save money. Follow their idea of keeping some of your clothing and/or amenities out of carry-ons and on your person and take it off during the metal detector section along with your carryon and put it in the bins and then back into your bag or on your person once you retrieve from the metal detector. it's a often used tactic which is the main reason why so much security and screening there for that very trick and for a lesser extent, Any suspicious activity. My own advice is that if you want to drink something.
You can bring a water bottle of larger size (within reason). But you must keep the bottle empty until you pass screenings for the obvious reasons of no open liquids. You can then use the water fountain or fill it with any beverage you buy after screening found throughout the airport without worry and bring it on to the plane. Make sure that the bottle itself is not metal and the plastic is translucent and to top it off; be a clear non color version to show the container is visible and its contents. If you are ever approached by security or police and questioned about the bottle thats the easiest way to resolve their questioning and concerns to prove your innocence and continue on with your day faster.
Airports are just really high class versions of transferring jails with a few exceptions and multiples high-end general stores.
