this needs to be bumped to the top of all Disc golf search results. I love my Lucid Air Evader. Paul mcbeth has even said the most overstable Destroyer he has ever thrown was a 150g.
my bag outside of putters and a handful of mid ranges is lightweight. That lightweight fuse is incredible. It kicked my regular weight out of my bag instantly. I just think we need more manufacturers doing this range more readily. I have to rely on Trilogy and MVP/axiom. And I am grateful they do produce them. Those of us who use them, love 'em.
I've found it frustrating to put together a bag for a younger disc golfer because the mold selection for lightweight discs is pretty thin. Ended up going with dino discs which was fine, but I'd rather be able to get molds I am familiar with in a weight that my toddler aged players can throw.
Great topic to highlight ! Since a rotator cuff injury several years ago I've had to go lighter. Went from 172-180 down to 150-160. They work well for me, only time I miss my max weight days is in the wind or even a stiff breeze, it's a downside. I still use over 170 for putt only discs. Innova is the clear "champion" for lighter weight selection. Trilogy has some as well (the 157 River is a boss tunnel runner). MVP and Axiom have a few. Prodigy has a few. Lone Star has some in their base plastic. Others have a very few. Most companies don't seem to offer them, or have a small selection in a mold or two. I suppose the tooling requirements get expensive ? A guess.
With a tailwind, you can bomb a lightweight driver, from my own personal experience. But if there's wind, that generally rules out my lightweight discs. Calm days and I find myself reaching for them more and more, especially as I age (53yo). Lightweight discs are definitely fun as you get up there in age, and when your arm is tired out from a long course or fatigue
I started throwing lighter weight discs lately and it has worked out MUCH better for me! Before everything I was buying 174+ but now I stick to the 160-168g range.
Great vid! I totally agree. I am going to be 50 this year and just because it is light that doesn't automatically mean understable. Keep up the good content!
150 class approach putter allows for shots that you really couldn't make otherwise. Like getting around trees on greens, you can have a disc float left or right further than it goes straight
problem is when u get used to play with lightweight discs , and most people have really often windy or more windy conditions . which will make those lightweight discs fly not predictable easily. ofc its cool to have 1 or 2 for trickshots , or play with the winds for maximum distance to left or right. i had 150g Destroyer which flew was mega understable releases but if enough air , could easily fight back !
When I was much younger I only bagged 173+. One day I absolutely BOMBED an (don't laugh) Innova Dragon. Furthest throw I'd ever had. Quickly sold me on lighter drivers. A 168 12x Star Wraith probably has the best flight of any driver I've ever thrown. A 163-165 Champ Tern is an absolute flamethrower. I suggest those two to golfers who've played for several years and struggle with distance. Lightweight is great.
So it's the higher weight that exacerbates the intended flight path. Everything understable I have in 165-175 flips way easily. My river does not fly that stable as the one here. It almost seems like at those low weights, flight paths are like 20% of what they would be if it was in the 170s area. So it just makes almost all those discs fly nearly the same with minimal variation (like the river, but yours still finished like the other light ones). Great insight
Great video! I bag several lightweight discs and hear these misconceptions all the time. The air trespass is an absolute bomber disc, so I'm sad you didn't get sent one. It's similar to a Hades for me, which also is an ideal max distance turnover disc. Lightweight discs should probably have a place in more peoples bags IMO
I completely agree. In fact, maybe light weight should be the norm and you carry a few heavy more stable discs for those headwind shots. Vs right now I have all max weight discs and 1 light weight fairway and 1 light weight driver. Flip the script completely I wonder...
My bro gave me an old 145g photon. I don't throw it that much, because it is pretty flippy, but on a wide downhill hole with no wind or a tailwind, it will fly forever.
I really like my dx aviars for short approach shots when there’s not much wind. Low effort throw and you can shape the fight. Usually prefer an envy or harp, except for that one situation.
I have a flattop 157 12x Firebird thats as beefy as they get. There is a slight timing difference When throwing something so light but the stability is definitely there.
I have a very weak throw (max 95 m, consistently around 75-80 m) 'I brought three light(155-159gr): Pure, Ballista and Bolt. The Pure is useful for scrambles putts, nothing more for me at the moment. The Ballista is the best, because it goes a little farther than every my drivers and I can be quite precise with it, the Bolt (which I use obviously as understable driver) also goes almost to the ballista distance, but for me it's a little unpredictable. But, anyway I think the lightweight discs are very useful for evolute beginners that have an accettable tecnique.
So I threw a 138g Destroyer recently and hit 444ft, which is about 24ft further than the furthest throw I have ever recorded (in a flat field) so I'm a believer and I'm glad someone's talking about them lol
I have both a 131 grams Wraith and Katana, I grip locked like crazy when I first tried them out. But after a few weeks of field work, I started getting excellent performance from both. So yeah, quite an accurate take.
This immediately reminded me of my bag in Disc Golf Valley. If you play, you should make a video related to that hahah. Along with that Innova alien review!
I generally prefer the feel of max weight for putters and mids. But I definitely drop into the 158-164 area for drivers. I do have a light weight Hex though.
You did not give the gram weight of the Air Ballista Pro, because it was probably the heaviest of your light discs. Lat-64 used to make those in the 150 to 155 gram range, but not for about 3-years now. I stopped throwing them because you cannot find a replacement when lost or damaged. Very sad.
I've been preaching this for 2 years. Especially on 4 hand really saves on the elbow. But we are in NC and it's not windy here like out west. Lightweight struggles more in the wind
Moved from NC to California, I live in the mountains among a bunch of wind farms and the wind here has made my lightweight discs almost unusable sadly. They do all kinds of unpredictable stuff in the wind.
foot fault, 166g Pro Destroyer is my go to distance driver atm. If I need to be more accurate, I can use my max weight destroyer, which actually goes farther but requires more effort.
All of the light weight discs I own are so touchy, IMHO the juice (a few extra feet of distance situationally) isn't worth the squeeze (extra necessary practice to get the right touch on the throw). Plus the lightweight discs tend to have a slightly higher price tag which is enough for me to avoid them entirely.
I don't love that you start by saying lightweight discs aren't necessarily as flippy. It might seem like a weird thing to complain about, but imo it's more accurate to say that lightweight discs are just as flippy, but it doesn't last as far into the flight, resulting in a quicker fade (meaning quicker after throwing, not fading harder). Another way to phrase it would be that lightweight are more "fade-y" but that also doesn't quite hit the mark
I love my lightweight discs. Not as much force to get a decent line out of them. Also if you dont want any of them in the future, i know a guy who loves Trilogy discs😉

I think a lot of well known brands are missing out on a lot of sales by not making light weight discs. (Discraft, Kastaplast)
I threw a 160g DD Sheriff 510ft but I'm having a harder time finding more. I also throw factory second destroyers 160-165. Cheap too
Discraft just released their Z lite for a lot of their popular discs.

How far does one need to throw to qualify
I would say the best way to review discs is to be able to throw around 425-450 constantly
@nfeil I'd argue the overwhelming majority of disc golfers don't throw 425 to 450 consistently. So reviews like this cater to 95% of disc golfers.
